invention pertains to improved mechanism for such a machine to provide better force resolution and construction features involved in the engagement and rolling of a tool bit by a dressing roll in such a machine.
In the dressing and trimming of tool bits by a machine of the general type set forth in the aforesaid patent, which is commonly owned with this application, the hot forged dressing of tool bits by rolling has shown the existence of significant vertical components of rolling force requiring relatively massive and expensive structure. In addition, where the generally vertical roll cylinder has been connected in an offset manner to linkage extending between the roll and the generally horizontal roll cylinder, some limitation in the size of the roll has been encountered resulting in a somewhat lessened cooling effect tendency and a somewhat greater lubrication chore, particularly when considering the fact that in the course of operation the roll generally does not move through an entire revolution.
In the instant invention, the angular displacement of the horizontal roll cylinder axis is decreased for the same amplitude of vertical movement of the roll. Further, journaling connection between the roll and the vertical roll cylinder producing the stroke in the course of an operation is made coaxial so that under given conditions a larger and generally cooler running dressing roll can be utilized if desired and more economical lubrication of the roll journals provided.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings, which are illustrative only of one embodiment with improved features of this invention, in which Figure 1 is a side view, with parts in section and broken away, illustrating one embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a view taken along line IIII of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view taken along line III-III of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a view taken along line IV-IV of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a machine of the general type set forth in the aforesaid patent may be provided with a rigid frame having a superstructure 11 and a crossbar bed plate 12 for a dressing die 13 adapted to hold a tool for the dressing of its bit end by longitudinal pressure thereagainst of a dressing roll 14 moved vertically in accordance with the con-formation of an operative face 15 on die 13 to dress such tool bit, by roll forging. In view of the full description of such a machine in the afore- -said patent, inclusive of its functioning, parts not needed to illustrate my invention herein are omitted.
A bracket 16 is affixed to frame 10 and providedwith two pairs of transversely spaced ears 17 having registering openings for the journaling of respective transverse sup- 2,909,945 Patented Oct. 27, 1959 porting shafts 18 extending between such openings in each of said pairs of brackets. A cover plate 19 is afiixed to the outside of each side of each pair of brackets 17 to cover the outer ends of such transverse shafts 18. A generally horizontal roll cylinder 20 is provided with cylinder ends 21 and 22. Cylinder end 21 has rearwardly extending lugs 23 which fit between said pairs'of brackets 17 respectively to engage shaft 18. Abearing cap 24 is secured to each of the lugs 23 by bolts'25 to complete the pivotal connection of cylinder 20 to the respective pairs of brackets 17 and thereby to frame 10 of the machine.
A piston rod 26 extends out through cylinder end 22 and is connected to a piston inside cylinder 20, movements of piston rod 26 toward die 13 being caused by the admission of hydraulic liquid tothe head end of cylinder 20 through a port 27, while retraction movement of piston rod 26 in the other direction may be provided for by the admission of hydraulic liquid under pressure to the rod end of cylinder 20 through a port 28. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, any suitable hydraulic circuit provision, inclusive of operating lever controls, may be made for the respective admission of hydraulic liquid to port 27 or port 28 as desired.
The outer end 29 of piston rod 26 has a stud 30 fixed thereto, such outer end further abutting a cross member 31 through which stud 30 extends. A nut 32 and lock washer 33 are utilized in the illustrated embodimentto rigidly secure cross member 31 to piston rod 26. Cross member 31 is provided with a lateral extension 34 on each end thereof. Parallel arms 35 are provided with openings at the respective ends thereof adjacent cross member 31 to fit over the extensions 34, keyways beingcut in such fitted members for the reception of a key 36- so that there is no movement of arms 35 relative to cross member 31 or piston rod 26. The aims 35 are held in fixed relation to cross member 31 by retainer caps 36a which are locked in place by nuts 37 engaging a stud 38 afiixed to each extension 34. The arms 35 and cross member 31 thus form a yoke or clevis connected to the piston rod 26 which is movable relative to the machine frame about the axis of the shafts 18. Thus the vertical force componet for a given amplitude of vertical movement of roll 14 is relatively less because the axis of the shafts 18 are remote rather than proximate relative to the axis of dressing roll 14. The ends of the arms 35 adjacent die 13 are provided with transversely registering openings 39 which receive bearings 40 respectively to journal inner necked journal portions 41 of dressing roll 14 so that dressing roll 14 can rotate only relative to the yoke comprising members 31 and 35, with the axis of roll 14 intersecting the axis of piston rod 26 for maximum pressure effectiveness as roll 14 is maintained in pressing engagement for dressing the cutting end of a tool 42 held by die 13. Thrust washers 14a may be provided between the ends of the roller portion of roll 14 and the inner ends of bearings 40 and openings 39.
superstructure 11 is provided with a pair of spaced brackets 43 between which a lug 44 fits for pivotal connection to brackets 43 by a transverse pivot shaft 45. Lug 44 is connected to the upper end 46 of a substantially vertical roll cylinder 47 having a lower cylinder end 48 through which a piston rod 49 projects. A piston in cyl-- inder 47 moves piston rod 49 downwardly upon the ad-' mission of hydraulic liquid to a port 49a at the head end of cylinder 47, while admission of hydraulic liquid to a port 50 in communication with rod end of 47 will move piston rod 49 upwardly. The up and down move. ments of-piston rod 49 are used to provide the generally vertical stroke component of roll 14 in the course of a tool dressing operation. Any suitable hydraulic circuit and operating lever control for the direction and extent of admission of hydraulic liquid under pressure to port 49a, or to port 50, as may be desired, may be provided as will be apparent to those skilled in the art to whom this invention is disclosed.
