2 Claims. (Cl. 292-342) This invention relates to a door stop device, and more particularly to a wedged resilient door stop means to facilitate wedging of a door in a desired stop position.
A door stop device is useful in maintaining doors in an open or partially open position, either for ingress and egress through the door or to allow circulation of air through the opened doorway.
The door stop should be one that is conveniently located and adaptable for ease in operation, and when engaged with the door should be capable of holding the door in the desired position and yet be constructed so that it can be easily removed to allow closing of the door.
The object of my invention is to provide a resilient wedged door stop device mounted on a door for maintaining a door in a desired open position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a resilient wedge for positive securement of the door in the desired open or partially open position.
A particular object of my invention is to provide a door stop easily engageable. between the bottom portion of the door and the floor surface, and easily removable from the door stop position.
My preferred embodiment is hereinafter described in conjunction with the drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the door stop secured to the lower door portion;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the door stop of Fig. 1 shown positioned from the door;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the door stop of Fig. 1 shown in position between the bottom of the door and the floor;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the securing portion of the door stop linkage and spring arrangement; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to Fig. 1 a bracket is shown secured to lower door portion 11 by fastener devices 12. A link 13 is pivotally attached to bracket 11 at pin 14. A spring member 15 (as shown in Fig. 4) is operable to maintain link 13 in a relatively vertical position (as viewed in Fig. 1) with respect to the door portion 11.
A link 16 is loosely pivotally attached to one end of link 13 as at pin 17. A resilient door stop 'wedge member 18 is loosely pivotally attached to link 16 as at pin 19.
The door stop member and linkage is positioned on the door portion 11 in such a manner that the door may be swung freely without interference from the door stop member 18.
In Fig. 2 the door stop wedge member 18 is shown as it is positioned away from the door portion 11 as by foot or hand actuation.
In Fig. 3 the wedge member 18 is positioned under door portion 11. It will be noted that an opening 20 is provided through resilient wedge member 18. Such opening 20 aids in allowing wedge member 18 to be positioned between the door and the floor. It can be seen in Fig. 3 that opening 20 is reduced by the action of the door against wedge member 18, and provides a relatively flattened portion on wedge member 18 where the wedge member is contacted by the bottom of the door.
Also provided on member 18 are gripping serrations 21 which aid in restraining movement of the wedge member when the door acts against it.
Thus, I have shown and described a door stop device which may be readily placed between the bottom of a door and the floor, and obtain maximum seourement of the wedge member by providing an aperture in said member for facilitating insertion of the wedge member, and yet maintain the door in the desired position. The wedge member 18 may be constructed of rubber, or of rubber substitutes having the necessary resiliency.
To remove the wedge member 18, it is necessary only to move the wedge member 18 out from under the door by a simple pulling action, and the spring 15 acting on link 13 will cause the door stop device to move to the position shown in Fig. l, where it is readily'available for actuation.
Having described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I intend to be limited only by the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An automatically retracted doorstop comprising, an elongated resilient tapered Wedge member including a lower surface adapted to lie on a floor and a sloping upper surface adapted to engage the bottom edge of a door, a bracket securing said doorstop to the side of a door, a first link member pivotally secured at its outer end to the rearward portion of said wedge member near the margin of said upper surface, a second link member pivotally mounted on the opposite end of said first member and having its inner end pivotally mounted in said bracket, and spring means cooperating with said bracket and said second link member and normally biasing said second link member in its retracted position against the side of the door, said wedge member being adapted to be disposed under the edge of a door for preventing the closing of the door, said linkage and wedge member being positioned and arranged in such manner that upon removing said wedge means from its Wedging position under a door, said linkage automatically lifts up said wedge member and disposes it in retracted position along the side of the door with the narrow forward edge portion of the wedge member disposed downwardly and the upper wedge surface disposed along the side of the door, whereby said wedge member is maintained in its re tracted position in an advantageous location along the side of the door from which it can be readily moved to a door-stopping position under the edge of the door.
2. An automatically retracted doorstop comprising, an elongated resilient tapered wedge member including a lower surface adapted to lie on a floor and provided with gripping serrations and a transverse aperture for facilitating the gripping action, and a sloping upper surface aadpted to engage the bottom edge of a door, a bracket securing said doorstop to the side of a door, a first link member pivotally secured at its outer end to the rearward portion of said Wedge member near the margin of said upper surface, a second link member pivotally mounted on the opposite end of said first member and having its inner end pivotally mounted in said bracket, said link members being formed of relatively thin flat material, and spring means mounted around a pivot pin connecting said bracket and second link member and normally biasing said second link member in its retracted position against a side of the door, said wedge member being adapted to be disposed under the edge of a door, said linkage and wedge member being positioned and arranged in such manner that upon removal of said wedge means from its wedging position under a door, either by further opening the door or by moving said 'wedge means away from its door-stopping position, said linkage automatically retracts said wedge member and disposes it along the side of the door with the narrow forward edge portion of the wedge member disposed downwardly near the floor and the upper wedge surface disposed along the side of the door for the purposes described.
