I WILL/8M I? Fnnukmgrsm/ moqej United States Patent CARTON William P. Frankenstein, Cincinnati, Ohio Application April 8, 1954, Serial No. 421,725 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-33 This invention relates to improvements in cartons or boxes such as are formed from a single blank and shipped to the user in a knocked-down condition and which, when set up or erected, are provided with an integral lid or cover.
Cartons of this general nature have in the past been produced, but have had inherent weaknesses due to their construction or were somewhat difiicult of erection and particularly automatic erection.
The principal object, therefore, of the present invention is the provision of a knocked-down carton or box formed from a single blank that can be readily set-up or erected.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a knocked-down carton or box that upon erection has its walls, which are of hollow or spaced apart wall members, suitably reinforced to withstand the unusual pressures frequently given the same.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a knocked-down carton or box that will accomplish the foregoing objects and have integral therewith a cover or lid.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a carton or box including an integral cover or lid that may be broken backwards, termed a break back lid, whereby the box may be set up for display purposes as on an inclined support.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a carton or box formed of a single blank that includes an integral cover or lid which is provided with a depending flange for enclosing the upper edge of the box.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a carton or box that accomplishes the foregoing objects and at the same time, while including a box proper and integral cover or lid with depending flanges, will have the goods therein partially enclosed by the box proper and partially enclosed by the cover or lid flanges.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

Throughout the several views of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or similar parts.
There are disclosed in the drawings various modifications of the invention and wherein various box blanks, per se, may be employed with various covers or lids, per se, each integral with the box blank, wherefore the carton and its lid or cover is formed from a single blank. The various modifications will be described in detail only in so far as they diifer from one another or differ from the carton of initial or basic blank as illustrated, for example, in Fig. 1.
Accordingly, and specifically referring to Figs. 1 through 7, the blank comprises a panel 26 constituting in the erected carton, the carton base or bottom and is bounded by score or fold lines 27, 28, 29, and 3.0. The score or fold lines 27 and. 29, for purposes of description, are designated the ends of the said panel 26 and respectively, integrally, hingedly connect with said panel 26 similar extensions 31 and 32, which, in the erected car.- ton, form end walls, as will be subsequently made clear. The score or fold line 30 designates the front side of the carton and integrally, hingedly connects to the base or bottom panel 26 an extension 33, which, in the erected carton, forms the carton front wall and the major portion of the carton rear wall. The score or fold line 28 3 defines the back side of the panel 26 and the erected carton, and integrally, hingedly connects with said base or bottom panel 26 an extension 34 which, in the erected carton, supplies a part of the rear wall and the cover or lid for the carton, all as will be subsequently made clear.
The end wall extensions 31 and 32 are substantially identical and it is deemed sufficient if but one of them be described in detail. Accordingly, end wall extension 31 outwardly of the score or fold line 27 is provided with parallel score or fold lines 35,36 and 37 thereby providing in said extension parallel panels 38, 39, 40 and 41.
In the erected carton the panel 38 constitutes the end wall outer wall member and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 42 and 43 respectively in alignment with and as continuations of the carton back and front edges defining scores or fold lines 28 and 30. The panel 39 forms the end wall top wall member and has its ends biased or contoured as at 44 and 45 for the purpose of neatness of appearance in the erected carton as well as for utility in connecting the panel 40 to the panel 38, since said panel 38 has greater length than the panel 40'. The panel 40 constitutes the end wall inner wall member and is of a length to fit between the carton front and back walls inner members which are inwardly olfset from their outer wall members, as will subsequently be made clear. The said end wall inner wall member or panel 40 is provided with outwardly projecting lugs 46 and 47 which constitute a locking means for securing the carton in its erected position. The panel 41 constitutes in the erected carton a spacer panel for spacing the lower or inner ends of the end wall inner and outer wall members from one another.
The front and rear walls extension 33 is provided transversely thereof and outwardly of its connecting score or fold line 30 with a plurality of score or fold lines 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 and 53 thereby providing in said extension 33 parallel panels 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60.
