O. J. TERIAULT.
, NEGKTIE FASTENER.
(No Model.)
No. 289,175. Patented Nov. 27, 1883.

ATEN'r FFICE.
OG'IAVE J. TERIAULT, or RUTLANI), VERMONT.
NECKTIE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,175, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed September 17, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OOTAVE J. TERIAULT, of Rutland, in the county of Butland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Necktie-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention is an improvement in retainers forcravats, neckties, and the like. As is well-known, the cravat or tie, when worn with certain styles of collars-such as the stand-up-h'as a constant tendency to rise out of its proper position onto the coat-collar. To obviate this difficu /ty by a simple and effective device is the object of my invention. I aim to provide a device which can be easily and securely attached to the shank of the ordinary collarbutton and serve to keep the era-vat or tie in place.
To this end my invention consists of a small plate, preferably of metal, provided with a hooked and pivoted clasp adapted to encircle the shank of the collar-button; further, in pins secured to the plate, whereby the cravat is held securely; further, in special details of construction, as fully explained hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the device in place upon the shank of the collar-button. Fig. 2 is a side view. and Fig. 3 shows a back view.
In the drawings, A represents a. small plate of metal or other suitable substance. It may be of any desired form, and is provided at its lower end with an upturned portionaorw lip, c. The lip a. is turned up on the rear side of the plate A, and is partly disconnected from said plate, forming thereby a slot, 1, hereinafter referred to. The plate A, at its upper edge, is wider, and is formed with a notch or recess, 6, adapted in size and shape to receive and hold the shank of the collar-button. It
will be observed that the recess or notch is slightly narrower at its mouth than it is at the point marked 2,- so that when the retainer is in place a slight force is required to detach it from the button. In some cases this fastening might be sufficient; but to make it more complete and more secure I employ means shown in Fig. 3. On the back side of the plate, and at about the center thereof, is pivoted a clasp, B. This clasp is in the form of a hooked lever, the shorter arm being hooked, as shown, and adapted, when in position to entirely close the mouth of the notch, forming a nearly circular hole. The long arm (Z of the lever extends down through the slot 1, and,
turns forward slightly, to be within easy reach of the finger or hand. Projecting from the plate on the front side are two sharp pins, 6 e, which extend outwardly and downwardly, for the purpose of engaging with the cravat.
In applying the device, the plate is pushed up until the shank of the button is in place within the notch. The upturned lip a then being under the end of the collar, the lever arm (I is then swung into the slot 1, which throws the clasp into place, completely encircling the shank of the button. By this arrangement a very secure fastening is made, the lip a not only serving to hold the lever-arm d, but also hooking up under the end of the collar, thereby giving additional security to the fastening.
W hat I claim is- 1. A cravat-retainer consisting of a plate provided with pins to hold the cravat, a notch in the upper edge of said plate to receive the shank of thecollar-bntton. and a clasp pivoted to the plate and adapted to retain the shank of the collar-button in the notch, all arranged s bstantially as described, and for the purpose setforth.
2. In a cravat-retainer, the combination of a plate, A, projecting pins 0 e, notch or recess b, pivoted clasp B, and lip a, all substantially as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' OGTAVE J. TERIAULT.
