Bed Corporation, Los Angeles, Caiif., a corporation of Nevada H V :1 Application April 29, 1957, Serial No. 655,676 3 Claims. (Cl. -2)
- This invention relates to a combined sofa bed and end table.
It is an object of my invention to provides-combined sofa bed and end table construction which possesses certain definite advantages over similar constructions now in-use. If a sofa bed is to provide the same sleeping comfort as a conventional bed, it must necessarily--be constructed 'in the same manner. Myinvention accordingly contemplates a combined sofa bedandtend'table in which the bed includes a conventional box spring and mattress.
It is a particular object of my invention to provide such a sofa bed in combination with an end table, with the entire assembly requiring a minimum amount of space. With my invention, the space required for the entire assembly does not substantially exceed that required for the bed alone. r
' It is a further object of my invention to provide such a construction in which the bed in its night time position is provided with a headboard to retain the pillow in place and provide the same comfort and sleeping conditions as a conventional bed.
In essence, my invention contemplates achieving these results by providing an end table which overlies one end of the bed. The table has an angular closed side which extends substantially diagonally with respect to the bed when the bed is in its daytime position. A bolster may extend longitudinally from the back of the table toward the foot of the bed. The bed is pivotally mounted with respect to the front of the table, the pivot point being disposed adjacent the floor at the end of the closed angular side of the table.
When the bed is pivoted from its daytime position to its night time position, it is moved to a position in which it extends transversely to the closed angular side of the table. In such position, the bed'is moved completely out from beneath the table to permitits entire areato be used for sleeping purposes. The closed angular side of the table provides a complete headboard for the bed.
It should be noted that the closed angular side of the table thus serves a dual purpose. In the daytime position of the bed, it closes off the space between the top of the table and the top of the bed to prevent any unsightly gap between them. 'In the night time position, it provides a complete headboard for the bed. It may be further noted that the assembly provides a complete sofa bed and table in which both the bed and table are of the desired height, while the floor space required for the unit is actually less than that of a bed placed adjacent an end table. The total amount of space required is: only slightly greater than that required for the bed alone.
1 It is a further object of my invention to provide in a sofa bed structure means for holding the sofa bed in its daytime position and prevent it from rolling away from the bolster, particularly while personsaare seated upon it. My invention contemplates preventing suchwundesirable movement of the bed by utilizing .one or more rollers to move the bed and providing one or more roller receiving members which are fixedly mounted with respect to the bolster or table structure and Which are adapted to receive and prevent movement of the roller and bed while persons are seated upon the bed. At the same time, the construction provided permits easy movement of the bed when it is not occupied. I
It is accordingly an object of my invention to provide a combined sofa bed and end table having all of the advantages and benefits of the structure described above; In addition thereto, my unit isdesigned so that it may be easily and efliciently manufactured and assembled.
My invention also comprises such other objects, -ad= vantages-and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently. possessed by my'invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention, it should be understood that .thersame is susceptible 'of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my inventiont-w Referring to the drawings,. i I 1 Fig. 1 is-a perspective view of my sofa bed and end table withthe bed and bolster in their daytime positions;

Fig. 5 is a sectional-view. of the stop member assembly showing the stop member holding the roller and frame in their daytime position; 5
Fig. 6 vis a perspective vieW of the-stop member.
A preferred. embodiment which has been selected to illustrate my invention comprises a table 1% having a flat: top 11. A closed side 12 and a narrow closed front 13 extend from the top 11 toa pointadjacent the floor. A shorter angular closed side 14 extends only a short distance vertically downwardly from the top 11 A bolster assembly 15 is attached at one end to the table 10. The bolster'assembly 15 is supported by' a pair .of legs 16 and-17, which-extenddownwardly to the floor, their lower ends having L- shaped portions 18 and 19 respectively which rest upon the floor.
The bolster assembly 15 includes a storage compartment 20 which is completely enclosed except foran open front. A-back rest or bolster 21 is pivotally mounted so as to swing about a horizontal axis adjacent the top of the bolster assembly 15. This is preferably accomplished by means of an elongated piano type hinge 22 which extends along the top of the bolsterassembly 15.
When the bolster 21 is in-its lower or daytime position, as shown in Fig. lof the drawings, it closes off the open front of the storage compartment 20 and also acts as a back rest for persons seated upon the bed. When pivoted to its upper or night time position, the bolsterll rests on top of the bolster assembly 15"and exposes the open front of the storage compartment 20 so that pillows and bedding may be removed therefrom. r
A pivot means 23 is provided adjacent the intersection of the front 13 and side 14 of the table 10. ,The pivot means 23 is preferably secured to the table 10 and-also rests upon the floor. A rectangular bed frame, 24: is pivotally connected to the pivot.means.23 so that the bed frame 24.can.be pivoted about a vertical axissubstantially aligned with the front end of the side 14 of table 10. v v j ,1 I, h
The bed frame 24 includes a head member 25,,afoot member 26 and side members. 27 and28 Theframe-i t which are disposed adjacent the four corners of the frame 24, with their axes directed toward the pivot means 23. The roller 29 which is disposed adjacent the leg 16 is thus directed at an angle from the leg 16 toward the pivot means 23.
