ATOMIZERS, IN PARTICULAR PERFUME ATOMIZEJRS May 26, 1959 Filed March 1. 1957 Patented May 26, 1959 ATOMIZERS, IN PARTICULAR PERFUME ATOMIZERS Ren Fedit, Paris, France, assignor to Les Vaporisateurs Marcel Frank S.A., Paris, France, a society of France Application March 1, 1957, Serial No. 643,313
Claims priority, application France May 2, 1956 1 Claim. (Cl. 239-308) The present invention relates to atomizers, and in particular perfume atomizers, making use of a gas pressure supplied from a separate reservoir for spraying the desired substance (perfume).
It is an object of my invention to provide an atomizer unit of this kind in which replacement of the reservoir of gas under pressure, when exhausted, is easy and can be performed by anybody in any circumstances.
Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment of my invention, with reference to the appended drawing, given by way of example and which is an axial sectional view of a perfume atomizer made according to my invention.
The atomizer shown by the drawing includes a bottle 1 containing a reserve of the substance to be atomized, that is to say of perfume 2.
This bottle 1 is provided with a removable cap upon which must be fixed in a removable manner a reservoir or cartridge 3 containing a gas under pressure, preferably a liquified gas and in particular freon, that is to say dichlordifiuormethane.
In order to fit cap 5 on container 1, said cap is provided, at the bottom part thereof, with a threaded extension 5a adapted to be screwed in a threaded part 6 secured at 7 in fluid tight fashion upon the neck of bottle 1, a packing joint 8 being provided to prevent leaks between cap 5 and bottle 1.
Cap 5 further includes:
On the one hand, at the bottom part thereof and on the inside of extension 5a, a tubular extension for the fixation of reservoir 3 thereon,
And on the other hand, means for atomizing substance 2, that is to say a valve 9, a push-piece 10 to control this valve and a spraying nozzle 11 opening laterally from cap 5.
The extension serving to the removable fixation of reservoir 3 is constituted by a threaded cylinder 12 in which the threaded neck 3a of resrevoir 3 is screwed.
Advantageously, bottle 1 and reservoir 3 are made of a transparent material or at least a translucent material, such for instance as glass, crystal or the like, so that it is possible to see at any time the level of the liquid, both in bottle 1 and in reservoir 3.
Valve 9 is mounted, coaxially with the cylindrical extension 12, opposite neck 3a in the following manner:
In a cylindrical recess 13 provided in cap 5 above an extension 12 and coaxial therewith, there is provided an annular piece 14 having, formed therein, an axial passage 14a through which the stem 9a of valve 9 extends with a substantial play.
To the under face of this annular piece 14 there is secured, by mechanical engagement and/ or by glueing, a ng joint 15 made of rubber, polyethylene or an us substance, which projects laterally beyond the p f ph ry of part 14, the outer diameter of said joint 14 being substantially equal to the inner diameter of cylindrical extension 12. Thus,- this element 15 acts both as a seat for valve 9 and as a packing element interposed between the edge of the neck 3a of reservoir Sand a peripheral shoulder 5b of cap 5.
In the upper face of piece 14 and around the opening 14a thereof, there is provided a cup-shaped recess 14b which communicates with recess 13 through a passage 14c provided in part 14.
Push-piece 10 carries an axial tube 10a slidable through a cylindrical holeSc provided in the top wall of cap 5. The stem 9a of valve 9 is screwed in said tube 10a. A resilient annular member or diaphragm 17 is held betweenthe end of tube 10m and a flange 16 integral with stem 9a. The peripheral portion of said member 17 is caught between the circular edge of the cup-shaped recess 14b of part 14 and the top Wall of cap 5. A spring 18, coaxially surrounding tube 10a, is compressed between the top face of cap 5 and the. top Wall of push-piece 10. This spring urges valve 9 toward its closing position.
When the neck 3a of reservoir 3 is screwed in the extension 12 of cap 5, packing joint 15 is tightly applied against shoulder 5b and the top edge of part 14 applies member 17 against the top wall of cap 5.
Diaphragm 17, made for instance of rubber, prevents any leakage through hole 5c, while permitting the opening of valve 9 when the stem 9a thereof is pushed downwardly, the cup-shaped recess 14b provided in part 14 permitting the necessary deformation of said element 17.
Spraying nozzle 11 is fitted in a recess 5d of cap 5 and this nozzle 11 is in communication with recess 13. A suction conduit 11a, opening laterally into nozzle 11, communicates with the inside of bottle 1 through a tube 1920 which extends downwardly into bottle 1 to a small distance from the bottom thereof. The portion 19 of this tube is rigid whereas the portion 20- thereof is flexible. Cap 5 is provided with an air inlet 21 opening into bottle 1.
With the arrangement as above described, the atomizer unit can easly be taken to pieces, for instance to permit of cleaning and/or replacing packing joints 15 and 17.
The neck 3a of reservoir 3 has its opening closed by a puncturable seal 22 and valve 9 is provided with a pointed end 23 capable of puncturing said seal when push-piece 10 is operated for the first time after reservoir 3 has been mounted on cap 5.
Every time push-piece 10 is depressed, it opens valve 9 and the gas from reservoir 3 can flow to the outside through the space between stem 9a and the wall of passage 1411, the cup-shaped recess 14b of valve 14, passage 14c and nozzle 11. When passing through said nozzle, the gas exerts a suction on the perfume 2 through tubes 20--19-11a, and this perfume is atomized and forms a spray of the aerosol type.
Of course, the substance contained in bottle 1 might be constituted by a powdery material instead of a liquid.
In a general manner, While I have, in the above description, disclosed what I deem to be practical and efficient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the parts without departing from the principle of the present invention as comprehented within the scope of the accompanying claim.
What I claim is:
An atomizer unit which comprises, in combination, a container for the liquid to be atomized, said container having a cylindrical threaded neck at the top thereof, a cap having a cylindrical downward extension, said extension being threaded to engage said threaded neck, said cap including means forming a spraying nozzle, a tube carried by said cap and extending in said container, said tube opening at one end into said nozzle, the other end of said tube being at the bottom of said container, said cap being provided with an inner recess in communication with said nozzle and with a central passage for the inflow of gas into said recess, said passage opening into the bottom Wall of said cap, a packing joint mounted on said bottom wall and surrounding the end of said passage, a reservoir adapted to contain gas under pressure located inside said container, said reservoir being provided at the top end thereof with a cylindrical threaded neck, a downward cylindrical threaded extension integral with said cap, coaxially located inside said first mentioned extension and adapted to cooperate with said last mentioned threaded neck for removably securing said reservoir to said cap with the edge of said last mentioned neck tightly applied against said packing joint around said end of said passage, said cap being provided, in the portion thereof located between said two extensions thereof,
with a hole placing the inside of said container in com- 2 munication with the atmosphere, a puncturable seal carried in said reservoir to close said opening, means carried by said cap and operable from the outside thereof for puncturing said seal after said reservoir has been secured to said cap, whereby once said seal has been punctured, gas under pressure can flow from said reservoir into said recess, valve means in said passage, resilient means carried by said passage for urging said valve means toward closing position, and means carried by said cap and operable from the outside thereof for opening said valve means.
