3 Claims. Cl. 206-31) This application is a continuation-impart of my Present application, Serial No. 213,192, filed February 28, 1951, and now Patent No. 2,752,034, issued June 26, 1956.
This invention relates to improvements in match box dispensers and to a type of dispenser in which the com merically available match box comprising an open ended slide-on cover, an insert strip and an open top tray may serve as an example of the component parts of the assembly thereof, and more particularly to improvements in a vertically disposed apertured match box dispenser with a trough arranged to project outwardly from the lower front portion thereof.
More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide two improved embodiments in the above-described dispenser wherein the construction of the component parts of each embodiment is devised to provide an improved assembly in which three succmsive positions of the inserted tray serve the means for positioning certain parts to assemble the dispenser.
Another object is to provide in both of the improved embodiments features of an improved trough in which the provision of indents of an acute type angle in the upper and lower portions of the trough sides thereof determines the portions thereof extending rearwardly within the apertured dispenser, and wherein the indents, in combination with the assembled position of the inserted tray and trough base, provide a fixed position of the outwardly projecting trough.
Another object is to provide in both of the improved embodiments inverted hanging tabs at the top and bottom of the rear wall of the slide-on cover.
The first improved embodiment relates in part to a slide-on cover in which the lower front portion thereof is constructed to fold :upon itself above the lower edge of the cover aperture and to be disposed therein to provide, in assembled relationship, the positioning of: the supporting flap in the tray, the bottom of the tray just above the bottom edge of the slide-on cover, and the trough base parallel with the inside front wall of the slide-on cover; and wherein the center portion at the upper edge of the cover aperture extends upwardly in an arched contour to provide a substantial end Portion to serve as a supporting flap.
The second improved embodiment relates in part to a slide-on cover in which the lower front portion thereof is integrally hinged to the upper edge of the cover aperture to provide a hinged lid with a center tab at the front edge thereof.
A further object is to provide an improved trough in the second improved embodiment in which the features of the above-mentioned trough are incorporated together with those wherein the trough front thereof is provided with a center notch and the trough base is provided at the lower edge thereof with ,abase flap.

The construction of the component parts of each of the improved embodiments is so devisedas to provide. an improved assembly in which three successive positions ,of the tray serve the means to provide the insertion of certain parts of the dispenser. In the first position, the tray is adapted to be slidably positioned in the aperturegl slide-on cover almost to the lower edge of thecover aperture; in the second position, to be slidably moved downwardly to provide for the lower portion of the tray to extend out below the bottom edge of the slide-oncover; and in the third position, to be slidably moved upwardly and inserted fully into the slide-oncover.

In this construction, the scored foldable and insertable trough-strip is provided thereon with a pair of intersecting scored lines 73C and 74C spacedinwardly fromeaqh of the shorter ends thereof and disposed thereon substanfirst mproved an tially medial of the longer ends thereof, as shown in the trough-strips illustrated throughout the drawings, the scored line 73C defining the top edge of each of the trough sidesand the scored line 74C defining the side edge thereof. Spaced outwardly toward one of the longer ends of the trough-strip and disposed-inwardly adjacent to and forming a continuation of each of the scored lines 73C is a 'pair of intersecting scored lines 73A and 73B defining an acute type angle. Spaced outwardly toward the other longer end of the trough-strip and disposed inwardly adjacent to and forming a continuation of each of the lower portions of scored lines 74C is a pair of intersecting scored lines 74A and 74B defining an acute type angle.--The-intersecting scored lines 73A and 73B define indents 73 inthe upper portions of the trough sides and the intersecting scored lines 74A and 74B define indents 74 in the lower portions thereof, as shown throughout the drawings in the figures illustrating the trough-strips. The
trough sides, with the indents 73 and 74 therein, defined by the scored lines 73A, 73B, 73C, 74A, 74B and 74C, are provided when the surplus material, defined by these last-stated scored lines and the adjacent outer edges of the trough-strip is removed, as shown in Figs. 3, 6 and ll.
In any construction of the dispenser, the trough-strip may be adapted to provide a stamped-out trough, as when die-cut, and the trough sides may be provided in rounded form, as shown in Figs. 5 and 13.