In the erected carton the panel 54 constitutes the front wall outer wall member and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 61 and 62, which are respectively in alignment with the base panel ends defining score or fold lines 61 and 62. The panel 55, in the erected carton, constitutes the front wall top wall member, which spaces the front wall inner and outer wall members from one another, and has its ends defined by cut lines respectively in alignment with the front wall outer wall member end score or fold lines 61 and 62. The panel 56 in the erected carton constitutes the front wall inner wall memher and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 63 and 64 which are respectively in alignment with the top wall member 55 end cuts. The front wall inner wall member panel 56 in addition is provided inwardly of its end score or fold lines 63 and 64 with elongated apertures 65 and 66 which cooperate with the locking lugs or projections 47 of the end walls inner wall members for securing the carton walls in erected positions as will presently be made clear. 7
The panel 57 in the erected carton constitutes a subbase or bottom panel and at the same time spaces or fixes the front wall inner wall member and the back wall inner wall member with respect to one another and the carton main panel 26. The said panel 57 is secured to the panel 26 and for which purpose the said panel 57 has applied thereto adhesive 67 for engagement with the panel 26.
The panel 58, of the extension 33, is similar to the panel 56 and in the erected carton constitutes or forms the back wall inner wall member and has its ends defined by score or fold lines 68 and 69, which similar to the score or fold lines 63 and 64 of the panel 56, are in alignment with the end score or fold lines 27 and 29 of the carton main or base panel 26. The panel 58, again, similar to the panel 56, is provided with elongated aper- 1 connecting the portion of the blank which forms the cover or lid with the portion of the blank which forms the box or carton proper.
The front wall inner wall member or panel 56 through its end scores or fold lines 63 and 64 integrally, hingedly connect therewith hinge panels 73 and 74 which have their outer edges, respectively, defined by score or fold lines '75 and 76 for, in turn, integrally, hingedly connecting therewith flaps 77 and 7 8 which in the erected carton constitute tucking flaps to extend transversely of the carton composite bottom panels 26 and 57. The said tucking flaps 77 and 78 each has its one edge in line with the score or fold line 50 and has its opposite edge respectively formed by a score or fold lines 79 and 80. The score or fold lines 79 and 80 respectively, integrally, hingedly connect with their tucking flap a top spacer flap 81 and 82 which have a width substantially equal to the width of the front wall top wall member or panel 55. Each of the top spacing flaps 81 and 82 has a portion of its edge respectively defined by a score or fold line 83 and 84 and which score or fold lines 83 and 84 are in alignment with, or extensions of, the score or fold line 48 and, respectively, in spaced relation to the end wall outer wall members end score or fold lines 43.
The score or fold lines 43, 61 and 83 at one end, the left end as seen in Fig. 1, of the carton integrally, hingedly connect with the blank a corner piece or flap 85, while the score or fold lines 43, 62 and 84 at the other end of the carton integrally, hingedly connect with the blank a similar corner piece or flap 86. The said corner pieces 85 and 86 form in the erected carton what is known as a bellows corner wherefore said flaps 85 and 86 are respectively supplied with a diagonal score or fold line 87 and 88 so that said corner pieces may be folded on themselves bellowswise.
The back wall inner wall member 58, similar to the front wall inner wall member 56, through its end score or fold lines 68 and 69 respectively, integrally, hingedly has connected therewith hinge panels 89 and 90 which have their outer edges defined, respectively, by score or fold lines 91 and 9'2. The said score or fold lines 91 and 92, respectively, hingedly connect with the panel 58, through the hinge panels 89 and 90. tucking flaps 93 and 94 which have their upper edges defined by score or fold lines 95 and 96 for respectively connecting therewith end walls spacing flaps 97 and 98. The lower edges of the spacing flaps 97 and 98 are in part defined by score or fold lines 99 and 100 which integrally, hingedly connect with said spacing flaps substantially triangularly formed corner flaps 10-1 and 102. The said triangular corner flaps 101 and 102 are in addition integrally, hingedly connected through score or fold lines 103 and 104 with the glue flap 60. The said triangular corner flaps 101 and 102 and the glue flap or panel 60 are for the purpose of adhesively connecting one edge of the back wall top wall member to the back wall outer wall member, as will presently be made clear, and for which purpose said corner flaps 101, 102 and glue flap 60 have applied to the undersurface thereof, as seen in Fig. l, adhesive 105.
