BRIDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,452, dated December 4, 1883. Application filed September 25, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, E. EUGENE SAEGEANT, of Newark, `in the county of Essex and State oi' New Jersey, have invented Improvements in the Construction of Bridle-Bits; and I do hereby` declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making Vpart of this specication- Figure 1 being a top view of a bit const-ructed with my improvements 5 Fig. 2, a front view of the same; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5, views in detail, showing my improved mode of constructing the parts of a jointed mouthpiece.
Like letters designa-te corresponding parts in all of the gures.
In the construction of j ointed mouth-pieces of malleable cast metal, I have made an improvement .in means for linking together the two eyes b c of the joint, as follows: The open eye b is cast with acore, so as to leave an opening of sufficient width to admit the closeeye c between lapped parts d d, substantially as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. These lap parts have ends of square form or slightly inclined form outwardly, as shown, and the corresponding shoulders, e e, against which the ends are to fit, are of corresponding form-that is, square or slightly undercut-so that when the two lap parts are swaged or pressed together a close joint will be made, and one not liable to become opened or started in the slightest degree. Besides, to obtain the best results, I make little protuberances or ridges ff on the outer edges at the ends of thelapped parts, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Then, when the parts are pressed together, these ridges are swaged down or spilled7 over 4the adjacent seams, thereby filling the seams and making a better job than would otherwise be possible for making a smooth and un broken surface. This joint is a strong and eX- cellent one, cheaply made, and produces a superior bit. This means of making an open eye to receive another `part and closing the eye is applicable to any part of a bit or mounting as well as to a jointed mouth-piece.
I claim as my invention- I. In a bridle-bit, the eye b of a jointed mouth-piece, cast with open lapped parts d d, each adapt-ed to fit against a shoulder on the opposite part, substantially as and for the pur pose herein specified.
2. A bridle-bit provided with an eye cast with lapped parts d d and protuberances f f thereon, substantiallyas and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
E. EUGENE` SARGEANT.
