SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,748, dated January 8, 1884.

Toall whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MIRoN V. Loneswonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delphos, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to improvements in neck-yoke centers or devices for attaching poles to neckyOkes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the neck-yoke, which is centrally recessed at I), to provide for the reception of a packing of leather or rubber, as indicated at c.

D represents the casting or concave plate,

. which is formed with a concave inner face, 0,

designed to fit the convex surface of the neckyoke. Near its ends the casting D is provided with perforations g, for the passage of fastening-bolts h, which are designed to extend through the neck-yoke and secure the casting D thereto. The under or inner portion of the casting is centrally recessed at it, said recess being formed with an annular shoulder, Z, around the central opening, m, which is circular. The recess is is also circular, and corresponds in position and diameter to the central recess, 1), of the neck-yoke, which, when the casting is in position, forms the complement of the interior seat, in which the stemwasher is located.

L indicates the stud or stem, the head of which is provided with a transverse perforation, a, through which the pole-ring 1? passes. The stud L is formed with a rounded neck, 12, which terminates at the shoulder s, from which extends the squared end of the stud, (indicated at t.)

B represents the round washer-plate, which is formed with a square aperture, to, in its center, designed to receive the end or bearing 15 of the stem L. The stem or stud L is passed through the opening at of the casting, so that the neck thereof engages said opening. The washer B is applied to the squared end if of the stud, and is secured thereto by heading, riveting, or by means of a nut, a small thread being cut on the extremity of the stud to receive said nut, when this mode of fastening is preferred. Before the casting is secured to the neck-yoke the round packing 0, of rubher or leather, is placed in the recess 1) of the yoke. The casting being applied and bolted in position so that its recess is over the recess b, the washer B will be in contact with the packing, which is designed to prevent rattling.

The ring I? is designed to be covered with leather pieces E, which are cut in D form. These leathers are made of stock of ordinary or inexpensive character, and an inner fillingpiece, 2, of stout leather, is applied around the ring before the pieces E are stitched together. In this manner a cheap, durable, and handsome covering is provided, which will answer all ordinary purposes in this connection.

I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to connect a pole-ring to a concave recessed plate bolted to the yoke-bar, and that leather-covcred pole-rings are old. 1

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the pole-ring, of the D-shaped leather covering-pieces E and the filling z, of stouter leather, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the centrally-recessed yoke-bar, A, having the packing c in the recess, of the circular pole-ring l, covered with leather, the threaded eyebolt L, directly engaging the pole-ring by its eye,
