CIGAR-MAKING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,954, dated December 25, 1883.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, J OHN R. WILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Making Apparatus, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.

This invention consists in the combination, with a rolling-table having a cigar-binder laid thereon, of a two-part mold hinged to the table and operating to guide the workman in depositingthe filler in the proper shape and amount directly upon the binder.

It is immaterial whether the two parts of the mold be hinged to the table at a point opposite the head, tuck, or side of the cigar, provided they are constructed to form the required filler direct-ly upon the binder, and to then separate to clear the filler while the workman rolls the same in the binder. It is also immaterial whether the two parts of the mold be closed and opened by hand or by connections to the feet of the operator, as the invention consists in the combination above set forth independent of the means for opening or closing the parts of the mold.

To illustrate the invention, I have therefore shown it in its simplest form, Figure 1 exhibiting, in perspective, an apparatus hav ing the two parts of the mold hinged to the table at points opposite the side of the cigar, and arranged in readines for the formation of the filler, the halves of the mold being closed by folding down upon the table and the cigarbinder laid thereon. Fig. 2 shows the same apparatus with the filler formed and the parts of the mold opened in readiness for the rolling operation.

In the drawings, A is the ordinary rollingtable, usually made of tough wood upon the end of the grain. B B are two boards hinged to the edges of the table, and constructed to meet at their free edges when folded down upon the table, where the cigar-binder is represented as lying upon the table beneath the joint or union of the two boards; and D D are recesses or notches cut in the adjacent edges of the boards to form the mold for, the

filler. \Vhen the boards are folded down upon the table, as in Fig. 1, the notches meet, and being cut to the form of the cigar andextending all the way through the boards, they serve as an exact-guide in forming and de positing the filler upon the binder, which may be laid upon the table, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the filler will lie nearest to one end of the binder. I

The operator in using this apparatus lays a binder in the proper place upon the table, folds the boards down upon it, and then fills the mold D with the bits of tobacco, taking care to distribute them in such shape as to fill the head and butt of the mold equally, When the mold is properly filled, he raises the boards, thus separating the two parts of the mold from one another, and leaving the filler lying upon the binder, in which it is then rolled, and laid aside to be pressed to shape in the usual manner.

By the use of such an apparatus unskilled laborers are enabled to form cigar-bunches with much uniformity of size and shape from long fillers, while it has heretofore been difficult to produce long-filler bunches by hand except with skillful and high-priced operatives.

I am aware that various forms of molds have been used in cigar-bunching machines, and I do not, therefore, claim as my invention a mold for shaping or measuring acigar-filler; but I am not aware thatv any device has been made for forming or shaping and measuring the cigar-filler directly upon the binder, and as such an apparatus for preparing the cigarfiller greatly facilitates the production of uniform bunches by hand labor,

I claim the same in the following-manner:

The combination, with a table for supporting the cigar-binder, of atwo-part mold hinged to the table so as to lie over or upon the binder, and which serves to guide the operator in depositing the filler directly upon the binder, substantially as herein set forth.
