Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC CHARLESF. BARTER, OF MOUNT VERNON, INDIANA.
FRUIT-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,374, dated December 4, 1883.
Application fifcd October 19, 1883. (No model.)
f 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BARTER, a citizen of Indiana, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Posey and State of In diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Cans, and I do de- 20 ject is attained by the device illustrated in the Fig. 3, end views of theyoke,
accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Fig. 2 is a plan;
Figure l is an elevation- (detached) showing the construction of each end of the yoke and the manner of securing it to the can. Fig. 4: is asectional view of the cover of the can. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the rubber band. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the can, its cover, and indiarubber gasket.
The letter A indicates a thu1nb-screw,which penetrates the yoke B, which has a perforation provided with screw-threads for that purpose.
G is the top of the can, and Ois the removable cover of a circular opening therein, having a raised rim, IJ. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
F are pins projecting from opposite sides of the can G, and are intended to enter the open ings H H in ends B and B of the yoke B. (Shown in detail in Fig. 3.)
To seal the can, the rubber band D is placed upon rim E, (of the opening in the top of the can the cover 0 is then laid thereon; the perforation H is then placed on one of the pins F, the yoke is then swung round until the other pin F enters the opening H; the thumb-screw is then screwed down upon the cover C until a tight joint is made.
The can G is preferably made of sheet meta], as well as the cover 0; but I do not confine myself to this material, as, with slight modifications, glass as well as jars of stoneware may be used-such as a jar having an outwardlyprojecting rim at the top-and pins F secured thereto in some convenient manner.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
In a fruit-can, the can G, having pins F and rim E, in combination with rubber D,
cover 0, and yoke B, having thumb-screw A, and openings H H, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
J. E. Woons, A. J. CLARK.
