14 Claims. (Cl. 268-126) This invention relates to operating means for window regulator mechanisms and more particularly to operating means for vehicle window regulator mechanisms.
The operating means of lthis invention is of the type which is selectively operable from the exterior of the vehicle to move la vehicle window between open and closed positions and which may also be selectively and alternately placed in locked inoperative or unlocked inoperative conditions. Such an operating means is vparticularly useful for 4station Wagon tail gate windows wherein it is desirable that an exterior operating means be provided to selectively move the window between open and closed positions and that this operating means be able to be placed in a locked inoperative condition to prevent unauthorized entry into the vehicle.
Generally, the operating means includes an operating member rotatably mounted on the body, a manually operable handle swingably mounted on the member for movement between an open operating and a closed nonoperating position with respect to a handle receiving housing therein which opens to a handle receiving recess `011 the body, each of which receive portions of the handle in the closed position thereof. The operating member supports a key cylinder assembly movable between locked and unlocked positions with respect thereto and controlling operations of a clutch means to selectively and alternately clutch and declutch the operating member from the window regulator mechanism. When the key cylinder assembly is locked to the operating, member, the operating member is declutched from the window regulator mechanism whereby even if the handle is moved to an open position and the operating member rotated, the window will remain in closed position. When the key cylinder assembly is unlocked from the operating member it is manually movable to first and second positions with respect thereto, the first position acting to clutch the operating member to the window regulator mechanism whereby rotation of the handle moves the window between open and closed positions, and the second position acting to declutch the operating member from the window regulator mechanism in order that the handle receiving recess of the operating member may be aligned with the handle receiving recess on the body so that the handle may be moved to a closed position. Thus, when the key cylinder assembly is in an unlocked position, the operator may move the window to any position at his will. However, if the key cylinder assembly Vis Vin locked position, the window Vcannot be moved.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved operating means for vehicle window regulator mechanisms. Another object of this invention is to provide an improved operating means for vehicle window regulator mechanisms wherein the operating means is selectively operable from the exterior of the body to move the window between open and closed positions and may also be placed in a locked inoperative position to prevent unauthorized entry into the body. A further object of this invention is to provide an improved manual ICC lator mechanism.
These and other objects of this invention will vbe y readily apparent from the following specification and drawings, wherein: l i
Figure 1 is a partial rear elevational viewvof a ,station wagon body embodying an operating means according to this invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged partially broken away elevar tional view of the operating means, with the manually operable handle being shown in open position;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken along Vthe plane indicated generally by line 3-3 of Figure 1, with the manually operable handle being shown in closed position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the plane indicated generally by line 4-4 of .Figure 3,;
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view vtaken along the plane indicated generally by line 5--5 of Figure 3,; and,
Figure 6 vis an enlarged Vsectional view taken along the plane indicated generally by line 6-6 of Figure 3.
Referring now particularly to Figure l of the drawings, a station wagon body 10 includes a tail gate v12 which is swingably mounted on the body at its lower edge 14 Ator movement between a closed position, as shown, and an open position wherein the tail gate is disposed in a generally horizontal position. The tail gate 12 supports a window 16 which is movable b6- tween a closed position, as shown, and an open -position within the tail gate, not shown. When the window 16 is in closed position, the upper and side edge portions thereof are received within a guide channel 18 of the body. Thus, the window 16 must be in an open position within the tail gate before the tail gate ycan be opened.
The window 16 is moved between open and closed positions by a window regulator mechanism which generally includes a pair o'f lift arms 20 and 22 pivotally mounted on the tail gate 12 at 24 and mounting rollers 26 which are pivotally and slidably received in vcam channels 28 xed to the lower edge of the window. The lit-t arms include intermeshing sector gears 30, with the sector gear of lift arm 22 being driven by a pinion 32.
It is desirable that the window regulator mechanism be operable from the exterior of the body by an operating means and that this operating means `be able to be locked or placed jin an operative ,condition to prevent unauthorized `entry into the 'body `10. This invention provides such a window regulator operating means 34 which may `be operated from the exterior of the body and 'which includes me-ans Vfor selectively and alternately placing the operating means in operative or inoperative conditions. This operating means will now be Vdescribed with reference to Figures 2 through 6 of the drawings.