The cover or lid extension 34 is provided outwardly of its connecting hinge or score line 28 with parallel score or fold lines 106, 107 and 108 thereby forming in said extension 34, between the score or fold line 28 and the end thereof, panels 109, 110, 111 and 112.
The panel 109 in the erected carton constitutes or forms the back Wall outer wall member and has its ends defined by the score or fold lines 113 and 114. The panels 110 and 111 in the erected carton, from the cover for the carton, while, as will presently be made clear, the score or fold line 107- enables a portion of the cover to be positioned beneaththe carton proper for. displaying the carton as on an inclined support or easel. The panel 111 of. the cover has its sides defined by score or fold lines 115 and 116 which are in substantial alignment with the score or fold lines 113 and 114 of the panel 109 and, therefore, the carton main or bottom panel 26 end score or fold lines '27. The said score or fold lines 115 and 116 respectively, hingedly connect with the panel 111 substantially triangular or wedge shaped panels 117 and 118 which constitute or form depending side flanges for the said cover upon erection of the blank. The outer ends of the said triangular panels 117 and 118 are, respectively, defined by a score or fold line 119 and 120, which integrally, hingedly connect with said panels 117 and 118 connecting corner flaps 121 and 122. In the erected carton the panel 112 constitutes and forms the cover dependent front flange and is provided from its lower corners, respectively, with a diagonal'or inclined score or fold line 123 and 124, which converge on one another and provide in the upper outer corners of said panel 112, triangular shaped areas respectively provided with adhesive 125 and 126.
The score or fold lines 42 and 113 at one end of the carton, the left end as seen in Fig. 1, integrally, hingedly connect with the end wall inner wall member and back wall outer wall member, a corner piece 127, while the score or fold lines 42 and 114 integrally, hingedly connect to the right-hand end of the carton, a similar corner piece 128. The said corner pieces 127 and 128 in the erected carton form bellows corners in the same manner as above noted for corner pieces 85 and 86 and wherefore said corner pieces 127 and 128 are respectively provided with a diagonal score or fold line 129 and 130.
After the blank has been cut as above set forth and illustrated in Fig. 1 and the several panels or portions thereof have had adhesive applied thereto, it is folded into its knocked-down condition. This folding consisting in bending backward, as seen in Fig. l, the corners of the cover front flange whereupon the said flange 112 and the corner pieces 121 and 122 are folded forwardly on their score or fold lines 108, 119 and 120 into the positions illustrated in Fig. 2 for these parts. The cover side flanges 117 and 118, along. with the superimposed cornerpieces 121 and 122, are then folded inwardly on the score or fold lines 115 and 116 to the positions of these parts as illustrated in Fig. 3. The glue flap 60 and the corner flanges 101 and 102 are then folded on the score or fold lines 53, 99 and 100 onto the adjacent blank panels for thereby exposing the adhesive 105 on these parts, whereupon the blank is folded on the score or fold line 48 for thereby bringing the carton inner bottom panel57 onto the carton base or outer panel 26 and effecting through the adhesive '67 an attachment of these parts. At the same time, the adhesive 105 adhesively attaches the glue flap 60 to the carton back wall outer wall member 109 and the corner flaps 101 and 102 to the bellows corners 127 and 128, all as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The carton back wall and cover are then folded on the score or fold lines 28 and 42 to place the parts in the position as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The carton is now in the condition in which it is shipped to the user for subsequent erection and filling.
The userin hand-erecting the carton reverses the folding steps above set forth in knocking down the carton, namel y, he first raises the parts constituting the back wall and'tcover to the position with the said back wall normal to the carton base or bottom panel. This operation automatically arranges the inner and outer wall members of said back wall to be parallel with one another in spaced apart relation as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6. He then raises the front wall to a position normal to the bottom or base of the carton which automatically positions the inner and outer wall members of the front wall in parallelism with one another, and spaced from one another by the top wall member or panel 55, again as illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6.
