UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
KENNETH KENNEDY, OF KENYON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,660, dated December 4;, 1883.
Application filed July 31, 1883.
$0 aZZ whom it may concern/.- Be it known that I, KENNETH KENNEDY, of Kenyon, in the county of Glengarry, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Dumping-\Vagons, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a dumping-wagon that shall be cheap in construction and effective in operation, and admit of its being employed for ordinary uses, as a box-wagon, or for carrying a rack, and my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional eleva- 'tionof my improved dumping-wagon as an ordinary box-wagon. Fig. 2 is alike view of the same, showing the sectional bottom dumped. Fig. 3 is a plan of the box, the sides removed and the bottom dumped.
A are the four sill-pieces, rectangularly framed to support the wagon-box,which frame is carried upon the bolster and rear axle. The sides 0 of the box are provided with cleats D, which enter boxes E in the sills and support the sides removably. The bottom of the box.
is constructed of two sections, FF, each forming one-half of the floor, and are supported to tilt on pintles G, journaled to the longitudinal sills A. It will be seen that these pintles are arranged, not in the center of the sections F F, but at a point between their center and dumping end, so as to give greater weight at the outer ends of said sections, thus preventing accidental dumping of the wagon.
. J of the box are secured to the floor, and the ends provided with spring-catches H, which engage with the sills and assist in keeping the floor horizontal, .thus forming, with the remov-' able sides, a complete box.
I is a cross-bar, the ends secured to the sides of the box, which is designed as a stop and to cover the joint of the floor-sections.
I deem it important that the sections F F be The ends (No model.) Patented in Canada April 27, 1881, No. 12,691, and extended February 14, 1883, Nos.
16,287 and 16,288.
pivoted, as shown, for this arrangement not onlyprevents accidental dumping of the wagon but after the contents have been dumped the sections, by their own weight, fall into place, with their outer ends resting on the end sills, where the spring-catches H help to hold them.
I am aware of Patents Nos. 18,438 and 143,57 0, and make no claim to the constructions shown therein.
I deem it important that the bar I be rigidly secured to the sides of the box, and that it be slightly beveled on its under side, so as to form, with the beveled ends of the floor-sections, a perfect tight joint, whichwill be found very useful when it is desired to carry sand or other similar material, as it will prevent such material from sifting through and being scattered along the street.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a dumping-wagon having the rectangularly-formed sill-pieces A, and its bottom formed of two sections, each section pivoted at a point between its center and dumping end, and adapted to be supported, when horizontal, by the end sills, the bar I, rigidly secured to the sides of the box, and serving as a means of covering the joint of the floor-sections, substantially as described.
2. A dumping-wagon box consisting of the rectangularlyframed sill-pieces A, supporting the sides 0, the floor constructed of two sections, F F, independent of the sides, and carrying the end pieces, J, and tilting on pintles G, journaledinto the longitudinal sills, and the bar I, rigidly secured to the sides of the box, said end pieces being provided with springcatches H, arranged to be brought into action by the weight of the sections, and engaging with the end sills to hold the sectional bottom horizontal, all constructed and arranged sub stantially as shown and described.
' KENNETH KENNEDY.