As best shown in Figure '3 of the drawings, a circularly 4shaped housing 4t) ts flush within a localized embossment in the tailgate outer panel 42 and includes a central hub portion 44 whichts within an opening 46 of panel 42. Housing 40 is bolted at 43 to panel 42. A handle assembly 48 is rotatably supported by yhousing -40 and includes a generally circularly shaped handled support or operating member 50 and a manually operable handle 52 swingably secured thereto. The handle support 50 seats against the outer end of lhub 44 and includes a central hub 53 rotatably received within hub 44 and against axial outward .movement thereof by means ofz 3 split ring 54 which is received within a `groove 56 of hub 53 and bears against a washer 58 located between the split ring and theinner end of hub 44. Bearing shoes '59,.'are further provided on support 50 to bear against ,housing 40andpthereby stabilize the support 50 agalnst Vtilting movement. Thehandle 52 includes a mountlng 'lug 60 at one end thereof received Within a radial groove 62 oifisupport 50. VYA pin 64 extends through lug 60 and 'the ends of the pin are received within opposite slots 66 provided in support 50 which open to the inner side there- 'ofvand also to. groove 62. The ends of the pin 64 are held 'against the outer ends of the slots 66 by means of angle` y b rackets 68 having one leg thereof bolted at 70 to the rear wall of support 50 and the other leg thereof bearing against the ends of the pin to hold these ends in engagement with the outer ends of the slots. The body of 'handle l52 is of generally circular shape so as tobe rey ceived within a similar shaped recess 71 in support 50 a similarly shaped recess 78 of housing 40 which extends inwardly within the opening 46 of panel 42. The handle f52 is secured in place in closed position by a generally V VIJ-shaped. spring 80 riveted at 82 to the base of recess 78 having reversely bent legs 84, Figure 2, which engage behind a rib 86 of knob 72.
A lock cylinder housing 88 is received within the hub lock cylinder 94,' Figures 3 and 5, is received within housing 88and is of conventional side locking bar type having VY53 of support 50 .and is keyed to the support for rotation therewith by means of an axial rib 90 of housing 88 `being received within an axial groove 92 in hub 53. A
a side locking bar 96 which is spring biased inwardly of ithe lock cylinder so as to be retracted therein when the inner beveled edge of the bar is aligned with the tumbler notches 97, upon insertion of a suitable key 98 within the key slot 99 to move the tumblers 100 to a non-blocking position. As can be seen in Figure 5 of the drawings, the locking bar 96 is adapted to t within either of a pairV of longitudinal slots 101 and 102 provided in housing 88, with slot 101 being of circumferential width substantially equal to the width of the side locking bar to prevent rotational movement of the lock cylinder relative to housing 88 when the bar is within this slot, while slot 102 is of a substantial circumferential Width as compared to the width of the side locking bar so that the lock cylinder 94 may be rotated through a substantial this slot. The lock cylinder 94 is keyed to the housing "88 for rotation relative thereto by means of a pin 103 which fits within grooves provided in the lock cylinder housing, 88 and the lock cylinder 94. Thus the lock Ycylinder is held against movement outwardly of the housing 88.y
1 The lock cylinder 94 includes a lug 104 which is eccentrically located with respect to the axis of rotation thereof and is received within a slot 106 of locking pawl 108. Pawl 108 is slidably mounted within a bore 110 o-f housing 88, the opening of which is adapted to be aligned with a slot 112 provided in the hub 53 of support 50. The pawl is continually urged outward of bore 110 by means of a coil compression spring 114 whichis received within a bore 116 of the pawl and seats on a lug 118 of housing 88.
A driving hub 120 is rotatably mounted on the inner end of hub 53 and is rotatably secured thereto by means of a split ring 122 which is received Within a groove provided in an axial lug 124 of housing 88 which projects through the base of hub 120. A washer 126 is provided between the split ring and the base of hub 120. The hub 120 further includes an axial slot 128 which V is -arc relative to housing 88 when the locking bar is within adapted to be aligned with bore and slot 112, and a pair of diametrically opposite axial slots 130 which slidably receive a shaft 132. Shaft 132 is rotatably mounted at 134 between the legs 136 of a yoke 138. Yoke 138 is secured to a shaft which also includes the pinion gear 32 meshing with the sector gear 30 of arm 22, as previously described in conjunction with Figure 1 of the drawings.
A manually operable handle 142, Figures 2 and 6, is secured to the lock cylinder 94 in a suitable manner, such as by staking. A leaf spring 144 is received within the recess 145 therein. The leai:` spring 144 is Welded at 147 to handle 142 and includes a V-shaped detent portion 146 which is adapted to t within any one of three V- shaped notches 148, 150 and 152 provided in a circumferential flange 154 of housing 88. As can be seen from Figure 2 of the drawings, the handle 142 includes a pointer and operating knob 156 which is movable relative to the support 50 with respect to the Words lock,
fold and open marked thereon, with the lock position of handle 142 corresponding to engagement of detent 146 with notch 148, the fold position of handle 142 Vcorresponding to the engagement of detent 146 with notch 1,50, and the open position of handle 142 corresponding to the engagement of detent 146 with notch 152.
