1 as including a casing or housing 11 having a top side ing device as seen along the lines 4"4 and 5-5, respec- .manually manipulated in opening or slot 13 for viewing thetotal, of the numberswhich have been added by the .device 10; Four longitu-' dinally aligned openings 14,.formed in the side 12 in a transversely spaced relation with the total viewing slot 13 are provided for observing each separate entry or addition as it is registered on the device 10. Four knurled or ser:-v
rated operating discs or members 16, corresponding-to the separate entry viewing openings 14, project'outwardly through slots 17 formed in the casing 11 to one side of the viewing openings 14, with the operating discs 16 being the device 10. V i
For convenience of description, the sides 18 and 19 of the device 10 will hereinafter be referred to as the right and left sides, respectively, since in a normal operation of the device 10, the device is carried in the left hand of the operator.
Arranged within the casing 11 is a frame 21 which consists of a pair of longitudinally spaced identical side plates 22 and 23 (Figs. 2 and 3) generally rectangular in shape and including semi-circular end portions 24. -A pair of frame connecting members 26 and 27 extend between and are secured at their ends to the side plates 22 and 23, by means of cap screws 28 extended through the side members 22 and 23 adjacent the ends 29 thereof, and threaded into the adjacent ends of the connecting frame members 26 and 27. A pair of connecting frame; rods 31 and 32 (Figs. 3'and 4); extend between intermediate portions ofthe side plates 22 and 23-for further maintaining the plates 22 and 23 in a spaced relation;
Extended through the side plates 22 and 23, -at positions corresponding substantially to the centers of the curved end portions '24 of the plates 22 and 23, is' aseparate entry shaft .33 provided on-its-right end with aremovable knurled operating knob 34. A total entry shaft 36 is extended through the side plates 22 and 23 in a transversely spaced relation with the separate entry ings 14, are four separate entry assemblies 41, 42, 43 and 44. Since the separate entry assemblies are identical,-
only theright assembly 44 will be described in detail, with like' numerals indicating like parts on the assemblies. i
Theseparate entr-y assembly 44 (Figs. 2 and 3) consists' of a separate entry number wheel 46 having the numbers zero to, nine, inclusive, formed on the periphery thereof, with the numbers increasing in a clockwise di-" rection about the wheel 46 as viewed in Fig. 3. Onits leftside, and opposite one of the numbers formed on the periphery thereof, and illustrated as opposite the digit 2 in Fig. 2, each separate entry wheel 46 is provided with an axially extended opening 47 for receiving a pin 48 registering separate ,entries on,
having a rounded outer end 49 (Fig. 7). A compression spring 51 is positioned within the opening 47 for exerting an outward pressure on the pin 48. An outwardly extended peripheral projection 52 having a serrated periphcry. 53 is formed on the numbered wheel 46 adjacent the right side thereof, and constitutes the operating disc 16 for. the separate entry assembly 44. On its right side, the number wheel 46' is formed with a hub extension 54 on which ismounted, in a press fit, a gear member 56 having teeth 57. i I
Rotatably mounted on the total entry shaft 36, and corresponding to the separate- entry assemblies 41, 42, 43 and 44, are four total entry carrying assemblies 61, 62, 63 and 64. Since the total carrying assemblies are identical inconstruction, only the right assembly 64 will be describedin detail, with like numerals indicating like parts on the assembly.
I The assembly 64 (Figs. 2 and 3) consists of a number carrying wheel 66 having numbers 67 from zero to nine, inclusive, formed on the periphery thereof, and increasingin a direction counterclockwise of the wheel 66, as viewed in Fig. 3. An opening 68 formed in the left side of the number wheel 66 receives a transfer pin 71 and a compression spring 69 arranged to exert an outward pressure on the pin 71 (Fig. 6 1
' The right side of the number wheel 66 is formed with a reduced extension 72 (Fig. 3) which terminates at its right end in a further reducedwheel extension 73, and
adjacent the right end 74 of the extension'are ten cam shaped notches or recesses 76, adjacent an annular shoulder 77 provided by the interface between extensions 72 and 73. Each notch 76 includes a flat side 78 and a curved side 79 for a purpose to appear later.
