UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE/ CHARLES W. TILLETT, OF FAIRVIEI/V,` OHIO.
- Y FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION farming part'of 'Letters Patent No. 289,730, dated December 4, 1883.
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, GHARLEs W. TILLETT, of Fairview, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the Vart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specithe side plates of the device, which are rnlly` united by bolts B, inserted lthrough connecting-pieces C. In practice I lprefer to construct these parts of iron or other suitable metal, to obtain the greatest possible strength' with a minimum of,V bulk, so that the device can readily be carried in a trunk or satchel. rIhe upper parts of the side plates, A A, are recessed, as shown at a, to form bearings or boxes for friction-rollers D, E, F, G, .and II, which have a limitedplay in their boxes a, in the side plates, and are arranged in juxtaposition to one another, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Y
Iis ashaft or drum, which isinserted through bearings i in the enlarged part of the casing composed of the side plates, A, and is provided at its projecting opposite ends with cranks K for turning it. Upon this drum is wound a belt, L, the free kendof which is passed between the friction-rollers D E F G H, as shown in the drawings, and is provided with a ring or hook, M, by means of which the free end of the belt may be fastened to the window from which the descent is to be made, or to a suit- Applicat'ion led March 20, 1883. (No model.)
In orderI to regulate the speed at which they belt is wound off the drum in using the device,
I provide a brake vmechanism consisting of a fixed jaw, I), and a movable jaw, Q,which are arranged at f opposite sides of the casing, and also on the opposite projecting ends of shaft I. rlhe swell or eccentric r of the turn-button R, which'is pivoted upon a stud or screw, s, projects into a'recess, t,'in the upper part, of the movable brake-jaw Q, so that by turning this button said jaw may be adjusted to bear with greater or lesser force against the free ends of shaft I 'on opposite sides of its casing. As the free ends'of the turn-buttons R can readily be reached and manipulated by the person using the escape, he can at all times regulate the speed of his descent by the escape. rIhis he can also do, if he so desires, by means of the cranks K, which are used for Winding up the belt into the device when not in use.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to' secure by Letters Patent ofthe G, and II,boxed in said recesses, shaft or drum I, having cranks K K, belt L, having a ring,
M, or equivalent means for attachment at its free end, a crossfbar', N, adapted to suppofb`v a strap, O, and a brake mechanism composed of a iixed jaw, P, and a movable jaw, Q, having recesses t and turn-'buttons R, the whole constructed and combined to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. TILLETI.