The lower end of piston rod 49 is threaded so as to engage a threaded opening 51 in a cross member 52, a nut 52a being employed to insure a lock nut connection between piston rod 49 and cross member 52. Cross member 52 is provided with depending arms 53 to each side thereof, the edge 54 of such arms toward die 13 being sloped upwardly and away from such die in the illustrated embodiment. The lower ends of the arms 53 are provided with bearing recesses which fit around the outer necked journal portions 55 of roll 14, a bearing 56 being positioned between such recess and each such outer necked portion 55. A bearing cap 57 is affixed to the bottoms of the arms53 by bolts 58 completing the coaxial pivotal connection between roll 14 and the yoke comprising members 52'and 53. A retainer plate 59 is afiixed by a bolt 60 to each end of roll 14 the axis of which intersects the axis of piston rod 49. Thereby, when a tool 42 is held for dressing by a closed die 13 having respective downward projections 61 and upward projections 62 used in such holding, operation of a tool dressing machine embodying my invention disclosed herein not only provides for a lessened vertical force component in the course of its rolling action but also enables a larger roll 14 to be used with better cooling effect and improved lubrication functioning as well as better force application by the piston rods in that their respective axes intersect the axis of roll 14.
Various modifications of the illustrated embodiment of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. -In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, said die having a generally concave face in a vertical direction, a generally horizontally disposed cylinder pivotally connected about a transverse axis to said frame adjacent the end thereof farther from said die, a piston rod extending toward said face from the end of said first-mentioned cylinder nearer to said die, a yoke rigidly connected to the outer end of said first-named piston rod, two parallel arms in said first-named yoke extending toward said die and having bearings therein in transverse registry adjacent the ends of said arms proximate to said face, a dressing roll mounted in said bearings with its axis intersecting the axis of said first-named piston rod, a generally vertically disposed cylinder pivotally connected about atransverse axis to said frame adjacent the end thereof farther from said roll, a piston rod extending toward said roll from the end of said second-named cylinder nearer to said roll with the axis of said second-named piston rod intersecting the axis of said roll, and a yoke rigidly connected to the outer end of said second-named piston rod, two arms in said second-named yoke extending to the outer ends of said roll and having bearings therein in transverse registry, said arms generally sloping upwardly and away from said face, said roll further being mounted in said second-named bearings of said second-named yoke, whereby said roll may be made to press engage and dress a tool held by said die by vertical rolling movement of said roll.
2. In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, said die having an operative face, a generally horizontally disposed cylinder pivotally connected about a transverse axis to said frame adjacent the end thereof farther from said die, a piston rod extending toward said face from the end of said cylinder nearer to said die, a yoke rigidly connected to said piston rod adjacent its outer end, said yoke having two arms extending toward said die, a dressing roll mounted in said amns for rotatable movement only relative thereto with its axis intersecting the axis of said piston rod, and means coaxial with said roll for the further mounting thereof to move said roll vertically, whereby said roll may be made to press and dress a tool held by said die by vertical rolling movement of said roll.
3. In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, said die having an open face, a generally vertically disposed cylinder pivotally connected about a transverse axis to said frame adjacent the end thereof farther from said die, a piston rod extending toward said die from the end of said cylinder nearer to said die, a yoke rigidly connected to said piston rod adjacent its outer end, said yoke having two arms extending toward said die, a dressing roll mounted in said arms for rotatable movement only relative thereto with its axis intersecting the axis of said piston rod, and means coaxial with said roll for the further mounting thereof to move said roll horizontally, whereby said roll may be made to press and dress a tool held by said die by vertical rolling movement of said roll.
4. In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, a generally horizontal cylinder pivotally connected to said frame in opposed relation to said die about an axis adjacent the remote end of said cylinder, a piston rod extending from said horizontal cylinder in the direction of, said die, a dressing roll connected to said piston rod, said roll being swingable about an axis substantially intersecting the axis of said piston rod adjacent said remote end of said cylinder, and means coaxial with said roll for the further mounting thereof in a rotatable manner to move said roll vertically.
5. In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a' frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, a generally vertical cylinder pivotally connected to said frame in opposed relation to said die, the axis of said pivotal connection of said vertical cylinder being fixed relative to said frame, a piston rod extending from said vertical cylinder in the direction of said die, a dressing roll connected to said piston rod, said roll being swingable and rotatable respectively about axes substantially intersecting the axis of said piston rod adjacent said pivotal connection of said cylinder to said frame and said connection of said dressing roll to said piston rod, and means coaxial with said roll for the further mounting thereof in a rotatable manner to move said roll horizontally.
6. In a tool dressing machine, apparatus comprising, in combination, a frame for said machine, a die adapted to be secured to said frame and hold a tool to be dressed, a generally horizontal cylinder pivotally connected to said frame in opposed relation to said die about an axis adjacent the remote end of said cylinder, a piston rod extending from said horizontal cylinder in the direction of said die, a generally vertical cylinder pivotally connected to said frame in opposed relation to said die, a piston rod extending from said vertical cylinder in the direction of said die, and a dressing roll connected to said piston rods, said roll being swingable about axes substantially and respectively intersecting the axes of said piston rods adjacent the remote ends of said respective cylinders.