Mounted on the wheel extension 73 (Fig. 3), about the notches 76 and against the shoulder 77, is a gear 81 having teeth 82, of a number and size corresponding to the number and size of the teeth 57, on the gear 56 for the separate entry assembly 44. A resilient pawl 83, formed of a flat spring material and of a width correspondin to the thickness of the gear 81, has one of its ends frictionally held within an irregular shaped slot 84 formed at the inner side of the gear 81, with the opposite or free end 86 of the pawl 83 extending toward the shaft 36 for engagement withthe cam shaped notches 76.
A transferwheel 87 (Fig. 3) is received on the number wheel projection 73 against the right end 74 of the extension 72, and is maintained thereon by a pin shaped key 88 inserted in a hole 89 drilled in the right side of the number wheel 66 and in cooperating key ways 65 and 70 formed, respectively, in the periphery of the projection 73 and the inner periphery of the transfer wheel 87. Theright side of the transfer Wheel 87 is formed with ten equally spaced outwardly projected cam shaped transfer teeth 91, with each tooth 91 including a flat end face 92 and a curved or cam face 93. The transfer teeth 91 are arranged on the transfer wheel 87 a distance from the total entry shaft 36 corresponding to the distance that the transfer pin 71 on the left side of the number wheel 66 is spaced from the total shaft 36. Also, for a purpose to appear later, the outer periphery of the transfer wheel 87 is formed with ten equally spaced substantially semicircular cut-out portions 94 to thus form ten peripheral projections 96 between the cut-out portions 94, with each projection 96 including a lateral extension 97.'
It can thus be seen that the transfer wheel 87 for each of the total entry carrying assemblies 6 1, 62 and 63 is arranged adjacent the spring pressed transfer pin 71 for the assembly adjacent and to the right thereof, with a cam shaped transfer tooth 91 being arranged opposite andin. axialalignment with an adjacent transfer pin 71. The transfer wheel87 for, the right hand assembly 64 is 10. Also, the transfer pin 71 for the assembly 61 is eliminated since such assembly is at the extreme left end of the total entry shaft 36.
In the assembly of the separate entry assemblies 41-- 44, inclusive, and the total carrying assemblies 61-64, inclusive, on the supporting frame 21, a pair of spacer discs 98 (Fig. 2) are received on the separate entry shaft 33 against the inner side of the end plate 23, with a simi-- lar pair of spacer discs 99 also being mounted on the total entry shaft 36 against the inner side of the end plate 23. The separate entry number Wheel 46, with the gear 56 mounted on the wheel extension 54 and against the right side of the peripheral projection 52 on the number wheel 46, is received on the shaft 33 and the outer end of the extension 54 is moved against the innermost spacer plate 98.
The total entry carrying assembly-F64, includes the number wheel 66 having the gear 81 and the transfer not opposite any transfer pin since such assembly is at the extreme right end of the total entry carrying shaft 36;
Thus, the transferwheel 87 for the assembly 64 performs notransfer function in theoperation of the adding device tively, in the divider plate 101.
wheel 87 mounted thereon, is received on ithe total shaft 36 with the right end of the wheel projection 73 moved against the innermost spacer plate 99; With the assemblies 44 and 64 thus arranged on their respective shafts 33 and 36, the gears 56 and 81- are in meshing engagement.
A divider plate 101 (Fig. 3) is positioned against the left sides of the corresponding number wheels 46 and 66, with the separate entry shaft 33 and the total entry circular end portion 24 on the end frame plates 22 and 1 23. A series of ten equally spaced holes 107 are formed in the divider plate 101, with such holes 107 being arranged in a circular path about the opening 102 which 3 receives the separate entry shaft 33, and with the spacing of the holes 107 from the shaft 33 corresponding to the;-
spacing of the pin 48 inthe number wheel 46 from the shaft 33 for a purpose to appear later. Similar holes, 107,; are formed in the end portions 24- of the end frame plates 22 and 23 (Figs. .2 and 3),.
