FRANCIS LATTIMER, OF RIOHMOND, NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF TEN TW'FNTY FOURTIIS TO JOIIN AHERN, OF SAME PLACE, AND M. II. BATES, ALEXANDER CARTER, ARTHUR SMITH, \VILLIAM F. LINTON, \VILLIADI MCGULLY, SEYMOUR E. GOUQtLEY, AND LYMAN J. \VALKER,
OF TRURO, CANADA.
KNOB ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 290,247, dated December 18, 18 3.
Application filed February 13, IP83. [Modem To a]! IH/HHIL it TIM/y concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS Lit'r'rtnnn, of Richmond, in the county of Halifax, Province of Nova Scotia, and Dominion of Canada,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knob-Spint lle Fast on i 1151s for Mortise-Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying [0 drawing, forming, a part of this specification,
and which is a sectional elevation of my llllprovement.
The object of this invention is to tacilitatc the adjustment of knobs to doors of different thicknesses.
The invention consists in the combination, with the knob and its shank, of an interior bolt having an exterior screwtlireznl and a spindlc-reeeiving socket at its projecting end,
andtheextension-shank havinginteriorscrewthread and a spindle receiving aperture, whereby the said knob can be readily adjusted to the thickness of the door, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a door, in which is formed a mortise, B, to receive a lock.
0 is the knob, the inner end of the shank I) of which tits into a deep rabbet, E, formed in the face of the rose 1*. The shank I) re- -O eeives the bolt 2, upon which it and the knob are molded or east, or to which the said shank is secured by rivets or other suitable means.
The bolt G has a screw-thread, II, formed upon the outer surface of its end, which pro- 5 jet-ts beyond the end of the shank I), and has a square socket, I, formed in it to receive the end of the spindle J, which passes through the door A and the lock. The inner surface of the shank I) has a rabbct, K, formed in it,
0 to tit upon the outer end of the extension shank L, which has aeorresponding rabbet, M,
formed in its outer surface.
The extension-shank L has a countersink, N, formed in its outer end, toreceive theend of the bolt G, and has a screw-thread, O, formed in the surface of the said countersink, to receive and tit upon the screw-thread II of the bolt G.
The extension-shank- L has a square hole,
1, formed through its center in line with the center of the countersink N, to correspond with the socket I of the bolt G, so that the spindle J will pass through the hole P and enter the socket I, and will lock the said bolt G and extension-shank L together and prevent them from turning upon each other after the said spindle .I has been inserted.
Around the inner end of the extension shank L is formed an annular groove, Q, to receive the open slotted plate I, which is inserted at the side of the lock in a recess in the door A, at the side of the mortise B, to lock the knob O in place upon the spindle J.
In fitting the knobs to doors the extensionshanks L are inserted in place, and the bolts G of the knobs O are screwed into the said extensiou-sluuiks L to such a depth as the thickness of the door A may render necessary. The knobs O and extensionshanks are then removed, the spindle J is passed through the door and lock, the knobs U and extensionshanks L are placed upon the ends of the spindle J and returned to their places, and the lockiugplate It is inserted in its place, making all secure.
\Vith this construction no washers need be 7 5 used between the knob-shank I) and the rose 1* in adjusting the knobs O to the thickness of doors.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the knob Oand shank D, of the bolt G, having exterior screw-thread,
II, and spindlercceiving socket I, the extension-shank L, having interior screw-thread, O, and spindle-receiving aperture 1, and means for securing); the extension-shank to the door, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the knobs can be readily adjusted to doors of dill'erent thicknesses, as set forth.
FRANCIS LATTIMER.