The end walls and tucking flaps are now in the posi tion illustrated for the right-hand end wall in Fig. 5 whereupon each end wall extension is separately and successively set-up in accordance with the following steps for the setting up of the extension 31, the tucking flaps 77 and 94 are actuated to be transversely of the carton and since said tucking flaps are connected with or integral with the bellows corners and 127, the said bellows corners are actuated on themselves and thereby automatically raise the end wall outer, top and inner wall members, respectively, panels 38, 39 and 40, to upstand from said carton base or bottom. The end wall top wall member, inner wall member and spacer flap are each then folded inwardly of the carton to be normal to one another and to enclose the tucking flaps and bellows corners. The folding of these parts continues until the end wall inner wall member locking lugs 46 and enter the front and back Wall inner wall members elongated apertures 71 and 66 for locking the walls in their erected positions as illustrated for the upper or left-hand wall in Fig. 5.
In the finally erected carton the end walls have their inner and outer wall members spaced from one another as clearly illustrated in Fig. 7.
Upon desiring to close the carton the cover side flanges are raised from their folded knocked-down positions of Fig. 3 to upstand as illustrated in Fig. 5 and which movement automatically correspondingly positions the cover front flange to be normal to the cover panel.
When it is desired to display the goods- Within the carton or box proper, the cover is backwardly folded on the score or fold line 106 until the cover panel 110 is in contact with the outersurface of the back wall outer wall member, whereupon the cover panel 111 is folded on the score or fold line 107 to underlie the carton with the outersurface of its panel 111 in contact with the lower surface of the carton bottom or base panel 26 and with the cover side and front flanges depending below the carton proper. The carton may now be supported or rested on the outer or free edges of the cover flanges for displaying the carton as illustrated for a modification in Fig. 18.
The modification illustrated in Fig. 8 discloses a construction wherein the glue flap corners 101 and 102 are without adhesive wherefore they are not attached to the bellows corner pieces 127 and 128 of the carton back wall. By this construction the tucking flap is given two depending vertical supports comprising, at one end, the flap 102' and 94 and at the other end the flap 101' and 93, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 11 for the corner comprising flaps 101": and 93. p
The modification in Fig. 9 is for a cover that does not have the depending front and side flanges attached adhesively to one another, but discloses a construction that is set up and locked in position from the flat blank. This modification consists in applying to the front flange panel 112 through a score or fold line 131 a locking panel 132 which has projecting from its free edge locking lugs 133, 134, 135 and 136. In this modification the side flanges projecting flaps 121' and 122' are extended for the width of both front flange panels 112' and 132. Said corner flaps 121" and 122' eachhas inwardly projecting from it, respectively, lugs 137 and 138 and 139 and 140 with said lugs 137 and 138 connected with the corner flap 121' through a score or fold line 141 and the lugs 139 and 140 similarly connected with the corner flap 122' through a score or fold line 142. Each lug 137 and 138 is provided at its base with a slit 143 while each of the lugs 139' and 140 is provided at its base with a similar slit 144. It will be noted that the 7 slits 143 and 144 are respectively in line with the cover panel side score or fold lines 115 and 116, while the score or fold lines 141and 142 are respectively outwardly of said cover panel side score or fold lines 115 and 116, and the purpose of which construction will presently be made clear.
The modification illustrated in Fig. 10 is substantially identical with that illustrated in Fig. 9, excepting that each of the corner lugs 121 and 122', instead of being provided with two inwardly projecting lugs, 137 149, are each provided only with one such lug, namely, by corner flap 121 with the lug 138 and the corner flap 122' with the lug 140. In this modification, however, the base of each of the lugs is slit, respectively, as at 143 and 144 and each lug is hingedly connected with its corner flap through, respectively, a score or fold line 141 and 142 outwardly of its slit.
In order to erect a cover from either of the modifications of Figs. 9 and 10, the corner flaps 121' and 122' are first raised from their extended positions in Figs. 9 and 10 whereupon the projecting lugs 137-140 are raised to be substantially normal to the said corner flaps 121' and 122' whereupon the cover side flanges 117 and 118 are respectively raised on their score or fold lines 115 and 116 for thereby disposing the said corner flaps 121' and 122 transversely of the cover panel 111.