As best appears in Fig. 3, the di"ider plate101j,,ad jacent the end 112 thereof opposite these'rni-circnlar end portion 106, is cut away to form an are shaped outer edge portion 105, with all points on the portion being spaced an equal distance from the total entry shaft 36, and with such distance being only slightly 'less than the distance between the transfer pin '71 and the total entry shaft 36. At the end 108 of the curved edge portion 105, the divider plate 101 is formed with a laterally offset portion 109 positioned to the left of the main portion of the plate 101. The. amount or degree of offset of the portion 109 is gradually decreased until at its end 111 remote from the end 108 of the'curv'ed edge portion 105, the portion 109 is in the plane of the divider plate 101. As best appears in Fig. 5, the offset portion 109 and the end 112 of the plate 101 are positioned in the path of the transfer pin 71 during rotation of the total entry carrying number wheel 66 for the total entry assembly 64,
With the divider plate 101 assembled on the shafts 33 and 36, the separate entry assembly 43 is assembled on the separate entry shaft 33 and the total entry carrying assembly 63 is assembled on the total entry shaft 36, with the extension 54 for the separate entry wheel 46 and the end of the projection 73 for the total entry carrying number wheel 66 being positioned against the left side of the divider plate 101, and with the gear members 56 and 81 for the corresponding assemblies 43 and 63, respec tively, in meshing engagement. A divider plate 101a similar in all respects to the divider plate 101, is then received on shafts 33 and 36 and positioned against the sembly 62 are then assembled on the shafts 33 and 36 and against the divider plate101a in all respects similar to the assembly of the corresponding assemblies 43 and 63 and the divider plate 101- A divider plate 101b (Fig. 2) is positioned against the left side of the number wheels 46 and 66 for the assemblies .42 and 62, respectively, andthe left most assemblies 41 and 61 are then assembled on the shafts 33 and 36, respectively. The end frame plate 22 is positioned against the left sides of the number wheels 46 and 66 for'the assemblies 41 and 61, respectively, to maintain the assemblies on the shafts 33and 36.
With theseparate entry and total entry assemblies thus assembled on the frame 21, the casing 11 is positioned about the frame 21 to enclose thesame. The casing 11 (Figs. 1 and 2) includes an intermediate or main cover member 113 extended transversely about the frame 21 and having the viewing slot 13 and viewing openings 14 formed therein, with the cover member 113 being maintained in a position about the separate entry assemblies and the total entry carrying assemblies by a pair of end casing or cap members 114 and 115 having peripheral flanges 116 which are engaged about opposite sides of the cover member 113. A sheet 100 of transparent plastic material is preferably positioned against the underside of v the cover member 113 so as to extend across the slot 13.
In the use of the adding device 10, a number to be added is registered on the separate entry wheels 46 by manipulation of the operating discs 16. Immediately following this operation the registered number is cleared, namely, the separate entry wheels are returned to their zero indicating positions shown in' Fig. 1; to provide for the visual recording or registering of a next number to be added.
Each separate entry wheel 46 (Fig. 7) includes. an axial cavity 117 open to the left side of the wheel 46. A pin 118 is extended through the wheel 46 from the right side thereof so that a portion 119 of the pin 118 extends into the cavity 117, from the bottom wall 126 thereof, and with such portion 119 being of a length substantially equal to one-half the depth of the cavity 117. The pin portion 119 is arranged adjacent the cavity side wall 121 at a position substantially in radial alignment with one of the numbers, illustrated as the number 1 in Fig. 3, on the wheel 46. At longitudinally spaced positions, the separate entry shaft 33 is provided with radially extended clearing pins 122 (Fig. 7), with each pin 122 being positioned adjacent a pin 118 in a number wheel 46, and within the cavity 117 for such wheel 46. The pin 122 is of a length such that its outer end 123 is positioned adjacent the wall 121 for its corresponding cavity 117 The separate entry shaft 33 is mounted in vice for longitudinal movement relative to the casm 1 1 and the frame 21 between an inner position A shownin full lines and an outer position B shown in dotted li'nes in Fig. 7. Position A is defined by the engagement of. the end 124 of the shaft 33 with the casing end plate 115 (Fig. 2), which is provided with a pair of outwardly projected shaft receiving dimples 120 only one of which is shown) and in which the corresponding left ends of the shafts 33 and 36 are movably positioned. The outer or clearing position B (Fig. 7) of the shaft 33 is defined by the engagement of the clearing pins 122 on the shaft '33 with their corresponding cavity bottom walls 126.
' During the registering or recording of a number on a separate entry wheel 46, the separate entry shaft 33 is in its inner position A (Fig. 7), and the separate entry wheels 46 are rotated counterclockwise as viewed in Fig. 3. To clear such recorded number and return the separate entry wheels 46 to their zero indicating positions shown in Fig. 1, the separate entry shaft 33 is first moved outwardly, by manipulation of the knurled knob 34, to
its dotted line or outer position B, shown in Fig. 7, and the shaft 33 is rotated in a clockwise direction as. viewed in Fig. 3.
