To 0:25 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'HARRY R. LAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Leon, in the county of Decatur and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Barrel Cleaners; and I do deciare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its general object to provide a cheap and simple device adapted to effectually prevent the formation of rust in gun barrels, and one which may be readily applied to and removed from'a gun barrel when desired.
With the foregoing ends in view the invention will be fully understood from the followingdescription and claim when taken in. connection with the annexed drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a diametrical sectional View illustratin'gmy improved device in its operative position within-a gun-barrel; and Fig. 2 isa perspective view, partly broken away, of the device'removed from the gun-barrel.
- Referring by letter to the said drawingsze A, indicates a portionof a gun barrel of the usualiorm; andB, indicates the receptacle of my improved device which is forme'dof zinc for a purpose presently described, and comprises the cylindrical portion a, designedto enter 7 and rest in a gun barrel as shown in Fig. 1, I and the cap I), which serves to close the outer end ot'the portion a, and also serves to close the outer end of the gun barrel when the device is in operation and to prevent the'device from entering too far into the same. 'lhe receptacle A, is placed in the gun barrel as shown in Fig. 1, so as to exclude air and moisture therefrom, and when said receptacle is so placed it will be observed that the chemical action of the zinc will prevent oxidization or corrosion of the metal on the inside of the gun barrel, which is a desideratuni.
In order to enable the device to gather to itself any moisture which maybe in thegun barrel when it is placed therein,I charge the receptacle absorbent material as indicated by O. This cotton, or absorbent material, will, as stated, gather all of the moisture in the gun barrel to itself and will serve in conjunction with the zinc forming the receptacle 1%, to effectually prevent oxidization or corrosion of the metal forming the barrel.
My improved device is, as will be readily seen, very cheap and compact, and it will therefore beseen that in addition to the functions above mentioned, it may be made to serve as a stopper to exclude moisture and foreign substance from a gun barrel, and when it is desired to use the gun, said stepper may be conveniently carried in the pocket of the gunners jacket.
In practice the shell or' receptacle will be split longitudinally so as to allow the same to expand and fit the barrel tightly.
Having described my invention, what I claim is--- 1 As an improvedarticle of manufacture, the device described, comprising essentially the receptacle formed of zinc and having the cylindrical portion a, adapted to be placed in the outer end of a gun barrel, and the cap I), at the outer end of the cylindrical portion adapted to bear against the end of the gun barrel so as to close the same and hold the device in position, and absorbent material C, arranged in the cylindrical portion of the re ceptacle, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
