Description
D. SGHUYLER.
(No Model.)
MUsLo GABINET-- g WITNESSES:
ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES DANIEL SGHUYLER, LOF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
MUSlCCABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 289,570, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed August 7, 1SH3. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, DANIEL SCHUYLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
rIhis invention has reference to certain improvements in the music-cabinetfor which Letters Patent have been filed by me under I@ dat@ of April 5,- 1883, and serial No. 90,756,
whereby a simpler form of'cabinet, that can also be used as a file for newspapers, writingpaper, and the like, is obtained;l and the invention consists of a casing that is open at the front, and provided with a rack hinged to the bottom of the same, said rack havingV a weighted and inclined bottom. The rack is retained in an open horizontal position by fixed bottom hooks engaging stop-pins of the 2o side walls of theicasing, and in a vertical position by a button and a spring-catch near the lower part of the rear wall of the casing.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation, and Figs. 2 and 2 5 3 are vertical transverse sections of my improved music-cabinet, showing the same, re- 4 spectively, in closed and open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the casing of my improved music-cabinet, which casing is made of any suitable material7 size, and finish, and which is attached to the wall by hooks, screws, or other fastening devices, that are' passed through holes in the back of the casing A. The casing A is open at the front, and provided with a rack, B, that is hinged to the bottom A' of the casing A. The rack B has a bottom, B', with an upwardly-extend- 40 ing inner strip or flange and partly or entirely closed sides. The upper surface of the bottom B' is inclined toward the front panel of the rack, so as to throw the upper sheets of music slightly forward, and facilitate thereby their removal from the rack. The bottom B' is made of sufficient thickness, so that its weight overcomes the weight of the front panel of the rack, and causes thereby the return of the same into vertical positionwhen it has been 5o lifted far enough so that its center of gravity passes over .the rack-hinges to the interior of the casing. The bottom B of the rack may also be leaded, so as to increase its weight. Stop-hooksb are applied to the sides of the rack B, and adapted to engage xed stoppins b' of the side walls of the casing A, the side walls being set back sufficiently to pass along the stop-pins, or provided with grooves, so as to move along the stop-pins.
In place of using a rack having weighted or leaded bottom, the stop-pins maybe made of sufficient size to produce the counterbalancing of the frontpanel of the rack, and return the same into upright position when the same has been lifted far enough. The
bottom-A' of the casing A is provided with` recesses b2, into which the stop`hooks enter when the rack is in its vertical position. A stop-pin, d, at the upper part of one or both side walls of the casing A serves to stop the rack when it arrives in upright position, and
on the button e to retain the front rack until a sufficient forward pressure is exerted upon the panel of the same, so'that the button is released from the spring. By arranging the retaining-spring near the bottom of the casing A, it is entirely hid by the rack, whether the same is in open or closed position.
The cabinet can be manufactured cheaply, and forms a neat and convenient device for storing away music and other articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A music-cabinet consisting of a casing open at the front, and a rack hinged to the front edge of the bottom of the same, and means, substantially as described, whereby the rack is retained in a horizontal or upright position, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a casing, A, open at the front, a rack, B, having a weighted bottom, B', and being hinged to the bottom of the Vcasing A, hooks b b, attached to the rack, and stop-pins b' b', attached to the side walls of the casing, substantially as set forth. y
3. The combination of a casing, A, open at the front, a rack, B, that is hinged to the bottom of the casing and provided with a weighted IOO bottom, hooks b b, attached to the rack, stopmy invention I have signed my name in prespins b b', attached to the side Walls of the casence of tWo subscribing Witnesses. ing, a button, e, at the rear Wall of the bottorn of the rack, and a retaining-spring,V e', DANIEL SGHUYLER" 5 applied to the rear Wall'of the easing, sub- Witnesses: stantially as speeied. CARL KARP,
In testimonythat I claim the foregoing as SIDNEY MANN.