During such clockwise rotation of the shaft 33, the clearing pins 122 are in their dotted line positions shown in Fig. 7 corresponding to the outer position B of the shaft 33, and engage the projected pin portions 119 on the corresponding number wheels 46 to thus rotate the number-wheels 46 in clockwise directions with the shaft 33. Since all of the pin portions 119 are radially aligned with the same number on the corresponding number wheels 46, it is apparent that regardless of the numbers that are registered on the various number wheels 46,
rotation of the shaft 33 returns all of the number wheels 46 to their zero indicating positions.
It can thus be seen, that the separate entry shaft 33, the clearing pins 122, and the projected pin portions 119 on the wheels 46 constitute the clearing mechanism for the device 10 for returning the separate entry wheels 46 to their zero indicating positions.
In the operation of the adding device 10, the separate entry shaft 33 is moved, by manipulation of the knob 34, to its inner position A (Fig. 7) so that the clearing pins 122 are rotatable in a clearance relation with the pin portions 119. On rotation of the appropriate operating discs 16 in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 1, the desired number to be added is visually registered on the corresponding number wheels 46 and appears in the casing openings 14. 1
The number wheels 46 are maintained in moved number indicating positions by the reception of the ends 49 of "the spring pressed pins 48 in the openings 107 in the end plate 22 and the divider plates 101, 101a and 101k. In other words, a pin 48 is received in an opening 107 concurrently with the positioning of each number on the corresponding number wheel 46 opposite the viewing opening 14. Thus, by virtue of the pins 48, the operator feels a number wheel 46 pass through the ten number indicating positions therefor, during manipulation of the corresponding operating disc 16.
Concurrently with this manipulation of the operating discs 16,,the number being recorded on the number wheels 46 is also being added or transferred to the total of the numbers previously added, which total is visually recorded on the total entry number wheels 66 and appears in the casing slot 13. In other words, by virtue of the meshing engagement of the gears 56 and 81 for corresponding separate entry of the gears 56 and 81 for corresponding separate entry and total entry assemblies, respectively, rotation of a separate entry number wheel 46 results in a corresponding rotation of the corresponding total number wheel 66 to thereby add the number recorded on such wheel 46 to the number previously recorded on the wheel 66.
If such addition causes the total number wheel 66 to move to or past its zero indicating position, the number wheel 66 immediately to the left thereof is moved up one number by the transfer pin 71 (Figs. 3 and 6) for the first mentioned wheel 66. Stated otherwise, when a number wheel 66 is moved to a position indicating the number nine, the transfer pin 71 therefor is moved into engagement with one of the transfer teeth 91 (Fig. 3) on the transfer wheel 87 for the total entry assembly in1- mediately to the left of such number wheel 66. On further rotation of the number wheel 66, to a zero indicating position therefor, the number wheel 66 immediately to the left thereof is also moved up one number by virtue of the above mentioned engagement of a tfansfer pin 71 with one of the transfer teeth 91, after which the pin 71 moves out of engagement with the transfer teeth 91.
To clear the total entry recorded on the total number wheels 66, on the completion of an adding operation, the total shaft 36 is moved outwardly, by manipulation of the knurled knob 37, to a dotted line position B (Fig.
6)v and the total entry shaft 36 is rotated in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3. Radially projected pins 161 which are in their dotted line positions shown in Fig. 6
on the shaft 36, engage the projected or inner end portions 162 of the pins 88 to thus rotate the number wheels 66 in clockwise directions with the shaft 36. The pins 88 are radially aligned with the same number, illus trated as the number 9 in Fig. 3, on the number wheels 66 so that on rotation of the shaft 36 in a clockwise direction the number wheels 66 can all be returned to their zero indicating positions. Following such clearing of the total entry, the shaft 36 is returned to its inner position A (Fig. 6) in preparation for another adding operation.
As an example of a complete adding operation with the device 10, assume that it is desired to add the numbers 554 and 789 on the device 10. The operating discs 16 for the separate entry assemblies 42, 43, and 44 are rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1, until the numbers 5, and 4 are registered on the number wheels 46 for the assemblies 42, 43 and 44, respectively. In other Words, with the device 10 held in the left hand, and with the operating discs 16 arranged adjacent the operator, the discs 16 are rotated in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. l,
with the right hand until the number 554 appears through the viewing openings 14 for the assemblies 42, 43 and 44.
