1 Claim. (Cl. 287-62) This invention relates to snow plow shoe supporting structures, and, more particularly, to a device for effecting adjustment thereof.
While various types of adjustment devices have been proposed for use in connection with snow plow shoes, they have met with varying degrees of success because of the difficulties encountered in properly lubricating the associated elements and arranging the parts so that the adjustments mechanism does not bind in use. An object of this invention therefore, is to provide a snow plow shoe adjustment device that is simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and will overcome the aforementioned difliculties.
Another object of this invention, is to provide a snow plow shoe adjustment device that is simple to operate, having positive position locking means, and which is adapted to be supplied with a constant source of lubricating material.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view, partly in section, of a device made in accordance with this invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary front elevational view of van operating part of the assembly shown in Figure 1,
showing three operative positions of adjustment thereof.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, an adjustment device made in accordance with this invention is shown to include a hollow cylindrical housing having a substantially circular bearing plate 12 integrally connected intermediate its ends. A recess 13 is disposed around the circumference of the bearing plate 12 and is adapted to slidably engage an arcuate portion 14 of a supporting plate 15 that is secured through the snow plow driving apparatus. The circumferential recess 13 also is engaged by a semi-circular bail that has a terminal portion of reduced thickness 17 that is hingedly connected to a similar section of reduced thickness 16 of the sup porting plate 15 by means of a hinge pin 21 that is maintained in assembly therewith such as by cotter pins 22. The opposite end of the bail is provided with an outwardly turned ear 24 that is in juxtaposed relationship with a similar car 25 secured to the bearing plate 15. The bail 20 is adapted to be drawn into securing engagement with the recess 13 of the cylindrical housing 10 by means of a bolt 26 that extends therethrough into threaded engagement with the ear 25 carried bythe supporting plate.
An internally threaded circular sleeve 28 is secured to the inside surface 29 of the housing. A longitudinally disposed shaft 32 having a threaded portion in engagement with the internal threads of the circular sleeve, extends outwardly through the open end of the housing 10 through a pair of retaining rings 34 which main- Patented Oct. 20, 1959 tain an absorbent washer or gasket 35 within the interior of said housing and said shaft so as to maintain a lubricant such as oil, grease or the like within the interior of the housing. The opposite end of the housing is closed and has a hexagonal turning head 37 disposed on the outside surface thereof so as to provide means for rotating the housing relative to the shaft 32. A port 38 is provided adjacent to the closed end of the housing so as to permit communication between the interior of the housing and the atmosphere to prevent a pressure buildup or vacuum from being introduced to the interior of the housing during longitudinal movement of the shaft 32. The outer end of the shaft 32 is provided with a flat portion 40 having an oblong opening 41 therein that is adapted to receive the connecting pin 43 of a shoe hanger 45 that is associated with the plow structure.
In operation, the position of the shaft 32 relative to the housing 10 may be adjusted by loosening the securing bolt 26 which holds the bail 20 in securing engagement with the housing, whereupon the entire housing 10 may be rotated through the hexagonal turning head 37 so as to effect a longitudinal adjustment of the shaft 32 relative to the housing. When the desired position is obtained, the securing bolt 26 is again tightened so as to maintain the housing and shaft in the desired adjusted position. Referring to Figure 3, it will be recognized that the oblong slot 41 permits the shoe hanger 45 to move from an initial position 45 to an intermediate position 45a, and to an opposite extreme position 45b. During this movement, the connection pin 43 moves from engagement with one extremity of the oblong slot to the other extremity 43a, and then back again to its initial position 43b, so as to prevent any binding of the associated elements of the apparatus. The provision of the gasket 35 at the open end of the housing permits a lubricant to be maintained with the interior of the housing to further facilitate the operation of the apparatus.
While this invention has been described with particu lar reference to the specific form shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claim appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
Apparatus for adjusting the position of a snow plow shoe comprising, in combination, a longitudinal tubular housing adapted to be supported upon a prime mover for rotation about a longitudinal axis, said housing being closed at one end and open at the opposite end, an internally threaded sleeve secured to the interior surface of said housing, an elongated shaft having a threaded portion at one end in threaded engagement with said sleeve and extending outwardly through said open end of said housing, the outer end of said shaft including an oblong opening slidably receiving an associated shoe hanger, means for rotating said housing relative to said shaft, said closed end of said housing further including a port communicating with the interior of said closed end of said housing at the exterior thereof whereby pressure within said housing is constantly maintained, and said open end of said housing including a gasket in sealing engagement with the interior of said housing and said shaft.
