Be it known that we, LEONIDAS H. BINK- LEY and THoMAs H. VRIGHT, both of Ironton, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Blotter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved device for holding writingpaper, a blotting-pad, and slates, which device is to be so arranged that it can be used for ruling the paper held in the same.

The invention consists inthe peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as herein after fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a I perspective view of our improved blotter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line a; m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 3 3 Fig. 2.

A board, A, is provided at one end with a spring-clip, B, of the usual construction, for the purpose of holding sheets, 0, of paper on the said board. A slate, D, is held on the under side of the board A. At the end opposite the one on which the clip B is fastened the board A is provided on each side with pintles E, which pintles pass into longitudinal grooves E in the inner edges of the side pieces, F, of a frame, F, theboard Abeing thus adapt ed to slide in or out of the said frame F, which is open at the upper end. Pointers G are loosely mounted on the pintles E, and rest on the upper surfaces of the side bars, F, of the frame F, which side bars are graduated or provided with scales. The bottom cross-piece, H, of the frame F, which is graduated or 'provided with a scale on its upper surface, is pivoted at its ends to links J, pivoted to the outer surfaces of the side bars, F, at the lower ends of the same. A board, K, is adapted to slide in a longitudinal groove, K, in the inner edge of the cross-piece H, which board K is provided with a clip, L, passing under the crosspiece H, and forming a tongue or pointer, L, I

on the upper surface of the cross-piece. .The said clip thus prevents the removal of the board K from the cross-piece H, but permits of sliding or adjusting the said board K on the crosspiece H. A piece of blotting-paper, M, is held on the under side of the board K by transverse spring-wires N at the ends of the board. A spring-finger, O, is pivoted on the upper end of the board A, and passes through a slot in the clip B, which spring-finger O is to hold the covering-board K'on the sheets of paper 0 or on the board A. A slate, P, is held in a frame, P, provided in its end pieces with longitudinal tongues 19, which pass into grooves in the inner surfaces of the end pieces, F F, on the bottom of the frame F, thus permitting the said slate to slide laterally, so that it will project more or less from either side of the frame F. The paper-holding frameA is provided at its upper end with two downwardly -projecting spring-legs, Q, provided with prongs Q, adapted to pass into notches in the under side of the slate-frame P, for the 'purpose of holding the same in place. The said legs also form a support for the upper end of the paper -ho1ding board. The frame F is provided on its under side with a transverse. U- shaped'wire, R, or other suitable support, on which the upper end of the frame rests.

The blotter is used as follows: The sheets of paper 0 onthe board A can be ruled transversely by drawing a pencil along the upper edge of the blotter-board K, the board A being drawn out successively as the lines are ruled. Thepointers G G, sliding over the scales on the side pieces, F F, of the frame F, permit of easily adjusting the blotter-board in such a'manner that the lines will all be of a regular distance apart. Ifthe sheet is to be ruled longitudinally,the "blotter-board K is moved laterally, and the lines are drawn along in case the writing is to be blotted. If calculations, &c., are to be made while writing on the sheets 0, the slate P can be drawn out laterally, as shown in Fig. 1. If it is not desired to write on the sheet 0, but on the slate D on the under side of the board A, the blotter K is swung down, the board A is swung over it, and then is moved toward the upper end of the frame F until the pointers G are at the upper end of the same. Then only the slate D is exposed. If the slate P and the slate D are to be exposed, the board A is swung down over the board K. 1

If desired, the slate 1? can be removed, or can be dispensed with entirely.

One of the side pieces, F, of the frame F can be provided with a groove, S, for receiving pencils, &c. If writing with a pencil, it is not necessary to swing down the blotterboard K, but only necessary to withdraw the paper-holding board A as far as may be desired.

Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination," with a board, of a clip for holding paper on the same, a swinging blotter-board, and a spring-finger in the clip for holding the blotter-board on the clip-board, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with a frame, of a longitudinally-sliding board adapted to hold sheets of paper, and a hinged and transverselysliding blotter, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with a frame having scales on the side bars, of a paper-holding board adapted to slide in the said frame, and provided with pointers, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with a frame having scales on its side bars, of a sliding paper-holding board provided with pointers and a hinged and transversely-sliding blotter, substantially as herein shown and described.

5.- The combination, with the frame F, provided wit the longitudinal grooves E and the graduated side pieces, F, of the paper-holding board A, provided with the pintles E and pointers G, substantially as herein shown and described.

6. The combination, with the frame F, of a sliding and reversible board provided with means for securing paper on one side, and having a slate on the other side, substantially as herein shown and described.

7. The combination, with the grooved frame F, having graduated side pieces, F, for its side bars, of the paper-holding board A, provided with the pintles E and the pointers G, and having the slate D on one side, substantially as herein shown and described.

8. The combination, with the frame, of a sliding paper -holding board, a cross -piece hinged to the said frame, and a blotter-holding board held to slide in the said cross-piece, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

9. The combination, with the frame F, of the cross-piece H, the links J, pivotedto theends of the cross-piece H and to the frame F, and the blotter-holder K, sliding on the cross-piece, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

10. A combined slate, writing-board, and blotter, consisting of a grooved frame, a transversely-sliding slate, a sliding and reversible writing-board, and a hinged and transverselysliding blotter, substantially as herein shown and described.

11. A combined slate, writing-board, and blotter, consisting of the frame F, the slate P, sliding in transverse ways of the said frame, the reversible board A, sliding in vertical ways of the same, the hinged and transversely-sliding blotter H K M, and devices for holding the paper on the board and locking the several parts in position, substantially as herein shown and described.