Since the connecting score or fold lines 141 and 142 for the flaps 137-140 are outwardly of the score or fold lines of the cover panel, the said lugs are disposed at an upward inclined angle as illustrated in Fig. 12. At the same time, the slits 143 and 144 are opened by this positioning of the lugs to thereby provide a slot 143 at the base of each lug 137440. The cover flag locking panel 132 is now folded on the score or fold line 131 to be inwardly of the cover and at the same time dispose its locking lugs 133-136 in the slots 143' respectively at the bases of the lugs 138, 137, 139 and 140. The cover side and front flanges are now locked in the positions illustrated in Figs. 11, 12 and 13.
It should be noted that the cover modifications in Figs. 9 and 10 may be substituted for that in Fig. 1 and that the cover modification of Fig. 1 may be employed with a modified blank as illustrated in Fig. 8, even though the latter modification is illustrated in Fig. 11 with the cover modification of Fig. 9.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 14 to 18, inclusive, provides a box or carton with an integral lid and wherein the carton proper is of less depth than the height of the article to be enclosed wherefore it will project above the carton walls and be partially enclosed, as well as covered, by the lid and its depending flanges. This modification, therefore, is primarily concerned with the construction of the cover portion of the blank.
Specifically, the blank of Fig. 14 includes the back wall construction of the modification in Fig. 8 and is further modified in that the bellows corners 85 and 86 are eliminated from the front wall. This modification being effected by merely severing the flaps or corner pieces 85' and 86' from the end walls inner Wall members or panels 38 instead of effecting a connection between these parts by means of a score or fold line 43, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The cover portion of the blank of Fig. 14 has its main panel 111 of a length to fully span the setup box portion, per se, instead of merely partially covering the same and depending upon the panel 110 to complete the cover. In the modification of Fig. 14 the panel 110 is primarily for the purpose of spacing the cover panel 111' upwardly of the box or carton, the necessary distance that the article extends above the box wall or the necessary distance that it is desired the said cover panel be above said box walls. In the particular example illustrated in Figs. 14 through 18 the said panel 110 serves the additional function of enabling the cover panel 111' to be bined cover front flange and spacer panel 150.
8 disposed beneath the carton base or bottom panel as illustrated in Fig. 18.
The cover portion of the modification in Fig. 14 includes a pair of panels 144 and 145 integrally connected to one another by a score or fold line 146 for forming one side flange of the cover and a second pair of panels 147 and 148 connected to one another through a score or fold line 149 for the other cover side flange. The panels 144 and 145 being integrally, hingedly connected with the cover panel 111 through the score or fold line 115 while the panels 147 and 148 are integrally, hingedly connected with the cover panel 111' through the score or fold line 160. Connected with the outer end of the panel 111' through the score or fold line 108 is a com- The said spacer-flange panel 150 has integrally, hingedly connected therewith through the score or fold line 151 a panel 152, in turn having connected therewith through a score or fold line 1153, a shoulder panel 154. The shoulder panel 154 through a score or fold line 155 carries an inner spacer panel 156 having at its outer end a panel or glue flap 157 connected therewith through the score or fold line 158. The shoulder panel 154 intermediate its ends has a U cut therein including vertical cuts 159' and a cut 153', conveniently formed in the score or fold line 153, to provide a tongue 159 that is integral with the inner spacer panel 156 and in the erected canton embraces the front wall thereof, in looking and positioning the cover on the box, as will presently be made clear.
The upper end of the cover side flange panel 144 is defined by a score or fold line 160 While the adjacent end of the cover front flange and spacer panel 150 is likewise defined by a score or fold line 161. Integrally, hingedly connected with the panels 144 and 150 through said score or fold lines 160 and 161 is a bellows corner member 162 provided with a diagonal score or fold line 163. The opposite cover side flange panel 147 is likewise defined at its upper end by a score or fold line 164 as is the adjacent end of the panel 150 defined by a score or fold line 165 with said score or fold lines 164 and 165 connecting with the panels 147 and 150 a bellows corner piece 166 diagonally scored by a fold line 167. The outer ends of each of the cover side flanges inner panels 145 and 148 are reduced in length to thereby provide a locking lug 168 and 169, respectively, at the upper ends of said panels 145 and 148 for locking the parts in their olperative or setup positions as will presently be made c ear.
