JOHN FRED. RITTVVEGER, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
RECUPERATOR GAS-FU RNAC E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,308, dated November 27, 1883. V Application led September 6, 1883. (No model.)
`such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l of the drawingsis a representation of atop plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to converterbottoms, and the construction and novel arrangement of the t-uyeres, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, a designates the improved converter-bottom. b indicates the shoulder of the converter-bottom, composed of tire-clay and tire-sand, Src. The tuyeres care hexagonal in form from their tops to the shoulders d, at their lower ends, where they are round, the side walls, e, of the shoulders being beveled inwardly and upwardly.
b indicates a metallic plate, which is provided with perforations for the passage of the tuyeres c, the shoulders d of which engage the said plate,` as shown in Fig. 3. Each tuyere has twelve holes extending longitudinally through it. The holes f are funnel-shaped 4for a portion of their length, commencing at the bottom, and are arranged in rows, as'shown 4o in the drawings.
In my construction there are no unnecessary joints. The rounded ends ofthe tuyeres project through the iron plate of the converterbottom, and iron clamps o are bound around them, the ends of the clamps projecting at diametricallyopposite points to retain the tuyeres in position. This construction reduces the number of pieces and joints, and produces a more solid and durable bottom.
By inclining the walls e of the tuyeres, the clamps ocan be more securely placed thereon, and the liability of them being blown off prevented. By placing the tuyeres in this position they assist each other, making "the work equal on all of the tuyeres, thereby rendering the blauking and reblanking of the tuyeres unnecessary.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 6o Letters Patent, is*
The combination, with the shoulderb of the converter-bottom, of the perforated metallic plate b', the hexagonal tuyeres having their side walls, e, beveled inwardly and upwardly, 65 and having the blast-passagesf arranged in a group withinl the shoulder b,.and secured in position by clamps o around their beveled and rounded ends, substantially as speciIied.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in 7o presence of two witnesses.
JOHN FRED. RITTVVEGER.
