Description

JOSEPH W. HOBSON, OFBAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.`
DUMPING-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed June 6, 1907. Serial No. 377,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. HoBsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Im rovement in Dumping-Wagons, of which t ie following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in dumping wagons, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a wagon embodying my invention, the wheels on the one side being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating two of the bottom sections; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of one of the bottom sections. Fig. 4 is a detail section illustrating the bearings for the trunnions of the sections, and Fig. 5 is a detail section illustrating a somewhat different arrangement of bearing.
The vehicle may in general respects be of ordinary construction, the novelty consisting in the construction of the body whereby to secure the dumping operation, and in the means for operating the dumping parts, as
will be more'fully described.
As shown, the body has sides A, and is provided at the base thereof with bearings at B, for the trunnions C and C2 ofthe bottom sections C, whose plates C3 are secured near one edge upon the cross bars C4, providing the main or body wing of the plates C3 and the narrow overlapping extension C5 as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
The sections C are pivoted by the journaling of their trunnions C and C2 in the bear'- ings B of the sides A of the wagon body, and may be tilted to the full line position shown in Fig. 1, and illustrated in Fig. 2, in which they close the bottom of the wagon body, and in which the overlapping extension C5 of each plate overlaps the swinging edge of the adjacent plate and aids in securing a tight bot-A tom for the wagon, or such plates may be adjusted to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 1 to dump the contents of the wagon body as will be understood from Fig. 1.
Each section C is provided with a crank arm D alongside the wagon body and preferably secured to the trunnion C2 so the several F crank arms D will project upwardly alongside the body when the sections are adjusted to close the bottom of the body. The several crank arms D are connected at their swinging ends by a connecting rod E which is moved longitudinally toward the front of the wagon to the position shown in Fig. 1, by suitable means, preferably a chain F connected with the front end of the rod E and arranged to be wound on or unwound from a suitable drum in order to secure the parts in the full line position shown in Fig. 1, or to release the sections so they may be dumped by the weight of the load thereon as may be desired in the'use of the invention.
In practice, the plates C3 may be of steel, about TBths of an inch thick by 14 inches wide, more or less, bolted or riveted to the bars or shafts C4, which may be 1,1,- inch square, more or less, with the ends suitably rounded to form the trunnions bearing in the sides of the body. It will be noticed that the bottom sections extend transversely and are pivoted eccentrically so they will dump by gravity when released.
While the invention has been shown embodied in a four-wheel vehicle, it is manifest it may be used on two wheel carts where so desired.
In ournaling-the trunnions or ournals of the sections they may be journaled directly in the sides A and in the upright wings of the angle sills as best shown in Fig. 4, or boxes may be provided on the under sides of the base or ilat wings of the angle sills and have the bearings, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawin s.
`here desired the sills and side boards may be of wood. Manifestly any suitable material may be employed in the construction of the different parts of the device.
I claim:
1. The combination with a wagon body, of angle irons extending along the outer sides thereof adjacent to the bottom and having upright wings and lateral outwardly extending wings at the lower ends of the upright wings, tilting bottom sections having trunnions journaled in the u right wings and extending above the latera wings, said bottom sections having crank arms, and operating devices connected with the crank arms, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a wagon body, angle irons extending along the sidesthereof adjacent to the bottom of the body and having upright sills and laterally extending sills, tilting bottom sections journaled in connection with the said angle irons, and means for operating the bottom sections, substantially as-set forth.
3. The combination of a Wagon body, aning the tilting bottom sections, substantially glironszurod therottat `the bot'olrn of tlllle as set forth. g o y an avm u rig Wings an entera y Y r extending Wings,i aiid tilting bottom sections JOSEPH W' HOBSON having trunnions journaled in the upright Witnesses: Wings of the angle irons and resting on the ORRIN SERFoss, lateral Wings thereof, and means for operat- CHAs. B. BRUNNER.