During such rotation of the number wheel 46 for the separate entry assembly 44, the gear 56 for such assembly is concurrently rotated in' the same direction as the wheel 46 by virtue of its press fit mounting on the wheel hub extension 54. The meshing engagement of the gear 56 with the gear 81 of the total carrying assembly 64, imp-arts a concurrent rotation to the gear 81 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 3, with such .gear 81 being rotated through the same angle as the gear 56 by virtue of the teeth 82 on the gear 81 being of the same size and number as the teeth 57 on the gear 56.
As a result of the engagement of the end 86 of the pawl 83 (Fig. 3) carried by the gear 81 with the flat side 78 of one of the notches 76 in the number wheel 66, this clockwise rotation of the gear 81 causes a concurrent and identical rotation of the number wheel 66 for the total assembly 64. It can thus be seen, that when the operating disc 16 of the assembly 44, has been manipulated to record the number 4 on the wheel 46, the
number 4 on the number wheel 66 for the total carrying assembly 64 is also positioned opposite the viewing slot 13. Since all the separate entry assemblies are identical and all the total entry carrying assemblies are identical, the numbers 5 are recorded on the number wheels 66 for the total entry carrying assemblies 62 and 63 concurrently with the recording of such numbers on the corresponding separate entry assemblies 42 and 43, respectively.
-The number 554 is then cleared from the separate entry assemblies 42, 43 and 44 by a clockwise rotation of the knurled knob 34 after the knob has been moved outwardly to its position B (Fig. 6), which results in a similar clockwise rotation of the number wheels 46.
During a clockwise rotation of a number wheel 46, the gear 56 therefor is similarly rotated in a clockwise direction to thus impart a counterclockwise rotation to its meshing gear 81. A counterclockwise rotation of a gear 8 1 causes the pawl 83 carried thereby to merely ride along the inclined sides 79 of the notches 76 formed on the corresponding number wheel 66 so that the gear 81 merely slips on or moves relative to the wheel 66. Thus, a counter-clockwise rotation of a gear 81 does not cause any rotation of the number wheel 66 therefor.
To assure the number wheels 66 being releasably maintained in stationary positions, during rotation of the gears 81 for such wheels, four spring fingers 151 tions '15-2 of a contour'to fit within the semi-circular cut away portions 94 in the transfer wheels 87. Thus, since the transfer wheels 87 are secured to their corresponding number wheels 66 by means of the keys 88, any rotation of a number-wheel 66 is against the pressure of its corresponding spring finger 151, with such rotation causing the spring finger 15 1 to ride upwardly out of each cut out portion 94 as the Wheel 66 is rotated.
It can thus be seen that the spring fingers v151 co operate withthe corresponding transfer wheel cut out portions 94 to define the ten moved positions of their corresponding number wheels '66, with the spring fingers 151 also functioning to releasably maintain the number wheels 66 in their moved positions. The semi-circular contour of the cut out portions 94 and the spring finger portions 152 results in the spring fingers 151 actingto assist the movement of their corresponding number wheels 66 to fully moved or number indicating positions. Stated otherwise, a spring finger 151 prevents its corresponding number wheel 66 from being moved to a position in which a pair of the numbers thereon are only partially visible through the slot 13, by virtue of the spring finger portion 152 tending to move the transfer wheel 87 to a position in which the portion 152 is nested Within a cut out portion 94, with a consequent movement of a number on the wheel 66 to a position opposite the viewing slot 13. Each spring finger 15 1 is of a width corresponding to the combined widths of the wheel 87 and the lateral wheel projection 97 to provide for a maximum frictional engagement of the spring finger portion 152 and the transfer wheel 87.