The operating means of this invention is shown in the drawings with the handle 142 in lock position wherein the detent 146 of spring 144 engages notch 148; with the lock cylinder 94 in a locked position with respect to housing 88 wherein the side bar 96 engages within slot 101 of housing 88; and with the lug 104 of the lock cylinder 94 engaging the lower wall of slot 106 to hold pawl 108 within slot 110 and out of slots 112 and 128. Assuming now that an unauthorized person inserts his fingers within the linger grip opening 158 of handle 52 and then moves the handle to an open operating position as shown in full lines in Figure 2 and dot-dash lines in Figure 3. If the person now turns the handle 52 to rotate the support 50, the lock cylinder housing 88 and the lock cylinder 94 will turn with the support 50 independently of hub 120, since the pawl 108 does not engage in slot 128. Thus. the unauthorized person can turn the handle 52 at will, but the window 16 remains in a closed position, as shown in Figure l, since there is no driving connection between the pawl 108 and the slot 128 of hub 120.
Assuming now that an authorized person inserts the suitable key 98 within the key slot 99 to move the turnblers 100 to a non-blocking position and allow the locking bar 96 to be spring biased inwardly of the lock cylinder 94 into engagement with the tumbler notches 97 and out of engagement with the slot 101. Thereafter, handle 142 is manually turned so that detent 146 engages notch 152, or the key is turned to so move the handle through its fold position to its open position. This will rotate the lock cylinder 94 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Figure 4, so that the lug 104 of the lock cylinder will move to its position 104" to allow spring 114 to move pawl 108 outwardly Vof slot 110 to its position 108" within slots 112 and 128. The key 98 can now be removed so that the tumblers 100 will move the locking bar 96 outwardly of the lock cylinder 94 and into the slot 102. If the handle 52 is now turned to rotate the support 50 and the lock cylinder housing 88, the engagement of the detent 146 of spring 144 with notch 152 of housing 88 will cause the lock cylinder 94 to also rotate with housing 88. Since Vthe pawl 108 now lits within slots 112 and 128, turning of handle 52 will cause the hub 120 to rotate with support 50 and the engagement of the slots 130 of the hub with the pin 132 will rotate the shaft 140 and the pinion 32 to thereby swing the lift arms 20 and 22 outwardly of each other and move the window 16 to an open position Within the tailgate 12.
If it is thereafter desired to niove the window 16 to a closed position or any other open position, the handle 52 is turned in the opposite direction to rotate the hub wardly ofeach other.
It will be remembered that the knob 72 is received within the recess 78 of housing 40 when the handle 52 is in closed position, and that the housing 40 is iixed to vrthe body. Since the window may be moved to various positions, the opening 76 may not be aligned with the 'recess 78 when it is desired to move the handle 52 to a closed position. When this occurs, the operator grasps the handle 142 and moves the handle to its fold position, thereby moving the detent 146 of spring 144 out of engagement with notch 152 and into engagement with notch 150 and also rotating the lock cylinder 94 relative to housing 88, as side bar 96 moves within slot 102, to a position wherein the lug 104 is in position 104', Figure 4, to move pawl108 to its position 108 out of engagement with slots 112 and 128. Since the pawl 108 is no longer in engagement with slot 128, the support 50, the lock cylinder housing 88 and the lock cylinder 94 can again be rotated independently of the hub 120 by handle 52 until the opening 76 is aligned with the recess 78 so that the handle 52 can then be moved to a closed position, as shown in Figure l, wherein the knob 72 is received within the recess 7S in engagement with the legs 84 of spring 82.
If the operator thereafter desires to move the window to some other position, he merely mo'ves the Yhandle 52 to its open operating position, as shown Vin Figure 2; moves the handle 142 from fold to open position to rotate the lock cylinder 94 relative to housing 88 and move the lug 104 to its position 104 and allow pawl 108 Vto move to its position 108" in engagement with slots `112 and 128; and then turns the handle 52.
Assume now that the window 16 has vbeen moved to the desired position, the opening 76 is aligned with recess 78, and that the operator desires to place the operating means in a locked or inoperative position. The operator inserts the key 98 within the key slot 99 to retract the side bar 96, as previously described, out of Slot 102 and thereafter moves the handle 142 from either fold or open position to lock position. This will move the side'bar 96 into alignment with slot 101 of housing 88, and if the key is thereafter retracted, the tumblers '100 move the side bar 96 into engagement with the slot 101.
VThus the operating means is now in a lockedor inopera- ,tive position and the handle 52 is then moved to a closed position.
Thus this invention vprovides a new and 'improved operating means ,for a vehicle window regulator mechanism which is selectively operable from the exterior of the vehicle Vto move a vehicle window between open and closed positions and which maybe selectively and altervnately placed in a locked inoperative condition wherein the operating means'will not operate the window regulator mechanism to thereby prevent unauthorized entry into the vehicle.