Also associated with both improved embodiments of the dispenser is a pair of scored inverted hanging tabs 82 extending outwardly at the top and bottom of the rear wall 83 of slide-on cover to hang either of the improved embodiments. In this type of hanging dispenser, the rear wall 83 of the slide-on cover is provided thereon with a scored fold line 86 spaced inwardly from each of the shorter ends thereof, in parallelism therewith and disposed medially of the longer sides thereof, as shown in Fig. 17. Extending outwardly toward each of the shorter ends of the slide-on cover and terminating at the opposite ends of each of the scored fold lines 86 is a pair of intersecting scored curved lines 86A, the vertex of which is spaced medially of the longer edges of the slide-on cover. Each scored fold line 86 and a pair of the intersecting scored curved lines 86A defines an integrally hinged hanging tab the lower edge of the cover aperture and to be disposed parallel with and adjacent to the inside lower portion of the front wall of the slide-on cover 50, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, and forming an end portion which is adapted to extend horizontally at a right angle from the portion 55 to provide a supporting flap 56, as shown in Fig. 8. The upper edge 57 of the cover aperture 51 is adapted to extend upwardly at the center portion thereof to define an arched contour therein, as shown in Fig. 2, to provide a substantial supporting flap 56. With the portion 55 and the supporting flap 56 being disposed thusly and the hereinbefore described inverted hanging tabs 82 positioned as shown in Fig. 17, the slide-on cover 50 is ready for use in the assembly of the dispenser.
With the slide-on cover 50 so prepared, it is adapted to receive therein the tray 53 which is inserted almost to the lower edge of the cover aperture 51. With the tray 53 so disposed, the indents 73 of the folded troughstrip are adapted to pocket therein the end portions of the arched contour edge 57. With the tray 53 still retained in the last-stated position, the indents 74 are adapted to facilitate disposing the trough sides thereinbetween the side walls of the tray 53 and those of the slide-on cover 50, and the trough base 75 is adapted to be inserted into the cover aperture 51. The tray 53 is then adapted to be slidably moved downwardly, which downward movement vertically positions the trough base 75 parallel with and adjacent to portion 55. This downward movement provides for the tray 53 to be partly extended below the 82. When each pair of intersecting scored curved lines 86A is opened and the portion defined within the said lines 86A is folded inwardly on the scored fold line 86, an inverted integrally hinged hanging tab 82 is provided. Each inverted hanging tab 82 is adapted to be disposed parallel with and adjacent to the inside rear wall 83 to provide an end portion 84 to extend outwardly from each end of the slide-on cover to secure the dispenser in an -unswerving position on a wall, or the like. To facilitate hanging of the dispenser on a nail, or the like, each end portion 84 is provided therein with a small scored circle knock-out portion 85, as shown in Fig. 17. In the assembly of each embodiment of the dispenser, these inverted hanging tabs 82 are adapted to be positioned prior to the insertion of the tray into the slide-on cover.
The first improved embodiment of the dispenser, as shown in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive, provides a slide-on cover 50 having the lower front portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 1, adapted to be folded upon itself above the lower edge of the cover aperture 51 and to be positioned therein in its folded form just above the bottom edge of the slide-on cover 50, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the slide-on cover 50, as shown in Figs. 1 and 7, has a scored fold line 54 provided thereon which extends transversely across the lower front portion and terminates at the opposite sides thereof, being disposed thereon between the upper and lower edges of the lower front portion and in parallelism therewith and disposed thereon more nearly adjacent to the lower edge thereof. The lower front portion is adapted to fold upon itselfon the scored fold line 54, forming a portion 55 which is adapted to extend vertically downwardly from bottom edge of the slide-on cover 50. With the lower portion of the tray 53 extending thusly, the supporting flap 56 is adapted to be inserted thereinbetween the matches and the bottom 52 of the tray 53 to serve the means of a match guard, as shown in Fig. 8, to prevent the matches therein from falling out at the lower front edge of the dispenser. The tray 53, with the supporting flap 56 inserted therein, is then adapted to be slidably reinserted into the slide-on cover 50. v
In this structure, the tray 53 is adapted to retain the two portions 55 and 75 in their respective positions by the front edges of the side walls of the tray 53 compressing against these last-stated portions. The indents 73, in combination with the tray 53 and the trough base 75 so disposed, are adapted to maintain the folded trough-strip in an outwardly projecting fixed position, as shown in Fig. 8. Y j
The tray 53 is adapted tobe retained within the slideon cover 50 by the insertion into the dispenser of extra material, that is, by the material of the portion 55, the supporting flap 56, the inwardly positioned portions of the trough sides and the trough base 75, all of which serve to compress therein and between the walls of the tray 53 and those of the slide-on cover 50. j
It will be noted that with the portion 55 and the trough base 75 vertically disposed and the supporting flap 56 horizontally disposed, the tray 53 is adapted to be slidably positioned within the slide-on cover 50 with the bottom 52 disposed just above the bottom edge of the slideon cover 50, as shown in Fig. 8.
