SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,844, dated December 11, 1883.

T 0 all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. KLINK- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Hand-Stamp, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hand-stamps; and the objects of my improve ments are, first, to provide a hand-stamp of simple and durable construction, compact in form, being adapted to be carried in thepocket, and cleanly in its operation; second, to provide a self-inking handstamp,in which the action of withdrawing the stamp or type-block from its containing pad-holding tray will cause the surface of the type to be charged with ink; third, to provide a hand-stamp in which the lids or cover, which retain the typeblock within its pad-containing tray, 'serve as a knob, or handle, by which the said type-block may be withdrawn, for the purpose of making an impression. These results I accomplish by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved hand-stamp when in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, showing the lids raised up and the stamp ready for removal. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section through the stamp and pad-tray.

Similar letters of reference are used to designate like parts throughout the several views.

A represents the pad-tray, made, preferably, of sheet metal and rectangular in form. Upon the bottom of this tray 1 place the ink-pad B, which is charged with a sufficient quantity of ink. The block of rubber type C is firmly attached to the metal plate D, which fits snugly, yet without binding, within the pad tray. Transversely across the top of the plate D, I braze or otherwise secure, by the outer ends, the spring-plate E, to which the two lids F F are hinged by the hinges G G, as shown. The

outer edges of these lids are swaged down, so as to fit over the top edges of the pad-tray and make a close finish and tight joint, preventing the entrance of particles of dust or other foreign matter to the interior of the box. WVhen not in use, or while being carried in the pocket, the lids will occupy the position shown in Fig. 1; but when it becomes necessary to take an impression,the forefinger of the operator is pressed down upon the top of the plate E, which action will slightly depress the center of the said plate and cause the lids F F to releasev their hold upon the edges of the padtray, and, flying upward,will assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The action of pressing down upon the plate E will also press the typeblock into contact with the inking-pad, and a fresh supply of ink will be given to the typefaces. Should the forefinger be allowed to remain in contact with the transverse plate, the outer ends of the lids will strike and rest against it, when the lids may then be grasped by the thumb and middle finger, and the typeblock be lifted from the tray, and an impression taken. When the type-block is returned to the pad-tray, the two covering-lids F-F are forced down over the top edges of the tray,

and this action will cause a slight springing up or raising of the plate D, lifting the face of the type clear of the ink-pad, as shown in Fig. 3, and prevent the gumming up of the type by a superfluous amount of ink adhering to them.

I am thus enabled to obtain a neat-appearing, cleanly, and effectivelyoperating handstamp, arranged within a small compass, and adapted to be easily carried within the vestpocket, ready for immediate use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a hand-stamp, the type-block C, plate D, transverse spring-plate E, and spring-lids F F, in combination with a pad-containing tray or box, A, substantially as shown and set forth, for the purpose specified.
