Description

(N0 MddeL) I A. WARD.
' CLIMBING DEVICE.
No. 265,195. I Patented Sept. 26, 1882 WITNESSES 7 INVENTORE,
- view of the same,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY WARD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLIMBING DEV-ICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,195, dated September 26, 1882.
Application filed March 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY WARD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (llimbingDevices, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure Lis a perspective view of a foot attachment for climbing chains. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line at m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to climbingdevices; and it consists in the peculiar construction of parts, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, 0 is a rod which has a stirrup or foot-rest, P, attached to its lower end, and is designed to be secured to the leg of the wearer by straps Q.
To the rod 0 are attached a series of hooks, It, turned alternately in opposite directions, and through which a chain extending from the ground to the top of a house is designed to pass, so that the rod 0 will not be liable to become accidentally detached. Upon the inner end of the foot-rest P is formed a hook, S,
[to he hooked around the chain.
To the inner end of the foot-restP is hinged a spur, T, the upward movement of which is limited by its outer end striking against the 5 lower side of the hook S. The outer end of the spur T is so formed that it will readily pass through a link of the chain, and its downward movement is limited by its inner end striking against the inner end of the foot-rest P. With 40 this construction, when the person wearing the climbing-clamps passes the chain through the hooks R S and raises his feet the spurs T-slip out of the links of the chain, and when the said person presses his feetdownward the spur T 5 passes through a link of the said chain, so that the said person can ascend the chain with nearly as much'facility as he would ascend a ladder.
Having thus fully described my invention, 50 I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent a In a climbing device, the combination, with the chain suspended'i'rom the building, of the rod 0, having straps Q, foot-rest P, hooks R 5 and S, and hinged spur T, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a person can readily ascend a chain, as set forth.
ANTHONY WARD.