To assemble the first embodiment, the inverted hanging tabs 82 and the lower front portion of the slide-on 50 are positioned for use as stated hereinbefore. The tray 53 is then inserted into the slide-on cover 50 almost'to the lower edge of the cover aperture 51 and the trough sides of the folded trough-strip are inserted thereinbetween the side walls of the tray 53 and those of the slideon cover 50 withthe indents 73 pocketing therein the end portions of edge 57. The trough base 75 is then inserted into the cover aperture 51 and thereafter the tray 53 is pushed down, compressing the front edges of the side walls of the tray 53 against both the portion 55 and the trough base 75. The tray 53 is then pushed downwardly so that the lower portion thereof extends below the bottom edge of the slide-0n cover 50 and the supportingfiap 56 is inserted thereinbetween thematches and the bottom 52 of the tray 53. The tray 53 is then pushed back up into the slide-on cover 50 and the assembled dispenser is ready to be hung up for use.
In the first improved embodiment, both the slide-on cover, as shown in Fig. 7, and the trough-strip, as shown in Fig. 6, may be provided by the individual user. In the construction of this type of dispenser, the lower front portion of the slide-on cover is devised so as to provide an area which is defined by the guide lines 57A to 57F, inclusive, as shown in Fig. 7. The portion 55 and the supporting flap 56 are provided by being formed with-in the area stated. The trough may be provided when formed along the guide lines 73A, 73B, 73C, 74A, 74B and 740, as shown in Fig. 6. in this structure, the angular form of the trough sides facilitate the providing of the trough. The slide-on cover and the folded troughstrip are then assembled with the tray, as stated hereinbefore.
The second improved embodiment of the dispenser, as shown in Figs. 9 to 16, inclusive, provides a slide-on cover 58 having the lower front portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 9, adapted to provide a flexible integrally hinged lid 64 with a center tab 76. The lid 64 is adapted to fold outwardly from the cover aperture 62 along the transverse scored fold line 59 and the center tab 70 is adapted to fold on the transverse scored fold line 72 in a plane distinct from that of the lid 64, as shown in Fi 14.
in this construction the lower front portion of the slide-on cover 58 is provided thereon with a scored fold line 59, as shown in Fig. 9, extending transversely across and terminating at the opposite sides thereof. Extending transversely across the lower front portion and disposed inwardly from the bottom front edge 62 of the slide-on cover 58 is a scored line 60, as shown in Fig. 9. Disposed thereon between the transverse scored fold line 59 and the transverse scored line 60 is a pair of scored lines 61, as shown in Fig. 9, which are disposed thereon in alignment with the longer side edges of the front wall of the slide-on cover 58. Between the transverse scored fold line 59 and the transverse scored line 60 is a pair of transverse scored lines 63, as shown in Fig. 9, which extend at a right angle from the scored side edge lines 61, being spaced more nearly to the transverse scored line 60 and terminating within the medial area of the lower front portion.
The pair of side edge scored lines 61, the transverse scored fold line 59 and the pair of transverse scored lines 63, as shown in Fig. 9, are adapted to define a lid 64, as shown in Fig. 14. The pair of transverse scored lines 63 are adapted to define the end portions of the front edge of the lid 64, as shown in Fig. 9. The scored side edge lines 61 extend upwardly beyond the transverse scored fold line 59 to define lid extensions 61A, as shown in Figs. 14 and 16, to provide, when opened, for the lid 64 to be flexible.
Extending downwardly from the ends of the pair of transverse scored lines 63 is a pair of scored lines 65, as shown in Fig. 14, to define a short-shank portion 66, as shown in Fig. 14. Extending outwardly from the scored lines 65 is a pair of scored lines 67, as shown in Fig. 9, and extending downwardly from the scored lines 67 to the center portion of the transverse scored line 60 is a pair of curved scored lines 68, as shown in Fig. 9. The scored lines 67 and the curved scored lines 68 define the shoulders 69 at the opposite ends of the shortshank portion 66, as shown in Fig. 14. The center portion of the transverse scored line 60 therebetween the curved scored lines 68 defines the front edge of a tab 70, as shown in Fig. 9. The center portion therebetween the shank portion 66 and the transverse scored line 68 defines the center portion 71, as shown in Fig. 9, of the tab 70, as shown in Fig. 14. At the base of the shank portion 66, a transverse scored fold line 72 is provided 6 in alignment with the front edge of the lid 64, asshown inFig.14.
