FRANZ CARL BENEDICT, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 ALOIS LGWY, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
BLOTTING-CRADLE.
To all whom it may concern: Y Be it known that I, FRANZ CARL BENE- DICT, subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at Pappenheimgasse 8, Vienna, XX, in the Province of Lower Austria and Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blotting-Cradles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of'my invention is a blottlng cradle, the blotting plate of which can be conveyed from the curved intoa flat shape, so that it may be used as a rule for tracing lines.
In the annexed drawings an example of the blotting cradle is illustrated in vertical section (Figure l) and in plan view (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show a modification.
The bow part Z) which is provided with blotting paper a, may be conveyed from the curved into the flat shape, as is represented in Fig. 1 by dotted lines. The stretched bow part which may be provided with a longitudinal scale, can then be used as a common rule for drawing lines. The stretching or flattening of the part b is of fected according to the present invention by moving the handle button 0 along a guide bar cl secured in the middle of the part Z). The button 0 will be held in position by a spring lever f which engages a notch in the guide bar (Z. The lever f is to be released either by hand and merely by pressing upon the lever end projecting from the button 0 or in any other suitable manner. To the button 0 are hinged two stretching arms 9, the other ends it of which are movably connected with the back of the bow part b. If now the handle button a, being in the position illustrated by full lines, will be released and moved down the guide bar, until the lever f Wlll engage a second notch, as is represented by dotted lines, the bow part b will be stretched or flattened by the stretching arms 9. The back of the bow part Z), which is provided with the two clamping devices 75 for the blotting papers at and carries a soft layer 2' of felt or the like to support the papers a, may be constituted by several steel sheets Z which can slide in relation to each other. The uppermost sheet Z for example is provided with a slot m, through which the lower end 72. of the respective stretching Specification of Letters Patent.

arm 9 passes into the back and will he slidably held therein.
In case the bow part b has the tendency to spring into the flat shape, the transferring from the curved into the flat shape will be eflected only by releasing the bow part I) being held in curved shape. The arms 9 may be simply pivotally connected to the back of the blotting cradle, as shown in Fig. 3. The handle button 0 may also be arranged so as to fix the stretching device merely by turning the said button. For this purpose the latter may be provided for example with an inner lug or screw 10 (Fig. 3) projecting into a slot g of the guide bar d. The said slot terminates at the lower end or as shown at the lower and upper end in a short transverse or horizontal part 1". If now the button. 0 will be turned when it is in respectively its lower or upper end position, the button and also the part b will be fixed in the flat or curved condition.
Claims.
1. A blotter of the character described, comprising a flexible plate, means on the plate to support a blotter, a stem extending from the flexible plate, and means operable on the stem and connected to the plate for holding the plate curved, when in one position and permitting said plate to assume aflat shape when said means are in another position.
comprising a flexible plate,- means on the plate to support a blotter, a stem extending from the plate, a slidable element on the stem, members extending from the slidable element to the plate, whereby when the sliding element is in one position the flexible plate will be curved and when said element is in another position the flexible plate will be flat, and means for holding the slidable element in locked position on the stem when in one position.
3. A blotter of the character described, comprising a flexible plate, a stem extending therefrom, a slidable element on the stem, arms pivoted to the slidable element and engaging the plate, and a locking device carried by the slidable element to lock the latter to the stem whereby to hold the plate in a curved or a flat position.
4:. A blotter of the character described 2. A blotter of the character described,
comprising we --bese eoxnprised ii of (e plui'fllity of flexible plates, means including an ele- .ment. slideble with reference to the base and,
oppositely extended warms between the; 'slidable element and the base to set the letter in a curved or flat position, and means for; looking the slidable element in either posi-: .tion. e 5. A blotter or the character described, comprising a fiexihle pla'te, "a stem extending from the plate and formed With notches,f elslidzilole element mounted on ithe :-stem,:two
arms pivoted to the slidahle element, the
router endsof said arms engaging the flexible plate, a locking latch pivoted to the sliding element and adapted to engage with eitherof'the notches in the stem to hold the plate in a fiat or a curved position.
