ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 290,643, dated December 18, 1883.
` Application Elea september 21, isss. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. J oYcE, of Plainville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Ornamental Chains, of which the following is a speciiieation.
My invention relates to an improvement in ornamental chains adapted for the manufacture of bracelets; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the links, as hereinafter fullyset forth and the object of my invention is to produce a chain of great comparative flexibility having a desirably finished edge.
Figure lis aface elevation of the chain. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged central section taken in the line x c of Fig. 1. Fig. ,Lis an enlarged section taken in the line z z of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the inner side of the two opposite edge-pieces enlarged. Fig. 6 is a central section of the SZLIIle.
In the accompanying drawings, A A' are the opposite vend pieces of the alternate links, made with one end rounded and the opposite end correspondingly hollowed, in order to ftthe rounded end ofthe adjoining link. The linkpiece A is provided with a-perforation, b, and an indentation,c, and the opposite link-piece, A', is provided witha perforation, c', and an indentation, b'. The end of the connectingwire B is first placed in the depression c and soldered therein, and the connecting-wire B' likewise inserted in the depression Z1 and soldered to the link-piece A'. The studa may be either pressed up on the inner side of the link-pieces A A', or be attached thereto in any suitable manner, and in forming the chain the studs a c are inserted into the opposite ends of the tube C, while the connectingwires B B pass through the tubes DD, of elongatedcross-section, and, entering the perforations b and c, respectively, are secured therein by soldering or otherwise, thus forming a chain by the continued joining of such links to each other. Thelz link-pieces A A being provided with roundedand hollowed ends, closely fitting each other, secures a desirablyfinished edge to the chain, and the chain c0nlneeted to each other by means of the parallel wires B B', substantially as described.
2. The improved ornamental-chain link, formed of the pieces A A', provided with opposite rounded and hollowed ends, and with the studs a, and connected to each other by means of the parallel wires BB', substantially as described.
3. In an ornamental chain, the combination of the end pieces, A A', provided with the opposite rounded and hollowed ends, with the connecting-wires B B',and the tubular links D, of elongated cross-section, substantially as described. 1
4. In an ornamental chain, the combination of the end pieces, A A', provided with the opposite rounded and hollowed ends, with the connecting-wires B B', the tubular links D, of elongated cross-section, and the intermediate tube, C, substantially as described.
