JAMES H.` REED, OF BROOKLYN, NEWv YORK.
GRlNDlNG-NIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of` Letters Patent `No. 291,537, dated January 8, 1884.`
I Application filed May 10. 1883. (Xo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I,` JAMES H. REED, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of y Glass or other Materials, of which the following is a specication. Y
`This invention relates to that class of machines called grinding machines;V and it has for its object improvements in the construction of same, whereby the edges of the material to be ground can be adjusted more readily and with greater precision to the stone or mill than by any other device.
To describe myinvention more fully, so that those skilled in the art can understand the same, I will now refer to the accompanying drawings, of which-. j
Figure lv` is a sideelevation of grindinginachine, showing my improvements. Fig. 2is a plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line r fr, showing tablein another position.
c represents the horizontal stone or metal-` lic mill, supported in frame c', driven by pul y ley c2, by which the edge or beveled edge of the glass or other material is ground. In the use of the metallic mills sand or other abradin g substances are used.
b b' are the rails or ways fastened to the frames ccci, on which the carriage d, supported by the grooved wheels d d2 cl3 d", move backward and forward freely the length of the ways b b.
Pivoted to the carriage d by means of the adjustable centers e e is the table f, controlled and kept in position by the levers g g, `fasti ened to the carriage d at the points h h and to i brackets it.
the under side of the table' f by means of the The table fis raised or lowered by means of the curved racks j j', pivoted to the under side of the table f at the points k It, and the pinions ZZ', fastened to the shaft mi, working in the bearings an on the carriage d. The racks j j' are held ingear to the pinions ZZ by means of guides or braces cned to the carriage d.
to the angle desired. The hand-wheel is firmly clamped by means of the clamp q, which is held rigidly to the carriage d by the hand` screw r, by which means the table f is firmly held and easily adjusted at any desired angle.
tries s s', which work in straps t t', the eccen-V trics s s being fastened firmly to shaft u, which works in bearings fu e', fastened to the carriage d. The shaft a is worked by means of the hand wheel w, which is secured to same. When the table f is adjusted to the required position, by turning the shaft a by means of 65 the hand-wheel w, it is firmly held in place by the clamp y, which is rigidly held to the carriage d by means of the hand-screw z. The carriage d and the frame of the table f are formed by T or angle iron, either wrought or cast, and firmly bolted or riveted together for the purpose of constructing sameas lightly as possible. The table f is formed by securely fastening to the frame wood, which is covered with felt, so that' the glass plates or other materials may not be broken or scratched by clamping same to the table. Then the glass or other material is clamped to the table f by means of screw-clamps or other devices for firmly holding the same, the table then is raised by turning the shaft m, upon which are the pinions Z Z, engaging into the racks j j', as
nearly as possible to the required height, to
glass coming in contact with the revolving stone or mill. The edge is ground away until the desired bevel is obtained, the table f being lowered by means of the racks j j and the eccentrics s s as the glass is cut or ground away.
The construction of the adjustable table with the racks an d eccentrics also enables the height of the table to belowered as the stone or mill wears away. Y i
Having now described my invention, what i Upon the shaft m is ahand-wheel, p, for the 5o purpose of working shaft m in direction as may 4 be required when table f is raised or lowered I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Ioo isy 1 1 ln combination, the table f, the eccentries 8.8', straps t t, hand-Wheel 'w and clamp racks j j', with pinions Z Z, hand-wheel p, and y, the raeksjj, p'inions Z Z, hand-Wheel p, and clamp q, substantially as and for the purpose clamp q, and levers g g', and brackets fi i', snbset forth. stantiztlly as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 2. In combina-tion, the table f, the eceenmy hand at New York, 4county and Stat-e of 15 tries s s, stra-ps t t', the racks j y, and pinions New York. v Z Z, and levers g g', and brackets 13 vl, substan- JAMES H. REED. tially as and for the purpose herein set forth. Witnesses:
3. In combination, table j, the eecentrcs s II. D. WILLIAMS, 1o s', straps 't 1f', hand-wheel fw, and clamp y, and VILLIAM SHEDLOCK.
