To all whom it Hwy concern;

Be it known that I, Josnrn E. PHILLIPS, of WestAshford, county of Windham, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window hades, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in window-shades of the class known as Venetian blinds, and to the means for effecting the adjustment of the same; and it consists in providing the upper slat of the shade with jourrials removed from its ends, said slat being journaled in and lipheld by means of eyebolts secured to and pendent from the upper horizontal beam of the window or shade-frame, leaving said upper slat free to be revolved for bringing it and the other slats which compose the blind to the desired inclination; in the combination, with the said upper slat. of the pulley and endless cord for adjusting the slats, also, in providing the upper slat with a swiveling pulley or pulleys secured to journals on said slat, one of said journals being formed upon or secured to one end of the slat, whereby said pulleys are adapted to remain always in working position, no matter what may be the inclination or position of the slats which compose the blind or shade.

made detachable from the window, the frame A. above described, may be dispensed with, and the shade attached directly to the upper horizontal frame of the window frame or casing. The upperslat, B, of the shade O is provided with journals B B", removed from the ends,as shown, and adapted to receive and be upheld and suspended from the horizontal timber of the frame A by means of eyebolts or screws 0 a, secured to said horizontal timber, the eyes or hooks of which form bearings for the journals B B whereby the slat B is adapted to be rocked on its journals in said bearings, for a purpose hereinafter set forth; and as a means for rocking slat B, a pulley, D, is securely attached to one end thereof, a cord, D, passing around it, and also around an adjustable pulley, of any preferred form, secured to one of the vertical timbers of the window to which my improved shade is to be applied. The opposite end of slat B to that upon which pulley D is located has a journal formed upon it, (shown at B,) provided with a swiveling-loop, e, in the pendent arm of which a pulley, E, is journaled, adapting the slat B to be rocked without disturbing said pulley, which it is desirable to have remain pendent, as shown in the drawings. Other pulleys, E and E similar to that E, are employed, also swiveling upon journals B B, formed upon slat B, over which and the pulley E pass the cords F and F, for elevating and lowering the shade. The slats which compose the shade or blind are suspended and held in place by means of two or more tapes or bands, G, passing entirely around them, as shown, and provided at regular intervals with cords, which pass under each slat, for the purpose of holding all the slats at a uniform distance apart, and at an inclination corresponding with the inclination of the upper and controlling slat, B, which latter, when rocked in its hearings in the eyebolts c c, by means of the cord D and pulley D, above described, will adjust and regulate the angle of inclination of all the slats which contribute to make up the shade or blind. The slats are each and all, except the upper one, B, slotted at H H, as shown, to permit the passage through them of the cords F F, hereinabove referred to, which It will be apparent, however, that I where the user does not desire the shade to -be pass around the pulleys E, E, and E", and being fastened at their lower extremities to the lower slat of the blind, when they are drawn over said pulleys, the lower slat is elevated, and in its ascent earries withit the slats above it, until the blind is raised as high as desired, when the elevatingcords may be wound upon a hook, I, secured to the frame A, and the blind be held in its elevated position.
