Description

{No ModeL) J. o. PETM'ECKY. CLEANER EUR GUN BARRELS.
No. 289,132. Patented Nov. 27, 1883.
UNITED IStarts JOSEPH o. rnrtrncir,
OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
CLEANER For: GUN-BARRELS.
srnorrrcnfrron forming part of Letters Patent No.1289,132, dated November 27, 1883. Application filed September 26, v1883. (No model.)
. in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaners for Gun-Barrels; and I do hereby deolare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use the same. l f.
My invention is an improvement. in guneleanin g implements.
Itconsists oi' a brush or cleaner formed in the main of spring metal, (preferably of brass) and provided with bristles beveledy at their free ends, lso set in suitable holding parts as that when unconfned said bristles will move outward from a 'common axis and bear against the inner surface of a gun-barrel when placed wit-hin the same. It consists, also, of a metallic cylindrical clasp provided at one end with flanges adapted to lit over the body and bristles ofnsaid' cleaner to hold Athe latter to a conned yposi' tion while the-brush or cleaner is being placed in the barrel of a gun to be cleaned.
In fmy drawings, Figure 1 'is an elevation of the cleaner with the bristlegs in a normal position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device complete and placed within the barrel of a gun..4 Fig. 3 shows a modiiication of the cleaner.
Similar reference-letters indicate like parts in all of the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A is the cleaner, formed of cylindrical tubing tempered to a springftemper and out radially to form bristles a, beveled at their' lower or free ends to' form cutting-edges. The bristlesa are interposed andl secured between the socket -cylinder B.
and an encirclingband, G.` A metallic cylinder, D, having an outer diameter equal to the gun-barrel with which it is to be used, has an inner flange, b, and an outer one, c, and serves as a jacket or clasp to confine the bristles a while the cleaner is being placed in the muzzle of the barrel. Then in position in the barrel, the inner lange of the clasp D bears upon the band C, 4While the outer iange',c,
'surface of said barrel.
rests upon the end of the gun-barrel.
In operating the cleaner or brush after the devicel is placed inthe barrel, the said brush A is forced outside of the cylindrical clasp until the bristles c spring against the inner The cleaner is novir forced inward, and then moved back and forward, in the usual Way, t0 free the entire barrel of lead, caked powder, and other accumulated refuse matter. j Y Arr-important point in my vcleaner is the beveling of the freeends of the bristles al, so that a chisel-edge may be presented constantly tothe inner surface of the barrel While the said cleaner is atwvork.V Y
v Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- 1. A gun-cleaner consisting of two metallic tubes, placed one inside the other and iirmly united, and a circle of spring-Scrapers having one end inserted between the tubes and held there.
2. A gun cleaner provided with springscrapers formed to fit the interior of the gunbarrel, in combination with a sheath or case Y removably placed thereon, said sheath or case being providedwith a ledge on its upper end, which rests on-the outer or muzzle end of the gunbarrel and holds the sheath `while the cleaner is passed down the barrel.
3. A gun-cleaner having spring-Scrapers for I cleaning the inside of the barrel, and provided with an extension near its upper end, in combination with a sheath or case provided With an exterior ledge for resting on the muzzle of the gun and an interior ledge for engagement with the extension on the cleaner, whereby the sheath is held at the muzzle of the gun while the cleaner is thrust into the barrel, and both cleaner and sheath are removed together, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
' Josnrn o. PETMEGKY.
