Description

July 28, 1959 J. GUE RRA ETAL GUIDE FOR ELECTRIC CLIPPER-S Filed April 22. 1958 INVENTORS,
GUERRA JOSEPH A NTHO/VY Z EMo/vr 4% United States Patent This invention relates to a guide for use with electric clippers.
The object of the invention is to provide a guide which can be readily attached to or detached from electric clippers whereby a persons hair can be accurately and readily cut to the desired length.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guide assembly for use with or attachment to a pair of electric clippers, and wherein the guide assembly will permit the hair of a person to be cut uniformly to any desired height, and wherein the guide-assembly can be readily adjusted so that the hair can be cut to different lengths as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guide assembly for clippers which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the guide assembly of the present invention connected to the clippers.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the guide assembly removed from the clippers.
Figure 3 is an end elevational guide assembly.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the parts disassembled.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a set of conventional electric clippers which is provided with a slot 11, and the present invention is directed to a guide assembly for use with clippers such as the clippers 10 so that a persons hair can be cut uniformly or accurately. The guide assembly of the present invention is shown to comprise a base 12 which is adapted to be arranged below the clippers 10, and the base 12 includes a front curved or rounded portion 13. The upper portion of the base 12 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel channels or grooves 14, for a purpose to be later described. Each side of the base 12 is provided with a threaded aperture 15, Figure 4.
There is further provided a pair of spaced parallel similar plates which are each indicated by the numeral 16, and each plate 16 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart openings 17. An end of each plate 16 is rounded or curved as at 18. The numeral 19 indicates screw members or bolts which extend through the intermediate openings 17 and into threaded engagement with the apertures in the sides of the base 12.
There is further provided a pair of similar spaced apart support members which are each indicated by the numeral 20, and each support member 20 includes a first portion 21 which is seated in a groove 14. Each support member 20 further includes second portions 22 which are arranged at right angles with respect to the view illustrating the 2,896,323 Patented July 28, 1959 first portion 21, and the second portions 22 terminate in right angularly arranged third portions 23.
As shown in the drawings, there is further provided a pair of spaced parallel body members 24, and each body member 24is provided with a pair of apertured cars 25 which are connected to the portions 23 of the support members 20.
Arranged adjacent one side of the base 12 is a bar 26 which is provided with slots or cutouts 27 that are adapted to register with adjacent portions of the support members 20, and one of the screw members 19 retains the bar 26 connected to a side of the base 12. Extending from the bar 26 and secured thereto or formed integral therewith is a tongue 28 which seats in the groove 11 or slot 11 of the clippers 10. The tongue 28 is provided with a recess or opening 29, Figure 4.
There is further provided a locking member or lever 30 which is pivotally connected to the base 12 by means of a pivot pin 31. The numeral 32 indicates a screw member which is arranged in engagement with an opening 33 in the rear of the base 12.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that there has been provided a guide for electric clippers wherein hair can be cut accurately and evenly and uniformly to dififerent heights or lengths. The guide assembly of the present invention is adapted to be connected to a conventional 7 set of clippers such as the clippers 10, and then the clippers 10 can be gripped in the hand in the usual manner and moved along a persons head so that the body member 24 will move along the head whereby the clippers will have their cutting members spaced a predetermined distance from the head so that the hair will be cut at the same length all over the head. This is especially suitable when hair is being cut in the so-cailed crew on style.
The mounting of the guide is accomplished by inserting the tongue 28 in the usual slot 11 of the clippers 10 and the base 12 is arranged below the clippers 10 as shown in the drawings. The base 12 is provided with the spaced apart channels or grooves 14, and the pair of support members 20 have their portions 21 arranged in the grooves 14. The plates 16 are arranged alongside of the base 12 and are held in place by means of the screw members 19, and the body members 24 have their apertured ears 25 connected to the portions 23 of the support members 20, and then the outer ends of the portions 23 may be peened over so that accidental separation of the body members 24 from the portions 23 will be prevented. When it is desired to adjust the guide, the screw member 32 can be loosened so as to permit shifting movement of the support member 2|] in the rearmost groove 14 whereby the body members 24 can be moved to different positions with respect to the base 12, and then the screw member 32 can be tightened so as to retain the parts immobile in their adjusted positions.
The front portion of the base 12 is rounded as at 13, and the front ends of the body members 24 are also rounded, and the front ends of the plates 16 are also rounded or curved so as to insure that these parts will glide smoothly over the hair or head.
The parts can be made of any suitable material and in difierent shapes or sizes. The opening 29 in the tongue 28 provides sufiicient clearance for the usual nylon cam on the clippers.
The guide assembly is adapted to be snapped on or attached to various conventional makes of electric clippers and can be used by professional barbers as well as by persons cutting hair in the home or the like. The guide insures that there will be an accurate and straight crew cut and the guide can be adjusted for any height of hair depending upon the desires of the customer or other person. The guide will eliminate the necessity of free hand 3 cutting and the members 24 will slide on the head without pressure from the operator so that the hair can be cut more readily and in less time.
In use, the friction type lever 30 is opened or moved to the position shown in Figure l and then the clippers are placed on the base 12 and the tongue 28 is inserted into the slot 11 in the clipper from the left side of the clipper and the tongue 28 rests with spring pressure on the bottom of the cutter only and will not touch the top of the movable cutter mechanism. Then, the lever 30 is moved to closed position, as for example as shown in Figures 2 'and3 so as to lock the tongue 28 in place, and then the adjustable runners or members 24 are adjusted for height desired, Thetongue 28 and bar 26 can be changed or replaced so that the guide assembly will fit difierent makes or types of conventional clippers, and when the lever or locking member 30 is to be rotated or moved, the screw member 31 can be loosened, and after the lever 30 has been moved to the desired position, the screw member31 can be tightened.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, if desired.