To convert the slide-on cover 58 for use as a component part of the dispenser, all of the last-stated scored lines are adapted to be opened to provide the lid 64 with its center tab 70, as shown in Fig. 14, when the surplus material, defined by the lower portions of scored side lines 61, the end portions of scored line 60 and the scored lines 63, 65, 67 and 68, as shown in Fig. 9, is removed. The lid 64 thus extends outwardly from the cover aperture 62 and downwardly from the scored fold line 59 and the center tab 70 is folded on the scored fold line 72. In this condition, the slide-on cover 58 with the hereinbefore described inverted hanging tabs 82 positioned as shown in Fig. 17 is ready for use in the assembly of the dispenser.
The features of the improved trough sides described hereinbefore as associated with both of the improved embodiments of the dispenser are incorporated with those in the trough-strip of the second embodiment which-is also provided with a center notch '76 in the trough front thereof and a base flap 78 extending from the lower edge of the trough base 75, as shown in Figs, 11, 12 and 13.
Hence, this trough front is provided thereon with a medially disposed scored line 76A which is in parallelism with and spaced inwardly from the adjacent top edge thereof. At the opposite ends of the scored line 76A are scored curved lines 768 extending inwardly toward the center portion therebetween the scored line 76A and the adjacent top edge and terminating at the adjacent top edge thereof to define a pair of scored projecting tabs 77, as shown in Fig. 11. The scored line 76A and the scored lines 76B are adapted to define a center notch 76 which is provided when the surplus material, defined by the adjacent top edge, the scored line 76A and the scored curved lines 76B is removed, as shown in Figs. 11, 12 and 13.
This trough-strip is also provided thereon with a scored fold line 79 which is disposed medially to the lower portions of the trough sides and spaced inwardly from and parallel with the lower adjacent edge. At the opposite ends of the scored fold line 79 are scored lines 74A which are elongated in this construction to extend to and terminate at the adjacent lower edge, as shown in Fig. 11. The scored fold line 79 and the elongated scored lines 74A are adapted to define a base flap 78, as shown in Fig. 11. The base flap 78 is provided when the scored lines 74A are opened and the base flap 78 is folded on the scored fold line 79 to extend horizontally from the vertically disposed trough base 75, as shown in Fig. 12.
In the second improved embodiment wherein the inverted hanging tabs 82 and the lid 64 with its center tab 70 of the slide-on cover 58 are positioned for use as stated hereinbefore, the slide-on cover 58 is adapted to receive therein the tray which is inserted almost to the lower edge of the cover aperture 62. With the tray 88 so disposed, the indents 73 of the folded trough-strip are adapted to engage the lid extensions 61A. With the tray 80 still retained in the last-stated position, the .indents 74 are adapted to facilitate disposing the trough sides thereinbetween the side walls of the tray 30 and those of the slide on cover 58, and the trough base 75 is adapted to be inserted into the cover aperture 62. The tray is then adapted to be slidably moved downwardly, which downward movement vertically disposes the trough base 75 parallel with and adjacent to the inside front wall of the slide-on cover 58. This downward movement provides for the tray 80 to be partly extended below the bottom edge of the slide-on cover 58. With the lower portion of the tray 80 extending thusly, the base flap 78 is adapted to be inserted thereinbetween the matches and the bottom 81 of the tray 80 to serve the means of a match guard, as shown in Fig. 15, to prevent the matches therein from falling out at the lower front edge of the dispenser. The tr y 80, with the base flap 78 inserted therein, is then adapted to be slidably reinserted into the slide-on cover 58. The lid 64 is adapted to be lowered to provide for enclosure of the contents and for the shortshank 66 of the center tab 70 to engage the center notch 76 so that the projecting tabs 77 releasably retain the lid 64 in a closed position.
In this structure, the tray 80 is adapted to retain the trough base 75 in its position by the front edges of the side walls of the tray 80 compressing against it. The indents 73, in combination with the tray 80 and the trough base 75 so disposed, are adapted to maintain the trough in an outwardly projecting fixed position, as shown in Fig. 15.
