COVER FOR PANTS HANGER Reuben Shapiro, Flint, Mich.
Application July 26, 1957, Serial No. 674,458
4 Claims. (21. 223-98) 'j This invention relates to pants hangers and particularly to covers for pants hangers which are used for the display of pants in a clothing store or the like.
In clothing stores and the like it is customary to display pants on horizontal rods by folding the pants over the rods. A customer, in selecting a pair of pants, usually handles the pants as they are hanging on the rods in the area of the fold so that pants often become soiled due to handling, particularly if they are light in color. In addition, dirt and dust settle on the pants in the area of the fold on the horizontal rod, further soiling the pants.
It is an object of this invention to provide a removable cover for pants hanging on a horizontal rod.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a cover which does not become displaced during the normal handling of the pants in the selection by a customer.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a cover which does not interfere with the selection and provides a clear and unobstructed view of the pants.
It is a further object of this invention to provide such a cover which is inexpensive.
Basically, the cover comprises a piece of transparent flexible material which is folded to provide a closed horizontal top edge and open bottom edges. One vertical side edge of the cover is permanently closed by a fastener such as a snap type fastener so that it may be opened or closed. The cover is slipped over a horizontal rod supporting a pair of pants and the fastener is closed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a pants hanger supporting a pair of pants and showing the cover in position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cover removed from the pants hanger.
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the cover on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the end of the cover shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 55 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the blank used to make the cover.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the hanger shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, tube 10 provides a support for horizontal hangers 11 and includes a plurality of spaced vertical holes 12. Each hanger 11 includes a vertical leg 13 at one end thereof which may be selectively positioned in one of the holes 12 in tube 10. The other end of each hanger 11 is bent upwardly and outwardly as at 14. A pair of pants 15 is folded over the horizontal hanger 11. The hanger 11 may be formed with a wire clip 16 which holds the pants on the hanger and prevents the pants from slipping off the hanger. Clip 16 is made of wire and includes a first loop 17, the closed end of which extends inwardly, connected to a second loop .18, the closed end of which extends outwardly to provide adjacent bars 19,. 20 between which one of the legs of thev 26, 27 are folded inwardly and permanently. joined to,
each other as by'sewing or, in the case of plastic mate. rial, by sealing with heat. The provisionfof, the notch 25 forms an opening 28 in the area of junctureof fold line 22 and the side edges 26, 27 through which the end 14 of hanger 11 is inserted. The other side edges 29, 30 of the cover are unconnected and the lower ends thereof are releasably secured to each other by a snap fastener 31.
The cover 21 is inserted over the hanger 11 with the end 14 of the hanger projecting through the opening 28 1 and the snap fastener 31 is then closed. In this position the cover effectively protects the pants from becoming soiled in the area of the fold over the pants hanger 11. The cover is prevented from being removed from the hanger during normal handling in the selection of a pair of pants.
It is preferred that the cover be made of a transparent colorless material in order to provide an unobstructed view of the pants and thereby not interfere with the selection by a customer. Flexible plastic material has been found to produce satisfactory results.
It can thus be seen that I have provided a removable cover for pants hangers which effectively protects the pants from becoming soiled because of handling or extended display on horizontal rods. The cover does not interfere with the selection by a customer. The cover is not displaced by the normal handling incident to selection. Moreover, it may be made inexpensively from low-cost materials.
I claim:
1. A removable protective cover which may be readily applied to and removed from a pants hanger having a substantially straight horizontal bar over which a pair of pants is folded comprising a piece of flexible transparent material folded along a substantially straight line to form a pair of spaced walls having substantially vertical side edges, said spaced walls being unattached to each other along their entire lower edges to facilitate.
placement of said cover on a pants hanger, the length of said cover being slightly greater than the width of a pair of pants which is to be protected, means for fastening together the side edges of the spaced walls at one end of said cover, and means for detachably fastening the side edges of the spaced walls at the other end of the cover, said cover being adapted to be positioned in such a manner that said latter means prevents removal of the cover by movement thereof axially of the pants hanger.
2. The combination comprising a substantially horizontal bar over which a pair of pants may be folded, a removableprotective cover for said horizontal bar comprising a piece of flexible transparent material folded along a substantially straight line to form a pair of spaced walls having generally vertical side edges, said spaced walls being unattached to each other along their entire lower edges, said cover being draped over the horizontal bar on which a pair of pants are folded, the length of said cover being slightly greater than the width of a pair of pants on said bar, means for securing together the side edges of said spaced walls at one end of said bar, and means for releasably securing together the lower portions of the side edges of said spaced walls at the other end of said horizontal bar to prevent the cover from beingremoved by movement axially of said horizontal-bar.
3. The combination comprising a substantially horizontal bar over which a pair of pants may be folded, a removable protective cover for said horizontal ban corm- 5 prising a piece: of flexible transparent material folded along a substantiallystraight lineto form a pair of spaced walls havinggenerally; vertical side edges; said spaced walls being" unattached to 1 each other: along their entire lower edges, said coverbeing draped over the 10 horizontal bar on which a pain of pants are foldedthelength of said zcover being'slightly greater than the widthofa pair of pants on said bar, meansfor permanentlyclosing said coveralong thexside edges of"said spaced walls atone end ofsaid horizontal bar, andmeansfor 15 rel'easably securing together the lower portions of'the sideedges of said spaced: walls at the other end of saidhorizontal bar to prevent the cover from being removed by movementaxiallyof'saidhorizontal bar.-
4. The combination set forth in claim 3 wherein said cover is provided with an opening in the area of juncture of said fold line and the side edges of said walls which are permanently closed to each other, the end of said horizontal bar having an upwardly hooked portion extending through said opening;
