Description
(NOMode1.)
F. A. CURTIS.
TRANSOM'LIPTER.
Patentd Jan. 8 .1884.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK AQCORTIS, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,695, dated January 8, 1884.
Application filed September 4, 1883. (No model.) i
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. CORTIS, of
Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Con necticu t, h aveinvented certain new and; useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the artto whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, andin which Figure 1 is aside view of my improvedtransom-lifter, showing the transom closed. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the same, showing the transom open; and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of the handle or catch.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to transom-lifters; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, ashereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a metallicrod, secured at its upper end in a socket-piece, B, fastened upon the door-frame or wall, and passing through another socket-piece, G, secureda distance below the upper socket-piece, while the lower portion of the rod, which is free, hasanumber of notches, D, upon the side facing inward. A block or casting, I, having a vertical perforation, slides upon the upper portion of the rod between the two socket-pieces, and the upper end of a rod, H, is secured to theblock, while a connecting-rod, J, hinged at its upper end to an arm, K, projecting from the tran soni, is hinged at its lower end to the outer end of the said block. The rod H slides ina vertical perforation, G,in the outer end of the lower socket piece, and is provided at its lower end with a handle, F, having 1 a vertical perforation, E, oblong in cross-section, which slides upon the lower free and notched end of nearest to the wall is provided with a projection, L, of a shape corresponding to the shape of the notches in the guide-rod, and the tension of the lower end of the sliding rod H serves to keep the projection engaging one of the notches, while by pressing the handle in toward the wall the projection may be disengaged from the notch and the sliding rod allowed to be slid up'or down until the transom is adjusted in its desired position, when the springiness of the sliding rod will force the handle outward, allowing the projection to engage a notch which will hold the handle, and through it the sliding rod'and transom in position. l
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of a guide rod having its lower free end notched, an upper bracket or socket-piece securing the upper end of the guiderod, a bracket or socket-piece having two vertical perforations securing the guiderod adistance from its upper end in the inner perforation, a sliding spring-rod having a vertically-perforated.block at its upper end sliding upon the upper end of y. the guide-rod, a transom-operating rod hinged to the sliding block, and a handle secured to the lower end of the sliding spring-rod, havingaperforation oblong in crosssection, and provided with a projection upon its inner side, and sliding upon the lower end of the guide-rod, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK A. CORTIS. Witnesses: I
. A. L. Orrs,
J AMES P. RoYn N.
