Description

(No Model.) G. BEER BEER GASK. No. 289,632. 1719i Patented Dec. 4, 1883.-
- Wneosw UNITED STATES PATENT BE-ER-CASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,632, dated December 4, 188 Application filed August 22, 1882. Renewed May 18, 1883., (No modeLl I .To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. EBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Beer-Oasks; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of th1s specification.
My invention relates to an improved up right beer cask or vat; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of the head in relation to the other parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a storage-vat or upright beer-cask which will combine all the strength and efficiency of the casks now in use, with the improved feature of being capable of being completely filled, and of greater convenience, cheaper of manufaclure, and more useful in service.
To this end the invention consists, essentially, in forming the head of staves wide at one end and narrow at the other, with straight sides, the wide ends being adapted to fit snugly in the internal annular groove, near the chine, and the narrow ends secured between screw-clamps in such a manner that the center of the head shall project outward beyond the transverse or diametrical plane of the chine. A hole in the center of the screwclamps allows the barrel to be filled from that point, while the swell of the head allows the barrel to be completely and solidly filled with beer, leaving no air-spaces within.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section; Fig. 2, a top plan view, and Fig. 3 a detail'view of the screw-clamp upon an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures-- A represents the body of the cask, of any ordinary and well-known construction, having the internal annular groove, a, in which are received the wide ends I) of the staves b, the narrow ends I) of which extend toward the center, and are clamped together, as shown.
0 represents a disk having an internallythreaded collar, 0, in which is screwed the externally-threaded collar 02 of the cap-disk D. These staves b are inclined outward from circumference to center to form a swelled-head, or a head the center of which is highest when the cask is on end. A central aperture, 00, in the clamp-disks is an inlet for the beer. The disks have an incline corresponding with the incline of the staves, and the joints between the staves radiate from the center.
E represents an elliptical door having beveled edges 6, to correspond with similar edges, f, of an elliptical aperture in the barrel. A button, 9, holds the door in place, and pressure from within makes a tight joint. 0
Modifications of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essential feature of which is the head and securing means herein set forth and shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a storage-vat or beer-cask, a head composed of staves having wide and narrow ends, the narrow ends forming the central portion of the head, and clamped together to form a convex exterior, as set forth.
2. The swelled h'ead formed of staves inclined outward from circumference to center, the inner ends being clamped securely together by screw-disks, as set forth, for the purposes specified.
and desire to secure by Letters and the whole adapted to serve,
3. The combination, with the cask A, of the staves b, the disk 0, having internally-threaded tubular collar 0, lar externally-threaded collar, d, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- HENRY o. EBER.
