To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, O r'ro FRANCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorstops, of I which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to door stops, that is, to devices for holding a door in open position; and the present'application is a continuation of my application Serial No.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple device that may be readily attached to a floor in the path of the outer or free edge of the door and which, when contacted by said door, will automatically operate to lock the door in open position. A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned, which may be readily operated by the foot or otherwise, to release the door. A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will beadapted for use in conjunction with either right or left hand doors, that is, with doors hinged at either the right or left side thereof. A further object of'my invention is to provide means for maintaining the device in operative position. Further objects of my invention are to provide a device as mentioned which shall be of simple construction, and which maybe readily applied by practically any one without requiring the services of a mechanic. Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists generally in an arm or lever adapted to be pivotally mounted at one end thereof-to the floor adjacent the path of the outer edge of a door, and provided with lateral projections adapted to embrace the edge of the door between them, one of said projections being arranged adjacent the pivot and 5 adapted to be contacted by the door to move the arm or lever into operative position.

My invention further consists in a device as mentioned further characterized by a longitudinally extending projection or lug 30 forming a toe-piece by means of which the device may be moved to release the door.

' vention further consists in various details of construct-ion and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which- Fig. l is a plan view of a door stop cmbodying myinventiom'a portion of a cooperating door being illustrated in conjunction therewith.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates an arm adapted to be pivotally connectedto the floor at one end, as by a screw 2. The pivot end comprises a substantially vertical portion 3 which projects upwardly from the floor a considerable distance for a purpose hereinafter described. Preferably the major part of the portion 3 is cut away as indicated at 4 to reduce the thickness for the reception of the screw 2, thereby lessening the quantity of metal required and also considerably lessening the boring or drilling of the aperture 5 for the screw 2.

The arm 1 extends outwardly from the upper portion of the part 3 and curves downwardly, as at 6, at its outer end, terminating in lateral extending lugs 7 upon the ends of which are depending feet 8. Projecting laterally from the upper end of the portion 3 are lugs 9 between which and the lug 7, the edges of the door 10 is adapted to be held. The lugs 9 constitute stops for the door when opening, and also when engaged by the door, causes the arm 1 and lugs 7 to swing into operative position to secure the door. By having the portion 3 of considerable height and arranging the lugs 9 at the upper end thereof, the door will be sure to engage the same even though it swings at quite a distance above the floor. It is obvious that the stop maybe of any preferred form. The lugs 13 are spaced apart a proper distance to permit sufficient swinging of the device but to maintain the same at all times in operative position, that is, in a position where the lug 9 will be engaged by the door. It will be noted that the device is identical at both sides so that the device may be adapted for use in conjunction with doors that are hinged either upon the right or left side. The operation of the device is obvious.

I claim: l. A door: stop comprising a vertical portion, an arm extending outwardly and downwardly from the upper portion thereof, lateral projecting lugs adjacent the ends of said arm, and means adjacent said vertical portion for pivotally connecting the device to a floor, substantially as described.

2. A door stop comprising an arm and means at one end of the arm for pivotally connecting the same to floor, and integral projecting lugs on said arm adapted to embrace the edge of the door, said lugs projecting laterally from both sides of said arm as and for the purpose specified.

3. A device as set forth in claim 1 further characterized by a longitudinal extending toe-piece, substantially as described.

4. A device asset forth in claim 1 further characterized by a longitudinal extending toepiece and a shield on said arm adjacent said toe-piece, substantially as described.

5. A door stop comprising a vertical portion, an arm extending outwardly and downwardly from the upper end thereof, lateral extending lugs at the lower end of the said arm, the ends of the said lugs terminating in downwardly extendingfeet, and laterally extending lugs on said vertical portion and means adjacent said vertical portion for pivotally connecting the device to a floor, substantially as described.
