SPECIFICATION farming part'of 'Letters Patent No. 289,730, dated December 4, 1883.
To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, GHARLEs W. TILLETT, of Fairview, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the Vart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specithe side plates of the device, which are rnlly` united by bolts B, inserted lthrough connecting-pieces C. In practice I lprefer to construct these parts of iron or other suitable metal, to obtain the greatest possible strength' with a minimum of,V bulk, so that the device can readily be carried in a trunk or satchel. rIhe upper parts of the side plates, A A, are recessed, as shown at a, to form bearings or boxes for friction-rollers D, E, F, G, .and II, which have a limitedplay in their boxes a, in the side plates, and are arranged in juxtaposition to one another, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. As the free ends'of the turn-buttons R can readily be reached and manipulated by the person using the escape, he can at all times regulate the speed of his descent by the escape. rIhis he can also do, if he so desires, by means of the cranks K, which are used for Winding up the belt into the device when not in use.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim and desire to' secure by Letters Patent ofthe G, and II,boxed in said recesses, shaft or drum I, having cranks K K, belt L, having a ring,
