f /z l. a 1/ s Y 'I'. HYATT. ILLUMINATING GRATING TILE AND. CONSTRUGT No.- 289,538. y l Pane UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS HYATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
lLLUMlNATlNG'GRATlNG-TILE AND CONSTRUCTIONS MADE THEREFROM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,538, dated December 4, 1883.
Application lecl November 7, 1883. (No model.)
T all whom it may .con/cern,.-
Be it knownthat I, THAnDEUs HYATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in` Illuminating Grating-Tiles and Constructions Made There p from, oi which the following is a description,
reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, making part of .this speciiication.
My invention relates to illuminating-gratings made in the shape of tiles orpanels, and employed for constructing roofs and roof-pavements.
The object of my improvements is to prevent such panels from cracking through unequal shrinkage when blades to make them selfsupporting are cast on one side of the plate. A further object is to prevent the webs of such blades, when so cast upon one face of the plate, from obstructing the course of the light-rays in their passage to or through the glasses.
Figure 1 is a perspective View representing one of my improved illuminating gratings or' tiles, some of the light-holes being open and some of them blocked with glass. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of thesa1ne,in order to clearly represent the construction of the blades.
A is the perforated plate or grating tile; B, supporting-blades cast upon it; a, open lightholes of the grating; b, open light holes or spaces in the blades; C, parts of the blade that connect with the tile.
My invention consists in casting upon the tile a blade or a number of blades made with light holes or spaces, for the purpose of bringing the metal of the blade into the same relai l tion with the cooling and shrinking processes 4o that take place when the casting is first made,
as is held to them by the open-work metal that forms the plate or grating, the open spaces of the blades likewise serving the subordinate purpose of lightways for light to cross through them in all directions freely. These castings may be made in three-parted iiasks, either y by the aid of or without sandcores.
In constructing illuminating top roofs of these tiles the blades are preferably placed 5o uppermost; but in the construction of areacoverings and sidewalks the blades are of necessity on the under side. The blades may cross the light-holes or run between the ranges.
What- I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
'1. Ametal grating tile or plate cast with one or more open-work blades, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and illustrated.
2. A metal grating tile or plate cast with one or more open-work blades, and combined with glasses set in the light-holes thereof, sub* stantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and illustrated.
3. Illuminating roofs and roof -pavements constructed of metal grating tiles or plates cast with one or more open-work blades, and combined with glasses set in the light-holes thereof, substantially as and for the purposes 7o i herein set forth and illustrated.
In testimony whereof` I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TH ADDEUS HYATT.