After the number 554 has been cleared, namely, after the separate entry number wheels. 46 have been returned to their zero indicating positions shown in Fig; 1, and with the number 554 registered on the total carrying assemblies 62, 63 and 64 so as tobe visible through the slot 13, the knob '34 is returned to its inner position A. The number 789 is then registered on the separate entry wheels 46 for the assemblies 42, 43 and 44 by rotation of the operating discs 16. The order in which the individual numbers 7, "8 and 9 are registered on the number wheels 46, of the separate entry assemblies 42, 43 and 44, respectively, is immaterial; However, for convenience of description, the operation of the device 10 will be described in detail with the number 9 being-first registered on the wheel 46 of the assembly 44. j
Thus, with the number 4 recorded on the number wheel 66 for the total assembly 64 it is'seen that when the number 9 is registered on the number wheel 46 in response to a counterclockwise rotation of the corresponding operating disc 16, the wheel 66 is rotated through nine numbers to a position in which the number 3 is opposite the slot 13. As best appears in Fig. 5, during the rotation of the number wheel 66 between the 0 and 8 indicating positions therefor, the transfer pin 71 for the wheel 66 is maintained within the hole 68 in the left side of the wheel 66 against the compression of the spring 69, by the contact of the outer end of the pin 71 with the right side of the divider plate 101. However, when the wheel 66 has been rotated to a position indicating the number 9, so that the pin 71 is at a position indicated at C in Fig. 5, the spring 69 moves the pin 71 outwardly in the hole 68 so that the pin 71 extends across the arc-shape surface for the pate 101.
In this position of the pin 71, the outer end of the pin engages the right side of the transfer wheel 87 (Fig. 3) for the total entry assembly 63, at a position adjacent the flat side 92 of one of the transfer teeth 91 for such transfer wheel 87. On further rotation of the wheel 66 to a 0 indicating position therefor, the transfer wheel 87 for the assembly 63 is concurrently rotated by the pin 71 to thus. imparta similar rotation to the number wheel 66 for the assembly 63. Thus, in this instance, the wheel 66 for the assembly 63 is moved to a position indicating the number "6, since the number has been previously registered thereon.
Further rotation of the number wheel 66 for the assembly 64, from the 0 indicating position, results in the immediate engagement of the outer end of the pin 71 with the adjacent end 110 of the laterally oifset divider plate portion 109, as indicated. at D in Fig. 5, with the pin outer end being beveled or tapered as indicated at 153 ,(Fig. 6) to facilitate such engagement. Thus, on further rotation of the number wheel 66 for the assembly 63, the tapered pin end 153 rides on the divider plate portion 109 so as to be out'of engagement with the teeth 91 for the transfer wheel 87 of the assembly 63, with the pin 71 thus riding against the divider plate 101, as indicated at positionE in Fig. 5, until the wheel 66 therefor has been rotated again to a number 9 indicating position.
It is "seen, therefore, that during the last one-tenth of a revolution of the number wheel 66 for the assembly 64, with a revolution beginning at'a zero indicating position, the number wheel 66 for the total entry assembly 63 is concurrently rotated anamount corresponding to one-tenth of a revolution and with the. nine-tenths of a revolution of the wheel 66 for the assembly 64 having no rotating effect on the wheel 66 for the assembly 63.
During this one-tenth of a revolution or one-number rotation of the wheel 66 for the assembly 63, the number' wheel 46 for the corresponding separate entry assembly 43 remains stationary by virtue of the wheel 66 having no rotating efiect on the gear 81 (Fig. 3). Thus, since all of the total entry assemblies 61-64, inclusive, are identical in construction, it is seen that the last onetenth of a revolution of any one of the assemblies, causes the assembly to the left of and adjacent thereto to rotate a corresponding one-tenth of a revolution. The transfer pin 71 on one assembly and the transfer wheel 87 on the adjacent assembly to the left thereof, constitute, therefore, transfer means for the device 10.
The number 8 is recorded on the number Wheel 46 for the separate entry assembly 43 by counterclockwise rotation of the assembly operating disc 16. Such rotation of the disc 16 causes a concurrent and similar rotation of the corresponding number wheel 66 for the total assembly 63, and since the number 6 was previously recorded on such number wheel 66, -a rotation of the wheel 66 through eight numbers results in the registering of the number 4 thereon. Also, since during such rotation of the number wheel '66, the wheel was rotated from 9 to 0, the number wheel 66 for the assembly 62 was rotated through one-tenth of a revolution so that the number 6 is now recorded thereon.
Finally, the number 7 is registered on the number wheel 46 for the separate entry assembly 42, with such rotation of the number wheel 46 causing a concurrent rotation of the number wheel 66 for the total entry assembly 62 through a distance corresponding to seven units. Since the number 6 was previously recorded on the number wheel 66 for the assembly 62, a rotation of such wheel through seven units or numbers results in the registration of the number 3 on the wheel 66. Also, since such wheel is moved from 9 to 0 during such rotation the number wheel 6'6 for the total entry assembly 61 is rotated through onestenth of a revolution so that the number 1 is recorded thereon.
