Description
UNITED srA'rns PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DALTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TR'USS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,972, dated July 3, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY DALToN, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a View of my improved truss; Fig. II, a view of one of the pads employed; Fig. III, a vview of the belt of the truss, showing the mode of adjusting the same; Fig. IV, a view of the hinge and slide, by which the pad is attached to the belt; Fig. V, a view of the band of steel and set screw, by which the pad is tightened or loosened; Fig. VI, a view of the slide, for holding the belt, when the same is adjusted to any desired length.
In the drawings, like parts of the invention are designated by similar letters.
The nature of the improvements made by me consists in the general arrangement of the parts, as herein set forth and for the purpose as described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I would remark that in the construction of the belt of the truss my improvements will be found particularly useful and highly beneficial. Itis a well known fact, that in the use of steel for this purpose, many disadvantages exist. Among these are, 1st, the liability to rust and corrode, thus causing it to be easily broken or to snap; and, 2nd, the inconvenience and annoyance occasioned by wearing the same. F or the purpose of making the belt (A) of the truss be adjusted by means of the holes (0, c, o, c) punched in the front portion of the same and the button (el) and when adjusted to any desired point, may be held in position by means of the slide (C) passing over and coupling one end of the belt Of the same composition, the pads (B, B) employed, are made. These also are covered with buckskin or any suitable material.
The means for attaching the pad B to the belt (A) consist of the slide (C) provided with a slot or opening through which the belt (A) passes, and the hinged piece projecting downward and hinged to the slide (C), the hinged piece of which forms the tube into which a bent rod, firmly attached to the back of the pad (B) is inserted, serving to connect the pad (B) with the belt (A) and renders the same adjustable. The slotted spring (G) is also attached to the slide (C) as shown in the drawing, and through the slot in the same, the set screw (71,) passes, to secure the hinge and pad in position as required. l
For certain cases one pad alone need be used and the other can be readily removed. In other cases both should be used. These pads (B, B) may at any time be varied in position, as they will be found to move readily to and fro, upon the belt The advantage arising from the use of my improvement consists in the fact that it does not oppress or annoy the party using it, but
is so soft and pliant, or elastic that the party may wear it continually and even sleep with the same upon the person, an advantage never before attained.
Having thus described the improvements made by me, what I claim as my invention and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent is- A truss combining the belt (A) slide (C) pads (B, B,) hinge (E) and set screws (h, L) when the same shall be arranged and open ated as herein described and for the purpose specified.
HENRY DALTON.
In presence of- 'IHos THANKLAND, A. SIDNEY DOANE.
