An object of the present invention'is to provide a clothes drying appliance which lends itself to exposing clothes to be dried or aired to the sun and wind and enables the user thereof to rapidly and easily retract the clothes to a protected position away from the action of the elements out of the sun and wind when desired without detachment of the clothes from their support.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a clothes, drying appliance which lends itself to attachment to a wall at the end of a balcony in such position that the clothes hung thereon are relatively inconspicuous, one which when used on a balcony facing an inner court obviates the use of unsightly clothes lines stretched across the court, and one which may be retracted to an inconspicuous position against the wall when not in use.
I A further object of the present invention is to provide a. clothes. drying appliance which is simple in structure, sturdy in construction and economical to manufacture and assemble, and one which is highly effective in action.

Referring in greater detail to the drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the clothes drying appliance according to the present invention comprises a circular bracket having spaced holes therethrough for receiving screws 11 for attachment, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, to a wall surface, the latter being designated by the reference 12.
A bar 13 projects from the face of the bracket 10 remote from the wall 12 and is curved so that its free end is beyond the edge of the wall and is spaced from the bracket 10. The free end of the bar 13 is flattened and made circular in shape to provide a vertically disposed support 14. A horizontally disposed tunnel member is positioned on the side of the support 14 remote from the bracket 10 land is connected, Figure 3, to the support 14 for movement from the horizontal position shown in Figure l to a vertical position shown in Figure 2. The tunnel member 15 has a circular backing plate member 16 attached thereto connecting it to the support 14 for the aforesaid movement, the backing plate 16 having a stud bolt 17 projecting therefrom and received in a hole 48 provided in the support 14. A spring 18 is circum- Patented June 9, 1959 An inverted U-shaped hanger 22 is positioned so that v the bight 23 extends through the tunnel member 15 with the legs 24 and 25 vertically disposed and exteriorly of the tunnel member 15. A vertically disposed pair of rollers 26, each freely rotatable about a horizontally disposed shaft 27, is positioned within the tunnel member -15 inwardly of each end of the latter with the ends of each shaft 27 journaled in the walls 50 and 52 of the tunnel member 15. The rollers 26 connect the bight of the hanger 22 to the tunnel member 15 for longitudinal 1 back and forth movement.
A clothes supporting'element 28 extends between and is carried by the free ends of the legs 24 and 25 of the hanger 22, the element 28 being relatively thin and stiff rod in a preferred form.
Releasable interengaging locking means is provided on the tunnel member 15 and on the support 14 and is operable to hold the tunnel member 15 in a horizontal position. This means specifically consists in a semi-cylindrical lug 29 positioned transversely of and formed integrally with the periphery of the support 14 and another semicylindrical lug 31 positioned transversely of and formed integrally with the periphery of the plate member 16, the lug 31 having a portion extending over the periphery of the support 14 as shown in Figure l. A closed loop element 32 has one end connected in an eye formation formed on the upper edge of the tunnel member 15 as indicated at 33 in Figure l, the loop element 32 embracingly receiving both of the lugs 29 and 31.
Releasable locking means is carried by the tunnel member 15 and is engageable with the hanger 22, on the bight of the latter, for holding the hanger bight 23in any position of its longitudinal movement. Specifically this releasable locking means consists in a wing bolt 34 threadedly engaged in a threaded aperture provided in the face of the tunnel member 15 opposite to the support 14, the wing bolt 34 being threadably movable into and out of engagement with an adjacent portion of the bight 23 of the hanger 22 to releasably lock the same in any direction to which the hanger 22 is adjusted.