It is seen, therefore, that on the recording of the numbers 7, 8 and 9 on the separate entry assemblies 42, 43 and 44, respectively, the number 1343 is registered on the number wheels 66 for the total entry assemblies 61-64, inclusive, so as to be visible through the viewing slot 13, with this number representing the total of the numbers 554 and 789 which have been added. When it is desired to add a third number to such total, it is only necessary to clear the number 789 from the separate entry assemblies, in the manner previously described, after which the number to be added is applied to the number wheels 46 of the separate assemblies 41- 44, inclusive.
A modified form of the adding device '10 is illustrated in Figs. 8-11, inclusive, which is identical in all respects to the device shown in Figs. l-7, inclusive, except for the construction of the-"clearing mechanism for the separate entry wheels 46. A removable stop nut (Figs. 8 and 11) is substituted for the knurled knob 34 (Figs. 1 and 2) and the clearing pins 118 311(11122 (Fig. 7) are eliminated from the device shown in Figs. 1-7, inclusive. In addition, the spring pressed pins 48 in the number wheels 46 and the holes 107 therefor in the end plate 22 and divider plates 101, 101a and 11011: are eliminated. Like parts on the devices shown in Figs. l-7, inclusive, and Figs. 8-10, inclusive, are, therefore, indicated by like numerals.
Arranged in the cavity 117 (Fig. 10) for each number wheel 46, is a coil spring 131 secured at its inner end 132 to the separate entry shaft 33 and at its outer end 1 33 to the corresponding wheel 46 at the cavity wall 121. Thus, a spring 131 normally biases corresponding number wheel 46 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 10, so that counterclockwise rotation of a number wheel'46, during the registering of a number thereon, is against the bias of a spring 131.
For maintaining the wheels 46 in moved positions during the registering of numbers thereon, four flexible pawls '134 (Figs. 8 and 9), corresponding to the wheels 46 and formed of a flat spring material, are secured at one of their ends to the frame connecting rod 3 1. The opposite end 136 of a pawl 1'34 rides on or frictionally engages the periphery of a notched disc 162 (Figs. 8 and 9) carried in a press fit on the hub extension 54 for the corresponding number wheel 46 at a position outwardly of the gear 56. At equally spaced positions, ten transverse notches 137 (Fig. 9) are formed in the periphery of each disc 162 for engaging the end 136 of a corresponding pawl 134. 1 Each notch 137 is of a substantially V-shape having a. straight side 1 38, extended in a direction radially of the disc 162, and an inclined side 139 for a purpose to appear later.
' 'It is seen, therefore, that a pawl 134 engages a notch .137 in the corresponding disc 162 for each number indicating position of the corresponding number wheel 46. Thus, the pawls 1134 and notches 1-37 transmit a feel to the operating discs 11 6 equivalent to the feel transmitted tothe discs 16 by the pins 48 and holes 107 in the device shown in Figs. 1-7, inclusive.
The right end portion 150 of the frame connecting rod 31, which is journaled at its ends in the frame end plates 22 and 23, is of a reduced diameter and is projected outwardly through the casing end plate 114. An operating handle or' lever 142 (Figs. 8 and 11), having a transversely projected portion 143 positioned adjacent the front flange 11 6 for the casing end plate 114, has a hub portion 145 removably received on the reduced end portion of the rod 31. A nut 1141 on the outer end of the shaft portion 150 maintains the handle 1 42 on the rod 31.
A torsion spring 144, extended between the rod 31 and the frame end plate 23 biases the rod 31 to a position in which the pawls 134 engage the notched'discs 162. In this position of the rod 31, the handle 142 is in its dotted line position F shown in Fig. 1 0. V
The handle 142 is manually operable, against the action of the spring 144, to a position G, illustrated in solid lines in Fig. 11, in which the transversely projected handle portion 143 is against the flange 116 for the easing end plate 114. In this position of the handle 142, the frame connecting rod 31, whichthus functions as a shaft, is rotated in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 11 to thereby rotate the pawls 134 in clockwise di- 11 rections to move the pawl ends 136 out of with the discs 162.