The panels 152 and 157 are respectively provided with adhesive 170 and 171 for securing the parts in their knocked-down positions.
In folding the blank of Fig. 14 into its knocked-down position the same steps as above set forth are followed, except that only one fold is made with respect to the cover parts and that consisting merely in folding over portions of the blank upwardly of the score or fold line 151 so as to bring the panel 152 onto and, through its adhesive 170, securing same to the panel 150 and securing the glue flap or panel 157 through the adhesive 171 to the cover panel 111'.
Upon erection of the knocked-down carton of Fig. 14, the same steps as above are followed in so far as the carton proper is concerned. While to erect the lid or cover, the cover front flange and spacing panel 150 is raised to be normal to the cover panel 111 which automatically raises and spaces the inner spacing panel 156 from the panel 150, as defined by the width of the shoulder panel 154. It should be noted that the parts are so proportioned with respect to one another that the said inner spacing panel 156 has its score or fold line 158 spaced from the cover panel score or fold line 108, a distance equal to the width of the shoulder panel 154. It should be noted that the raising of the cover front flange panel 150 to its operative position and the positioning of the spacer pane1a156 separated the tongue 159 from the shoulder panel 154 so that it now extends in the plane of extent of the cover inner spacer flange.
Continuing the erection of the cover, the bellows corners 162 and 166 are folded on themselves which raises or causes a simultaneous folding of the cover side flanges panels 144 and 147 to be normal to the cover panel 111' and at the same time disposes said folded bellows corner pieces, respectively, against the said side flanges panels 144 and 147 to extend downwardly of their upper ends. The cover side flanges inner panels 145 and 148 are now respectively folded on their score or fold lines 146 and 149 to be interiorly of the cover and to embrace, through their upper ends, the folded bellows corners 162 and 166. The locking lugs 168 and 169, upon the final folding of the cover flanges panels 145 and 148, are forced behind the adjacent ends of the shoulder panel 154, which is at this time extending transversely of the cover panel 111'. The insertion of the said locking lugs 168 and 169 behind the ends of the shoulder panel 154 locks the parts in their erected positions as clearly illustrated in Fig. 15.
After the carton or box proper has had placed therein the desired article or articles, the cover is folded or actuated about the score or fold line 107 with the. panel 10 upstanding from the carton back wall. The said cover of the modification in Fig. 14 is disposed in its final closing position by engaging or embracing the upper end of the carton front wall between the portion of the cover front flange and spacing panel 150 that depends below the shoulder 154 and the depending -tongue 159 with the shoulder panel 154 in face contact with the front wall top wall member or panel 55, as illustrated in section in Fig. 17 and in perspective elevation in Fig. 16. With the cover in its final position the upper ends of the carton side walls are embraced by the cover side flanges as. illustrated in the perspective elevation of Fig. 16.
If it is desired to display the contents of the carton the said cover is folded backwardly until the panel 110 is in face contact with the carton back wall outer wall member and the cover itself beneath the carton proper as clearly illustrated in Fig. 18. By forming the cover side flanges panels of a somewhat triangular formation, as illustrated in Fig. 14, the carton proper is supported in an inclined position as clearly illustrated in Fig. 18. It should here be noted that the similar formation of the cover side flanges panels of each of the other modifications causes a similar display result.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 19, 20 and 21 is primarily concerned with shifting the end wall extension 31' and 32 from the ends of the carton main bottom panel 26 to the inner bottom panel 57'. The elements of the said end wall extensions 31' and 32' are substantially identical with those illustrated in Fig. 1 and specifically those illustrated in Fig. 14 and are connected with the said inner bottom panel 57' through score or fold lines 172 and 173.
