Description

STATES ATENT FHCEG JOHN M, F'LTON, OF ROANOKE, INDIANA, nss1esen en TWO-THIRDS T JAMES H. MCAHON ANDERVIN RICHARDS, OF SAME PLAOE.
THiLL-COUPLING.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,588, dated January 8, 185 4. AIJp1icill filed May 24, 1853. \0 model.)
T0 aall whm z' muy OIJ'L.
Be it knewn that I, JOHN M. FULTON, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Reaneke, in the county of Huntingtenand State of Indiana, hzwe invented 211 new and useful Thil1- Ceupling, of which the following is a specificatien, referenee being had te the aeeernpanying drawings.
This invention re1ates te shaftcouplings f01 vehieles; and it has f0i its object te previde for the adjustment of the eoupling-bex latera1ly in relatien te the shaekle, whereby thills may be substituted fel & single pole, zu1d vice versa, without meving the shackies upen the front ax1e, s lies heretofere usuaily been neeessary, owing te the differenee in width usuaily existing between these parts.
My invention eensists in the IDPIOVGC eenstructien and arrangement of part-s whieh will behereinafter fui1y deseribed, zmd partienlarly peinted out in the claims.
In the drawings herete annexed, Figure 1 is a perspeetive view. Fig. 2 is a longitudi- 11a1 vertieai seetienal view. Fig. 3 is L verticai transverse sectiena1 view; and Fig. 4 is 2b detailed view, showing in perspeetve the severai parts fenning n1y invention detaehed fren1 eaeh ether, se as te illustrate more elearly the eonstruction of eeeh.
The same letters refer te the same parts in 2111 the figures.
A in the drawings designates a clip er shaekle, upon the front side of whieh is formed a prejeetien er beX, B, h:wing 2\1 recess, 0, and previded atits rear 01 inner end with a transverse groeve, D, whieh may be of any snitable shape. It is a1s0 previded in front of the groeve D with ZL t1ansverse slot, B, te reeeive 21, sliding bolt, as wi1i De present-y described.
F is the ceupiingbex, whieh consists of 2 bedy, G, having ferwardly-prejecting ears 01. 1ugs H H, between which the eye of the thill iren is pivoted epen u, belt, I. The body G is provided with a rearwardly prej eeting shmk, J, extending into the reeess C, in whieh it is eapabie of adj ustment lateraliy. The shank J is provided at its rear end er edge with a flenge, K, fitting in the groeve D in box B. 50 Shank J is also prevded with & vertieal peroratien, L, -fox the eeupling-belt M. 'Ihe is also previded wit'hen opening r the insertien of the said feather, whieh when the belt is inserted te its proper pesitien and the thilliren lewered, prevents the withdrawai of the belt, and thus leeks thethill er Shibf in position.- The reeess 0 of thebex B is fitted with a cap, IE. having at its front edge Z11 flange, Q, whieh rest-s ageinst the eeupling-bex F end serves te brace the letter against the strain te whieh it will be expesed. The eap P has a recess, R, and a transverse slet, S. In the said recess is fitted 21 nut, T, which may have E1 transversely-sliding mevement. A piste, U, seeured te the under side of cap P, serves te held the nut T in its plaee.
'lhe eeuplingbeit M, te whieh referenee has been made abeve, is passed frem the top of the bOX B threugh the slot E. threugh the perforatien L in the shank J of the eenpling-bex, and through the siet S in the cap P, where it engages the nut T. The letter, it will be seen, is prevented frem turning by the reeess in whieh it is seated, thus enabling the bolt te be tightened inte place. When the belt is slightly leosened, the shank J of the ceupling-bex may be adj usted laterally in the recess 0, the s1ets E and S permtting lateral adjstment of the eeuplng-eoit, ind the reeess R being of suflieient dimensiens te admit of the adjustment of the nut T, as stated. In this manner the ceupiingbex nmy be meved latem1ly te the desired extent witheut changing the pesitien of the shuck1e upen the ax1e. The flenge K upen the shenk J, whi 011 is fitted, as set ferth, in the groeve D of box B, takes 111) the strain te whieh the eenplingbelt M weu1d etherwise be subj eeted, t-11 us preventing the said belt from bending er giving way when draftis appiied te the thi11s er sheft.
Upen the belt M, direetiy under its head, is fitted a small platte er washer, W, whieh serves te prevent dust end dirt frem entering thre.ugh the slot E.
Frem the feregeing deseription, taken in eonneetion With the drawings herete annexed, the eperation ai:nd advant-ages 0' n1y inventien 2 29:.ass
forth.
Having thus described n1y nvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the Unted States J1avng a forwardly-projeeting recessed box, of a ooupling-box havng arearwardly-extending shank, secured laterally adjustably in the said recessed box, substantially as set forth.
2. The combnaton of the clip or shackle havng & forwa-rdly-extending box hzwng a transverse groove in its nner rem end, wth the coupling-box hzwng a rearwardly-extendng shamk seoured laterally adj ustably in the said box,anc1 having at ts rem end 2m upwardly-extendng flange fitting in the growe in the fecessed. box of the clip, substantially as s et 'orth.
3. The eombuaton of a clip 01 shack1e hav- 1'ng 2m forwardlyextendng reoessed box wth H transversely-slotted bottom a transversely slottedoap for thesad box, 21, eoupling-box haVing 2t rearwardly extending vertoally perforated shank capab1e of beng adj usted tr2iijsversely in the said recessed box, and a (zoupling-bolt zmd nut, substantally as set 'o1th.
4. Tim combnation of a clip 01 shacklehaving a forwardly-extending reoessed box with a transversely-slotted bottom, a transverselyslotted. cap for the sad box, providedwith a reoess in its under side, a nut seated in the Std recess, a covering-plate, a coupling-box having a rear-wardly-extendng vertically-per forated shank eapable of beng aldjusted transversely in the said reoessed box, and a coup ling-bolt, 2L112L112L11g6d and operatng substan tially as set forth.
5. The oombnaton of the transversely-slotted box extending forward from the clip or shaokle, the transversely-slotted cap fox the sadbox, the eouplingbox hzwng a rearward lyextendng verteally-perforated shank, the eouplng-bolt and nut, the 1atter seated in a transverse recess in the cap-p1ate, and a proteoting p1ate or washer arranged upon the 11-pper end of the bolt, adjoining the head of the same, 2ps and for the purpose set forth.
In testmony that I claim the 'oregong as my own I have hereto affixed my sgnature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FULTON. YVtnesses:
W BAGGER, EDW ARD G. SIGGERS.
