FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 287,883, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed January 31, 1884. (No model.)
a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the,
following is a full, clear, and exact description. a
This invention relates to that class of fire escapes in which the rope runs over suitable friction devices in a casing.
The invention consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim. On one of the side surfaces of the block a rod is secured, on which a traveler is held, to which a band or belt is fastened, which is provided at its free end with a hook or like device.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming .part of this specification,- in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is alongitudinal sectional elevation of our improved fire-escape. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a face view of part of the same.
In a block, 'A, four friction pins or thimbles, B, are held, which unite the sides'of the block, and are arranged on two diagonal lines, over which pins the rope or wire 0 is passed in the manner shown, which rope or wire also passes over the pins D at the top and bottom of theblock. At the top and at the bottom of the block a brake-lever, E, is pivoted, the inner ends of which levers are adapted to press the rope against the pins D. A rod, F,is se cured on one of the outer side surfaces of the block, and on the said rod atraveler, G, runs, to which one end of a band or belt, H, of leather or webbing, is secured, the opposite end of the" said band being provided with a hook, J, adapted to be passed over the rod F. A hook is secured on each end of the rope O, which rope is preferably rendered fire-proof or made of fire-proof material.
The apparatus is used in the following man ner: One end of the rope O is hooked in a window-sill or on some suitable heavy object in the room and the other end is thrown out of I the window. The band or belt H is passed around the body, and the hook J is passed over the rod F. Then theperson steps out of the window and slides down the rope slowly,
another person, who throws the end of the rope that has been fastened in the room out of the window and secures the opposite end of the rope in the room and then slides down, as described. The block is alike at both ends, and can be readily reversed, the traveler G sliding along the rod F to either end of the block. It is portable, and takes up a very small space in a gripsack, and weighs but a trifle. Any one on the ground can control the descent and lower at any angle, and two can descend at a time, if desired.
If desired, a rubber sleeve, K, may be used for a grip upon the rope, instead of or in addition t0 the levers E.
Having thus described..- our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a fire-escape, the combination, with the lique connecting-rod, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID 'WARE. CHARLES W. RIGHMAN.
