UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ALFRED S. PHILBROOK, 0F OLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FlRE-ESCAPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,161. dated September 11, 1877; application filed November 23, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALFRED S.PHIL13RooK, of Glaremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improvel Fire-Escape, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention is designed to furnish, in a light and portable form, the means of descending with ease and safety from the upper stories of buildings in time of fire.
A, Figure l, is the hook by which the apparatus is attached to the building. 0 is the rope, which should be of sufficient length to reach to the ground. D D D are knobs of wood, or other suitable material, placed at convenient distances along the rope O, and held in place by knots F F F. Two stirrup sockets, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, tit onto the knobs D D D. These sockets have a stirrup attached to them by a line of suit.- able length, and also have an opening on one side, which admits of their being taken from one knob and placed upon another.
In using these a person descending would place a foot in each stirrup, resting his weight on one, while, with his hands, he detached the other socket and placed it upon a lower knob, and so on.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the hook A, the lever B, the rope O, the knobs D l) l), and the socket and stirrup, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. The combination of the stirrup and socket, constructed and operating substantially as described.
ALFRED S. PHILBROOK.