In Figure 5 is shown a modified form of the present invention in which a support 35 is provided with a recess 54 in which is slidably mounted a latch bolt 36 biased outwardly therefrom by a spring 37, the latch bolt 36 having a handle 38 exteriorly of the support 35 for man ual manipulation thereof. The free end of the latch bolt 36 is seatable within a circular recess 56 provided in a plate member 39 having a stud bolt 41 projecting therefrom and received in an aperture 58 provided in the support 35, and in an aligned aperture 6 provided in the plate 39. The plate 39 supports a tunnel member 42 having therein rollers 43 mounted upon transversely disposed shafts 44 which have their ends journaled in the walls of the tunnel member 42. The tunnel member 42 carries for longitudinal movement therethrough a hanger 45 releasably lockable in position by another wing bolt 46. The hanger 45 supports below it another clothes supporting element identical with the element 28 for support of clothes thereon.
In use, clothes may be hung upon the element 28 and the hanger 22 may be extended outwardly from the wall 12 of a building into the air and sunshine for purpose of drying and airing the clothes hung on the element 28. The loop element 32 securely holds the tunnel member 15 in the horizontal position and the wing bolt 34 secures the bight 23 of the hanger- 22 inany position of longitudinal movement through thetunnel member 15. When it is desired to withdraw the clothes hung on the element 28i'fromgthe-air and sunshine, or possibly from rain, it isnnerely necessary to loosen the wing bolt 34: and to draw thehanger 22 toa retracted position. The clothes hung on the element 28 may be removed or they may be; left thereon andthe loopelement 32 disengaged from the lugs 29 and 31 and the tunnel member 15 swung from the horizontal position as shown in Figure 1 to the vertical position shown in Figure 2. The clothes may be left upon the element 28 if desired, and the user thereof may again swing thetunnel member 15 to the horizontal position and the hanger 22 to the extended position to complete the'airing and drying of the clothes hung upon the element 28.
What isclaimed is:
1. A clothes drying appliance comprising a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall, a bar projecting from said bracket and having'a free end spaced therefrom, a support carried by the free end of said bar, a horizontallydisposed tunnel member positioned on the side of said support remote from said bracket and pivotally connected-tosaid support for movement from the horizontal position to a vertical position, an inverted U-shaped hanger positioned so that the'bight extends through said tunnel member with the legs vertically disposed and exteriorly of said tunnel member, and having the bight slidably connected to said tunnel member for longitudinal back and forth movement, a clothes supporting element extending between and carried by the free ends of said legsof said hanger, and releasable interengaging means on said tunnelmember and on said support operable to hold said tunnel member in the horizontal position.
2. A clothes drying appliance comprising a bracket adapted to be attached to a wall, a bar projecting from said bracket and having a-free end spaced therefrom, a support carried by thefree end of said bar, a horizontally disposed tunnel member positioned on the side of saidsupport remote from said bracket and pivotally connected to said support [for movement from the horizontal position to a vertical position, an inverted U-shaped hanger positioned so that the bight extends through said tunnel member with the legs. verticallydisposed and. exteriorly of said tunnel member, and having the bight slidably connected to said tunnel member for longitudinal back and forth movement, a clothes supporting element extending between and carried by the free ends of said legs of said hanger, releasable interengaging means on said tunnel member and on saidsupport operable to hold said tunnel member in the horizontal position, and spring means operatively connected to said tunnel-member for biasing ittoward saidsupport.
3. A clothes drying appliance comprising a bracket adapted tobe attached to a wall, a: bar projecting from said bracket and having a tree .end spaced therefrom, a support carried by the free end of said bar, a horizontally disposed tunnel member positioned on the side of said support remote from said bracket and pivotally connected to said support for movement from the horizontal position: to. a vertical position, an inverted U-shaped hanger positioned so that the bight extends through said tunnel member with'th'elegs disposed'exteriorly of said tunnel member and-having the bight slidably connected" to saidtunnel member for longitudinal-back and 'forthmovement, a clothes'supporting element extending betweenand carried by the'free ends of said legs of said hanger, releasable interengaging means on 'said tunnelmember and on said support operable to'hold said tunnel member in the horizontal position, and releasable-locking means carried by said tunnel member and engageable with said hanger-bight for holding said hanger bight in any position of its longitudinal movement;
