HENRY A. CHURCH, oE PROVIDENCE, RHoDE ISLAND.
ROLLER-CHAIN CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of" Letters Patent No. 289,618, dated December 4, 1883. Application tiled September 24, 183. (No model.)
To all whom, t 11m/y Con/cern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. CHURCH, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented vcertain new and useful Improvements in Roller- Chain Caps;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference 1narkedthereon,which form a part of this specification.
This my present invention relates to certain improvements in ornamental or jewelry chains of the class generally known among manner of covering or capping the units which form one side or edge of the chain, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
To illustrate my invention I have prepared the annexed sheet of drawings, in which- Figurel represents a side View of a portion of aroller-chain, the top row of units being providedwith my improved cover or cap. Fig. 2 represents the same with the caps removed. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2, except the twisted ends of the stringing or binding wires have not been clipped. Fig. 4 represents a vertical longitudinal section through the. chain, showing the manner of building it up, the ends of the wires, however, not being twisted or clinched. Fig. 5 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing two of the unit coverings or caps in section and secured to said units. Fig. 6 represents abottom view of the lower outside unit, showing the bent end of the wire staple. Fig. 7 represents abottom view of an intermediate unit. Figs. 8 and 9 represent sectional and top views, respectively, of my improvement. Fig. 10 represents a top view of modification of the cap, all the views being enlarged.
covering Bf for said top units, and the bentv ires or staples b. 'Ihe bottom units, B, have two openings, b2, therein, into which the wire stapleb is inserted, as fully shown. (See Fig. 4.) Vhen, after passing said staple through the intermediate units,A, the ends are inserted through the top units, B2, (the latter being smaller than the other units,) after which the ends of the wire staples are twisted together, as shown at b, Fig. 3, and then out off flush with the upper edge of the units B2, as shown in Fig. 2. rIhe chain is now ready to receive the metallic coverings or caps B,which are of the form shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the top side or end thereof having a convex center, b4, rim b5, and parallel sides b. Said caps, after being placed over the units B?, are secured both together by soldering, burnishing, or any other well-known means, thus completing the chain. vThe caps B are made from blanks by suitable dies, Src., in amanner common to other analogous work, a description thereof not being deemed essential to this specification.
My object in making the center of the cover or cap convex, as at b4, is -to approximate inv form and appearance to the metallic units B of the opposite side ofthe chain,which latter have the staples b passing through them, the bend thereof being exposed, as shown in FigsAt and 6.
I have shown in Fig. 10, at bl, a modification of the center of the cap B, which maybe made IOO staples which unite the several units together,
ing` formed to approximate the outer end of the opposite and reverse unit, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
2. In a roller-chain, the combination, with the intermediate units, A', end units, B B2,united by the Wire staples b, of the unit covering or oap B', having a closed end, .consisting of the convex center b4, rim b5, and parallel sides b9, substantially as shown and described.
3. The oap B, consisting ofthe parallel sides b9, rim b5, and convex center b, all made from a piece of sheet metal, and adapted to cover 01' cap thefupper series of units, B2, of the rollerehain A, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sigi 5 nature in presence of tvvo Witnesses.
HENRY A. CHURCH. Witnesses:
GEO. II. REMINGTON, CHARLES HANNIGAN.
