handle to a tool, and has particular refer ence to a tool which is normally of such form as will afford comparatively little hold for a handle. It is also particularly applicable to tools of slender character, such as miners needles, which are liable to be distorted or even broken by torsional or twist ing strains, the device of the present invention providing such a hold as to distribute the strains and as far as possible prevent breaking.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a miners needle and a handle therefor constructed in accordance with the invention, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts before they are connected together. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. t illustrates a slight modification in the location of the handle on the tool.
Referring to the drawings, the tool body 2,
which in the present adaptation is a miners needle, has its extremity 3 bent or disposed at substantially right angles thereto. The handle l, preferably of grip type, may be formed of malleable iron or steel with the side thereof adjacent the tool grooved or of channel form as indicated at 4:. In the adaptation shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a portion of this channel at one side of the center of the handle is closed to provide a tubular open-end socket 5 which receives the tool extremity 3. Extending outwardly from the end of socket 5 is the socket-like extension 6 provided with the bendable side portions 7 the latter being open or separated as in Figs. 2 and 3 to receive tool body 2, and after the latter is in place parts 7 are bent over the tool, as in Fig. 1, thereby securely fastening the handle.
When it is desired to connect the tool and handle at one end of the latter the construction is as shown in Fig. 4, the socket portions being simply formed at one end of the handle, and in order to take care of the end thrust of the tool the handle end may be provided with a boss 8. In the first described construction the end thrust is borne by handle part 4 intermediate its ends.
The improved connection so unites the tool and handle that the latter cannot work loose nor turn on the tool. Also strains, and particularly twisting or torsional strains,
are transmitted to all portions of the tool so that the danger of torsionally distorting the latter, for instance when a miners needle is stuck in the hole drilled to receive a charge of powder, is eliminated as far as possible. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not confined to miners needles, being applicable to tools of various kinds.
I claim 1. The combination with a tool formed with a laterally extended extremity, of a handle provided with an open-end socket adapted to receive the tool extremity, the handle formed with flexible parts adjacent to the socket and extending at an angle therefrom to receive therebetween a portion of the tool adjacent the extremity of the latter with said flexible parts bent around the tool for holding it and the handle in assembled relation.
2. The combination with a tool having a laterally extended extremity, of a handle formed with an open-end socket, the handle having part of channel form disposed at an angle to and constituting an open continuation of the socket with the tool entered in said channel and the tool extremity extended into the socket, the handle formed with flexible parts which are bent around the tool for confining the latter and the tool extremity within the channel and within said socket, respectively.