A bed Which customarily includes a spring 30 and mattress 31 is mounted on the bed frame 24. The height of the bottom of the storage compartment 20 and the bottom of the bolster 21 (when in its lowered position) is substantially the same as the height of the bottom of the closed angular side 14 of the table 10. The height of the top of the mattress 31 is slightly less in order to permit bed coverings to be placed upon the mattress and still permit the bed to be freely moved beneath the storage compartment 20 and the closed angular side 14 of the table 10.
In order to prevent the bed from undesirable movement away from the bolster 21 when the bed is in use as a sofa, I provide a stop member 32, which is preferably attached to the end of the L-shaped portion 18 of the leg 16.
The leg 16 in cross section resembles an inverted U, as shown at the top of Fig. 4. The L-shaped portion 18 accordingly has a flat center which extends parallel to the floor and which is spaced slightly thereabove. The stop member 32 has a triangular end 33 which rests upon the floor and which extends beneath the center of the L-shaped portion 18 of leg 16. A fastening member 34 extends through the L-shaped portion 18 and through the triangular end 33 of the stop member 32.
The end of the stop member 32 remote from the triangular end 33 is substantially wedge shaped to provide an upwardly inclined path 34 which leads from the floor to the outer edge 36 of a trough 35, which extends transversely across the stop member 32. The bottom of the trough 35 is arcuate in cross section, curving downwardly from its outer edge 36 at the end of the path 34 and then curving upwardly to a higher inner edge 37 at the top of the stop member 32. The stop member 32 has a small flat portion 38 at the highest point thereof which extends from the inner edge 37 of the trough 35 to the end 33. The end of the flat portion 38 remote from the inner edge 37 is cut away to provide a pair of angular ends 39 and 40 which are adapted to selectively engage the end of the L-shaped portion 18 of leg 16. The purpose of this construction is to permit the same stop member 32 to be used on beds which pivot either to the right or to the left. This is achieved by pivoting the stop member 32 with respect to the L-shaped portion 18. In the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the end 39 engages or is disposed adjacent the end of the L-shaped portion 18 and the stop member 32 is properly oriented so that the roller 29 can be received and held within the trough 35. If the stop member 32 is pivoted so that the end 40 is parallel to the end of the L-shaped portion 18, then the trough 35 will be properly oriented for a bed which pivots in the opposite direction. This positioning is used if the table is disposed at the opposite end of the bed from that shown in the drawings.
When the bed is moved from the night time position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings to the daytime position shown in Fig. 1, the roller 29 which is disposed at an angle with respect to the bed frame 24 travels toward the stop member 32. The roller 29 travels up the path 34 and drops over the outer edge 36 into the trough 35. Movement of the roller 29 substantially beyond the trough 35 is prevented by the higher inner edge 37 and also by engagement between the side member 27 of the bed frame 24 and the leg 16.
When a person is seated upon the bed, his weight exerts downward pressure tending to hold the roller 29 within the trough 35. In order for the bed frame 24 to move away from the bolster assembly 15, it is necessary for the roller 29 to move upwardly out of the trough 35.
The weight of the person seated upon the bed counter-v acts and prevents such upward movement of the roller 4 29, which is accordingly held within the trough 35 to prevent undesirable movement of the frame 24.
If no one is seated upon the bed, lateral pressure on the bed will cause the roller 29 to move upwardly and outwardly from the trough to release the bed for movement to its night time position. This is possible because only the weight of the bed itself is exerting downward pressure on the roller 29.
It is thus seen that my stop member 32 provides a simple, yet efiective method of preventing undesirable pivotal or outward movement of the bed when persons are seated upon it, while simultaneously permitting the desired free movement of the bed between its day and night time positions.
It will be noted that the bolster assembly 15 substantially overlies the bed, extending along one longitudinal edge thereof when the bed is in its daytime position. When the bed is swung to its night time position, it is moved completely out from beneath the bolster assembly 15 as well as the table 10, so that the entire area of the bed is available for sleeping purposes.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings an end table 10, it should be understood that the end member could also be a desk, dresser or any other suitable type of end member having a closed side which overlies the bed and provides a headboard when the bed is in its night time position.
I claim:

A sofa bed and end table combination which includes a bed, an end table having a vertically extending stationary closed side, said bed being pivotally mounted around one of its corners, with the pivotal axis of said bed being disposed adjacent one end of the stationary closed side of said table, said table in the daytime position of said bed substantially overlying one end of said bed with said stationary closed side extending substantially diagonally across said end of the bed, said bed being pivotable to a night time position in which said bed is completely swung out from beneath said table to permit use of the entire area of said bed for sleeping purposes, said bed in its night time position extending at substantially a right angle and closely adjacent to the stationary closed side of said table, the stationary closed side of said table forming a substantially complete headboard for said bed.
2. The structure described in claim 1, and a bolster assembly extending along and overlying one of the longitudinal edges of said bed when said bed is in its daytime position, said bed in its night time position being swung out from beneath said bolster assembly.
3.