Fig. 19 further illustrates a modification in the cover construction and particularly the construction of the flanges for the cover, and as there shown comprises the cover front flange panel 112' having connected therewith through the score or fold line 131 a panel 174 which in the erected carton is interiorly of the cover. The panel 174 has integrally, hingedly connected therewith through the score or fold line 175 a locking panel 176. The panel 174 at its upper outer ends is provided with locking lugs 177 and 178 which carry onto the ends of the locking panel 176 for securing the parts in their erected positions. The panel forming the cover front flange 112 has integrally, hingedly conected therewith bellows corner pieces 162 and 166, above described in detail, and which are in turn integrally, hingedly connected with the cover side flange panels 117' and 118' through score or fold lines 119 and 120. Downwardly of their outer ends, the cover side flange panels 117' and 118' have integrally, hingedly connected therewith panels 179 and 180, each in turn having integrally, hingedly connected therewith a locking tab 181 and 182.
To erect the modification in Fig. 19 to the positions illustrated in Figs. 20 and 21 the inner side flanges panels 179 and are first folded onto the said flanges outer panels or members 117 and 118. The said flanges outer panels 117' and 118 are then raised to be normal to the cover panel 111 whereupon the bellows corners are folded on themselves and the cover front flange outer member raised to be normal to the cover panel 111 which automatically disposes the folded bellows corners 162 and 166 against the innersurface of the said front flange outer member 112 and automatically disposes the locking lugs 181 and 182 against the folded belows corners. The locking flap 176 is now arranged to be normal to the front flange inner member 174 whereupon the said front flange inner member or panel 174 is folded inwardly of the cover until the locking lugs thereof snap behind the ends of the side flanges inner members and the ends of the locking panel 176 snaps beneath the lower ends of said inner members, all clearly illustrated in Figs. 20 and 21.
The modification of the cover construction illustrated in Figs. 22, 23 and 24 is somewhat. along the lines of that in Fig. 19, except that the locking lugs of the side flanges inner members snap into a locking pocket provided by the front flange inner member.
Specifically, the modification in Figs. 22, 23 and 24 comprises providing the side flanges inner members or panels 179' and 180' with substantially triangularly shaped locking lugs 183 and 184 located at their outer upper corners instead of at their inner corners as were the flaps 181' and 182. The front flange inner member or panel 174' is devoid of a locking panel and has its upper outer corners removed so as to provide angular faces 185 and Y186. In addition, the panel 174' has integrally, hingedly connected with its ends, downwardly of its biased corners, locking flaps 187 and 188 and the said panel 174' is provided with adhesive 189 whereby it is permanently secured to the inner surface of the front flange outer member.
In operation the blank including the modification of Fig. 22 is shipped to the user with its front flange inner member 174' in its superimposed position on the panel or front flange outer member 112', "as illustrated in phantom lines in Fig. 22 and indicated by the reference numeral 190. This results in a pocket at each of the lower inner corners of the cover front flange which has the inclined face provided by the cut lines 185 and 186 of the biased corners of the panel 174.
In order to erect the cover of Fig. 22 the front flange is raised to be normal to the cover panel 111 whereupon the bellows corners 1-62 and 166 are folded on themselves and the cover side flanges panels 117 and 118' raised to be normal to the said cover panel 111. By this construction, the folded bellows corners are adjacent the inner surface of the side flanges inner member with the locking tabs 187 and 188 in turn adjacent the inner faces of the bellows corners. The side flanges outer members or panels 179 are now folded inwardly onto the side flanges outer members which fold continues until the locking lugs 183 and 184 snap into the pockets provided at the lower end of the front flap assembly, all as clearly illustrated in Figs. 23 and 24.
As was noted above, the carton or box proper portions of the several modifications may be employed with any one of the lid or cover modifications, whether those modifications are specifically illustrated in combination or not.
From the foregoing, it will now be noted that there has been provided a carton or box with an integral lid formed from a single blank and which has its walls adequately reinforced to withstand the unusual uses of boxes '11 or cartons of the kind'herein disclosed and it will further be noted that the objects initially set forth are attained.
