WLR. FOWLER.
MECHANICAL TOY HOOP.
Patented Deo 4, L883,
N4 PETERS Phuwulhn mr. Walhlllgton. l1 c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAlWR. FOWLER, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MECHANICAL TOY HOOP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,523, dated December-4:, 1883.
Application filed May 8, 1883. (No model.)
toys; and it consists of a figure provided with IO movable arms or legs, or both, carried on the endof a stick, and combined with a suitable hoop-wheel provided with cams to actuate said arms or legs, whereby the said figure and hoop or wheel, when pushed alongthe ground,
I represent a boy or girl rolling a hoop, and in details of construction, all of which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, which form part thereof.
Toy hoop-sticks have been made with the figure of a man, which, when rolled along the ground, causes the arms and legs of the figure to move as in the act of walking; but to my knowledge no toy has been made to represent a boy or girl rolling a hoop in which the arm carrying thehoop-stick strikes the hoop, and in such a toy the figure must be larger than the hoop.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the actuating mechanism detached.
A is the hoop or wheel, which, for cheapness, may be made of a piece of wire bent round, with an arm, 13, extending into the center, which then may be bent again at right angles to form the sleeve 0. This sleeve 0 is carried on a bearing, D, having a socket, E, in which the end of the handle F is secured.
G are cam projections secured to the end of o'the sleeve 0, and are arranged to actuate the legs I, which are pivoted to the body H at J, the said body being carried by the'bearing D. These legs I, near their fulcrum J, are notched,
as at K, forming a projection k, which, during the rotation of the wheel A, is struck by the 4 5 cam projections G, causing the legs to be alternately thrown backward, to imitate a boy running. The legs are not quite long enough to touch the ground, being designed to work freely in the air.
. L is a pivoted arm, which is provided with a hoop-stick, M. This arm is vibrated by a rod, N, which is in connection with one of the legs I, and is thereby made to strike the hoop rapidly as the toy is pushed over the ground. 5 I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it may be modified in various ways without departing from my invention.
I am aware of thepatent to Cleveland, No. 85,727, of 1869, and claim nothing therein shown or described. I
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, amechanical toy which consists of a wheel adapted to be propelled along the ground, in combina tion with a figure located wholly on one side of said wheel, and provided with a pivoted arm carrying a hoop-stick, and mechanism actuated by the rotating wheel to cause said arm to strike the hoop with said stick as in the act of rolling the hoop, substantially as and for the 1 purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
