BENJAMIN JOSEPH JOHN GG'ULDIIQ'G, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSZGNOR- TO LINGTYPE MACHINERY LIMITED, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, A BRITISH COMPANY.
ROTARY VIEB OFFSET PRINTING MACHXNE.
Original application filed June 30, 1924. Serial No. 723,084. and in Great Britain July 12, 1923. Divided and this application filed July 8, 1925.
This invention relates to rotary Web offset printing machines and has for its object to provide a new or improved construction whereby adjustments of a transfer cylinder relatively to the co-operating forme cylinder and companion transfer cylinder can be readily effected without shifting of the forme cylinder.
The invention comprises a transfer cylinder so arranged as to be adjustable relatively to the respective forme cylinde both about the axis of the last named cylinder and towards and away from that axis.
The invention is applicable to machines for perfecting printing by either offset on both sides of a web, or offset on one side and direct printing on the other side, or for single side printing by offset.
The invention will now be described by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one constructional form adapted for offset printing on both sides of the web, only such parts of the machine being represented as are considered pertinent; and
Figure 2 is a plan of a part of Figure 1.
In the constructional form represented in the d 'awings there are provided two forme cylinders 1, the shafts or trunnions 2 of which rotate about stationary axes in the two side frames 3 of the machine; of these two side frames only that on the near, or so-called plain, side of the machine is represented. 5 represent the two transfer cylinders constituting a printing couple and the shafts 13 of which are journalled in eccentric bushes 14 angularly adjustable in the respective side frames 3, each of said bushes, for this lastnamed purpose, being provided with an outstanding arm 7 to which is pivoted the upper end of a link 6 provided with a turnlnickle 6 which latter permits of the effective length of said link being varied. The lower end of the links 6 are connected to suitable lever and link or equivalent mechanism by which they can be operated conjointly or individually.
The eccentric bushes 14 are each angularly adjustable within an outer eccentric bush 38, their angular disposition relatively to the bushes 38 and companion forme cylinder being such that when so adjusted they serve to move the respective transfer cylinder 12 to- Serial No. 42,230
wards and away from the said forine cylinder 1, while the adjustmentof the outer eccentric bushes 38 angularly about the bushes 1-1 serves to move the same transfer cylinder bodily about the axis of the last-named forme cylinder.
For effecting the just-named adjustment of the outer bush 38', the flange of this latter is formed with a segmental toothed rack 39 with which engages a tooth-ed sector 40 in tegral with a hand lever 41 which is capable of being turned on a pivot 412 fast to the respective side frame 3. The just-mentioned flange is further provided wit-h arcual slots 43 traversed by clamping bolts 44 threaded, in the example illustrated, into the bearing cap 45, these bolts being loosened only when it is desired to adjust the outer bush 38.
The turnbuckles 6 are provided with lock nuts 8, by which they can be secured in any position of adjustment.
It has heretofore been suggested to e1nploy two angularly adjustable eccentric bushes one within the other, for moving a forme cylinder relatively to an impression surface, but these were proposed both for moving the forme cylinder outward from, and inward towards the impression surface and one for regulating the printing pressure and the other for tripping, as when a sheet is missed. This arrangement differs from that according to the present invention in so far as the two nested bushes of the latter are so angularly related to eachother and to the co-operating surfaces, the pressure between which is to be adjusted, that angular movement of one bush serves to move the adjustable cylinder about the axis of the forme cylinder while angular movement of the other bush serves as heretofore to move one cylinder towards .or away from the cooperating printing element.
Having described my invention, I declare that what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a rotary web offset printing machine, the combination with the machine frame and two forme cylinders rotating about stationary axes therein, and two transfer cylinders constituting a printing couple and each contacting with one of the forme cylinders and a fixed bearing in the frame for each of the transfer cylinders, of an eccentric bush angu larly adjustable in the fixed bearing, a
lUU
toothed sector operatively engaging the bush for effecting said angular adjustment, looking means securing said bush in adjusted position, a second eccentric bush angular-1y adjustable Within the first-named one and having the shaft of the transfer cylinder rotatable Within it, and lever and link devices operatively engaging the second ec centric bush for eflecting its angular adjustment. 10
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature hereto.
BENJAMIN JOSEPH JOHN GOULDING.
