PIANO-PEDAL STOOL.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,163, dated December l1, 1883.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM WINTER, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State oi' N ew York, have invented a new and Improved Piano-Pedal Stool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new an d improved stool adapted to be held on the pedal-frames of pianos, organs, 85e., to enable children and small persons to operate the pedals.
rllhe invention consists in a stool provided with foot-levers connected by connecting-rods and elbow -levers pivoted on a bar of the stool and adapted to operate the pedal-levers of a piano or like instrument, which stool is provided with devices for easily and rapidly attaching it to the instrument or pedal-lyre of the same. rlhe angle-levers are provided with pads, to protect the pedal-levers from being defaced or injured.
The invention also consists in various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a longitudinal rear elevation of my improved piano-pedal stool, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of thc same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the pedal-levers of the same.
The top plate, A, ofthe stool rests upon four legs, B, the rear pair of which are united by a longitudinally-slotted bar, O. On the said bar O two L-sh'aped pieces, D, are held by screws I, passed through vertical slots D in the vertical shanks of the pieces D, and through the slot of the bar O, thus permitting of a vertical adjustment ot the pieces D. The longitudinal Shanks ofthe pieces D project outward, and are provided at the outer ends with upwardly-projecting prongs c. One or more foot-levers, E, are pivoted in laterally-adjustable standards E on the top-plate, A, at the rear edge. To about the middle ofthe under side of each lever E a connecting-rod, F, is pivoted which is provided in its lower end with a series of apertures, b. To the lower end of each connecting-rod F the upper end of a l curved elbow-lever, G, is pivoted by a pintle passing through one of the apertures b and through apertures in the 'forked upper ends oi' the elbow-levers. rlhe said elbow-levers a c each pivoted at the bend to a plate, H, provided with a vertical slot, and held in the bar O by a screw, H, passing through the slot of the said plate and through the slot in the bar C. The plates H can thus be adjusted higher or lower, as may be necessary, and the rods F can be adjusted on the levers G. To each elbow-lever G a spring, J, is fastened, which is also fastened to the top plate, A. and draws the upper end ofthe lever upward. The bottom shanks of the elbow-levers G project inwardly and are each slotted longitudinally. A pad, K, is held adjustably on the under side of the bottom arm of each elbow-lever by a screw, K', passing through the sict of the lever and provided with a nut.
The operation is as follows: The L-shaped pieces D are so adjusted that when the stool is placed in front ofthe pedal-lyre L the prongs A will pass into the bottom of the lyre. The rods F, the plates, and pads K are so adjusted that the pads rest on the outer ends of the pedal-levers M ofthe lyre L. It" alever, E, is depressed, the corresponding elbow-lever G will be depressed, and will depress the corresponding pedal-lever, M, the pad K protecting the latter from being defaced. lf more than one pedal-lever, M, is pivoted on the lyre, the plates H must be adjusted accordingly laterally in the bar O, the rods F andthe standards E passing through slots in the top plate, A, to permit of such adjustment. Ii children or small persons wish to perform on the instrument, the stool is hooked under the pedal of the instrument or its pedal-lyre by means of the pronged pieces D, and the stool will then be ready for use. The stool can be fast ened on the pedal-lyre very easily and rapidly without the use of screws or like devices, and the stool can easily be adjusted according to the size of the person.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A piano-pedal stool having a horizontallyslotted longitudinal bar, in combination with vertically slotted angle plates adj ustably bound thereon by means of bolts passing IOO through both of said slots, the horizontal portion of said plates having upwardly-projecting spurs to engage the under side of the pia-no, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a stool, of foot-levers pivoted on the same, connecting-rods pivoted to the foot-levers, and vertically-adjustable angle-levers pivoted on a cross-bar of the stool, which angle-levers are adapted to ope`rate the pedal-levers of the instrument, and are pivoted to the connecting-rods, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a stool, of footlevers pivoted on thc saine, connecting-rods pivoted to the said foot-levers, and vertically and laterally adjustable elbow-levers pivoted on a cross-bar of the stool, which elbow-levers are adapted to operate the pedal-levers of the instrument, and are pivoted to the connect ing-rods, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose ,set forth.
4. The combination, with a stool, of the laterally-adjustable foot-levers E, the connecting-rods F, and the laterally-adjustable elbowlevers G, adapted to operate the pedal-levers ofthe instrument, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with a stool provided with a slotted bar, G, of the connecting-rods 3o F and the elbow-levers G, pivoted to the vertically-slotted plates H, held on the slotted bar C, substantially as herein shown and de scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
6. A stool, foot-levers journaled to oscillate 35 vertically on top thereof, and a connecting-rod hung to each of said levers, having two or more pin-holes in its lower end. in combination with angle-levers journaled in the lower portion of said stool, each angle-lever provided 4o with a pin adapted to engage either of thev Vholes in the lower end of said rod, and a pad longitudinally adjustable in the lower arm of said angle-lever, as' described, whereby said pad may be set fore and aft to meet the crowns 45 of different pedals, and whereby the lever may be adjusted to engage pedals of different heights.
