vs ATToRNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO MALVINE HAM- MERSTEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECFCATION forming' To all whom it may concern:
of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Making Cigars and Cigarettes, ot' which the foliowing is a speeication.
Figure lisa plan or top view of my improved machine for making cigars and cigarettes. Fig. 2 is a bottom view ot' the swiyeled suc- Io tion-plate thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section of the machine, the linec c. Fig. l, indicating the planeof section Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section taken on the plabne ofthe line k lc, Fig. l.
I5 This invention relates to improvements on l machinery for holding the wrappers of cigars and cigarettes in place on the table before and at the time such wrappers are being applied as coverings to cigars and cigarettes; and it zo consists in the employment of a hollow and movable table, which table has a perforated upper face, in connection with suction apparatus that communicates with the hollow space in said movable table.
The invention also consists in further details ofimprovement, that are hereinafter more fully specified.
The invention is an improvement on the. patent, No. 261,849, granted to me Augustl, 1882. In the accompanying drawings, the ietterA represents the suction-pipe, which is in communication with suitable apparatus for drawing air through it. From this pipe A project, at proper intervals, branches B, each of which branches communicates with atable, C. A
suitable valve, that can he raised or lowered at will by a treadle or otherwise, is contained in each branch B, as indicated at ct in Fig. 3. The table C is by preference of about the form 4o shown in Itigs. l and 2-that is, more or less oval-and has its` upper face constructed ot a sheet-metal plate, b, (although other material may be employed,) through which plate are drilled series of small openings, that are indicated at d. Below this perforated portion d the table C is hollow, having an elongated space, e, that is clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and in this space there is, by preference, a vertical rib or ribs, f,for the support 0f of the perforated portion ot' the plate b, to prevent it sagging down under the iniiuence of part of Letters Patent No. 272,958, dated February 27, 1883.
Application led November 28, 18825 (No model.)
suction. The upper end of each branch pipe Be it known that I, OSCAR HAMMERsrEIN,
B passes through a stationary platlorm, l). and extends somewhatabove said platform, as shown in Fig. 3, and this portion of the pipe B which extends above the platl'orm D enters acircular hole in the bottom ol' the table C, and communicates with the space e thatis in said table, all 'as clearly indicated in Fig. 3.
The table C rests'on the platform D. The at- 6otendant can place the wrapper for a cigar or cigarette upon the perforated part of the table C. and opening the valve a, the suction will .cause this wrapper to be held tightly to the surface of the table C. The bunch or lling part of the cigar orcigarette can then be placed upon one end of the wrapper, and being rolled along, the wrapper will be caused to be wound upon it in proper manner, the suction meanwhile holding so much of the wrapper as is not 7o yet wound around the bunch dat upon the table. While operating. the attendant can turn the table around the end of the pipe B, so as to always have the bunch properly before him.. thus making it unnecessary for the attendant to partly walk around the table in laying the wrapper around the bunch oitohacco.
Instead of placing the table C around the projecting end of the pipe` B, as shown in Fig. 3, any .other manner of swiveling the table C 8o to said pipe B, and at the same time allowing communication between the space e ot' the table and the pipe B, may be substituted without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claiml. The swiveled table C, having perforated top plate, and space e below said top plate, combined with the pipe B, which communicates with said space c, 'and constitutes the center around which the table can be turned, 9c substantially as described.
2. The table C, having perforated top plate, b, and space e below said top plate, in combination with the ribf, substantially as and for the purpose described.
This specitication ot' my invention signed by me this 27th day of November, 1882.
OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN.