Also, in this structure, the tray 80 is adapted to be retained within the slide-on cover 58 by the insertion into the dispenser of extra material, that is, by the material of the trough base 75, the base flap 78 and the inwardly positioned portions of the trough sides, all of which serve to compress therein and between the walls of the tray 80 and those of the slide-on cover 58.
It will be noted that with the trough base 75 vertically disposed and the base flap 78 horizontally disposed the tray 80 is adapted to be slidably positioned within the slide-on cover 58 with the bottom 81 disposed just above the bottom edge of the slide-on cover 58, as shown in Fig. 15.
The lid extensions 61A are adapted to provide the hinged lid 64 to be flexibly disposed within the top area of the outwardly projecting trough, as shown in Fig. 16, and to provide for the edges of the lid 64 to abut the inside walls thereof, as shown in Fig. 16. The short shank 66 of the center tab 7 is adapted to determine the extent to which the lid 64 is pressed down into the top area of the trough. The center notch 76 is adapted to releasably receive the center tab 70 and the projecting tabs 77 are adapted to serve the means for the center notch 76 to snugly engage the short-shank 66 of the center tab 70, as shown in Fig. 16.
The scored fold line 79, in combination with the lid extensions 61a, provides for the flexible integrally hinged lid 64 to be movably disposed to a raised position to have access to-the contents in the outwardly projecting trough, or to a lowered position within the top area of the trough to enclose the contents therein when the dispenser is not in use, as shown in Fig. 16.
To assemble the second embodiment, the inverted hanging tabs 82, the lid 64 with the center tab 70 of the slide-on cover 58 and the folded trough-strip are positioned as stated hereinbefore. The tray 80 is then inserted into the slide-on cover 58 almost to the lower edge of the cover aperture 62 and the trough sides of the folded trough-strip are inserted thereinbetween the side walls of the tray 80 and those of the slide-on cover 58 with the indents 73 engaging the lid extensions 61A. The trough base 75 with its base flap 78 is then inserted into the cover aperture 62 and thereafter the tray 80 is pushed down, compressing the front edges of the side walls of the tray 80 against the trough base 75. The tray 80 is then pushed downwardly so that the lower portion thereof extends below the bottom edge of the slide-on cover 58 and the base flap 78 is inserted thereinbetween the matches and the bottom 81 of the tray 80. The tray 80 is then pushed back up into the slide-on cover 58. The
8 lid 64 is then lowered so that the shank portion 66 of the center tab engages the center notch 76 and the dispenser is ready to be hung up for use. i
The improved embodiments hereinabove described are typical of the modifications which may be provided in the structure of this vertically disposed apertured dispenser with a trough arranged to extend therefrom. Therefore, inasmuch as further feasible changes and diversified embodiments may be made within the scope of this invention, neither the description hereinabove, nor the drawings relative thereto, are to be construed as restrictive, but are merely illustrative of the modifications which may be made.
Having described the improved embodiments of my invention, what I claim as new is:
l. A match box adapted to be converted into a dispenser, comprising an open-ended slide-on cover of rectangular cross section having front, back and side walls, an open-top tray, and a match-retaining strip adapted to form a trough, said cover having its front wall scored to define a portion thereof adapted to be separated from the front wall and folded away from the front wall on a fold line extending transversely across the front wall to provide an opening in the front wall, said strip having two transverse fold lines spaced a distance corresponding to the width of the box, a longitudinal fold line extending between said two transverse fold lines defining a main trough wall and a bottom flap for the main trough wall, portions of the strip outward of the transverse fold lines being scored for forming trough side flaps at the ends of the main trough wall with these side fiaps having bottom edges extending from the ends of said longitudinal fold line at an acute angle to the end edges of said bottom flap, and having upper edges provided with acute-angled indents, the side flaps being adapted to be inserted in the opening made in the front wall of the box and to have the acute-angled indents hooked to the front wall, and the bottom flap being adapted to lie fiat against the inside of the front wall of the box, the front wall of the cover being scored in such manner that the said portion of the front wall is foldable outward from the box on a transverse fold line at the top of the said opening in the front wall and is adapted to form a lid for the trough.
2. A match box as set forth in claim 1 wherein the bottom flap of the trough has an end-to-end score line on which said flap may be folded to form a match guard flap portion adapted to be tucked between the bottom end of the tray and the matches in the tray.
3. A match box as set forth in claim 1 wherein the front wall of the cover is scored in such manner that the lid has a locking tab at its outer edge, and wherein the strip is scored so that the trough has a notch in the upper part of its main wall for accepting the tab.