It is seen, therefore, that a knurled operating disc 16 is freely rotatable in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed in Figs. 9 and against the action of the spring 131 for the corresponding number wheel 46. During such rotation, the end 136 of the corresponding pawl 134 merely rides on the periphery of the disc 162. However, any rotation of a number wheel 46in a clockwise direction is prevented by the abutting engagement of a pawl end "136 with the straight side 1 38 of a notch 137 in the periphery of a disc 162, with the handle '142 in its spring biased position F (Fig. 11). On manual movement of the handle 142 to position G, the number wheels 46 and their associated discs 162 and gears 56 are free to rotate in clockwise directions, under the action of the springs 1 31, by virtue of the pawls 164 being moved to positions in a clearance relation with the notched discs 1 62 (Fig. 9).
Thus, in the registering of a number to be added on a separate entry number wheel 46, such wheel 46 is rotated in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 9, until the desired number is opposite the viewing open-- ing 14. During such rotation, the pawl end 136 merely rides on the inclined side 139 for each notch 137 and on the periphery of the disc 162. However, when the desired number has been positioned opposite the viewing opening 14, and the operating disc 16 released, the pawl end 136 engages the flat side 138 of a notch 137 to prevent the spring 131 from rotating the wheel 46 and its associated disc 162 in clockwise directions as viewed in Fig. 9. In other words, the pawl 134 functions to maintain the number wheel 46 in a moved position, with the desired number on the wheel 46 positioned opposite the viewing opening 14.
To clear a number from the wheels 46, the handle 142 is manually moved to position G (Fig. 11) in which the portion 143 thereof contacts the side 12 of the casing 11. Such movement rotates the pawls 134 to positions out of engagement with the peripheries of the discs 162. The springs 131 then operate to rotate the wheels 46 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Figs. 9 and 10.
engagement As best appears in Fig. 9, on movement of the handle 142 to lift the pawls 134 ,out of engagement with the discs 162 the pawls 134 are rotated only slightly-to their positions shown in dotted lines, but with such rotation being sufficient to move the pawl ends 136 out of the path of travel of the notches 137 in the discs 162. A projection 146 (Fig. 9) having a flat side 147 extended in a direction radially of a disc 46 is formed on the periphery of each disc 162. As best appears in Fig. 9, the side 147 of a projection 146 contacts the corresponding pawl end 136 in the raised position of the pawl 134 to prevent further clockwise rotation of the disc 162 past a position in which the number zero on the corresponding number wheel 46 is arranged opposite the corresponding opening 14.
Thus, on movement of the operating handle 142 to its position G, indicated in Fig. 11, all of the number wheels 46 are rotated by their corresponding springs 131 until the numbers zero on such wheels are arranged opposite their corresponding viewing openings 14 to thereby clear the number which has been previously recorded on the separate entry wheels 46.
It is seen, therefore, that with the clearing mechanism shown in Figs. 8-11, inclusive, a number is readily and quickly cleared from the separate entry'wheels 46 by merely moving the clearing handle 142. The tension of the return springs 131 is readily adjusted to provide for the desired quick return of the wheels 46 to their zero positions by manipulation of an adjusting arm 163 mounted on the shaft 33 between the frame plate 23 and the casing end plate 18. On clockwise rotation of the arm 163, as viewed in Fig. 11, the shaft 33 is rotated in a clockwise direction to coil the springs 131 more tightly about the shaft 33 and thus increase the tension of the springs 131. A transversely projected pin164 on the arm 163 is received in one of the openings 107 in the end portion 24 of the frame plate 23 to maintain the arm 162 in an adjusted position. Thus on removal of the casing plate 114, the arm 163 is readily manually adjusted to provide the desired tension in the springs 131.
From the above description, it is seen that this invention provides an adding device 10 which is compact in construction, and which'consists of a plurality of dupli: cated parts, so as to be relatively inexpensive to manufacture. It is to be noted that in the recording of a number to be added on the separate entry assemblies 41-44, inclusive, such number is concurrently added to the total of the numbers previously added on the device 10, so that on the completion of the recording of a number on the separate entry assemblies, such number. has been added to the number previously appearing through the slot 13. Also, until the separate entry assemblies are cleared, which clearing is independent of any clearing of the total, the last number added on the device '10 is visually recorded. The device 10 has been illustrated as including four separate entry assemblies 4144, inclusive, and four corresponding total carrying assemblies 61-64, inclusive, but it is to be understood that as many or as few separate entry and total assemblies may be used as desired, with the total number of assemblies to be used merely depending on the desired size, adding capacity and cost of the adding device 10.
Although the invention has been described with respect to several embodiments thereof, it is to be understood that it is not to be so limited since changes can be made therein which are Within the full intended scope of this invention as defined by the appended claim.
