- Another object of the present invention is to provide a circular window of the above type in which the inner frame may be rotatably supported upon the outer frame, whereby the pivotal axis of rotation of the semi-circular closure elements may be adjusted with respect to a horizontal plane, whereby the path of air flowing through the window can be adjusted to prevent drafts and to facilitate the movement of air in a predetermined direction.

Application February '7, 195a, Serial No. 7133 88 3 Claims. (Cl. 2tP--dti) This invention relates to building structures and more particularly to a window therefor.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a circular window for various types of building structures which will provide an attractive appearance and maximum ventilation during use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a circular window of the above type in which the inner frame may be rotatably supported upon the outer frame, whereby the pivotal axis of rotation of the semi-circular closure elements may be adjusted with respect to a horizontal plane, whereby the path of air flowing through the window can be adjusted to prevent drafts and to facilitate the movement of air in a predetermined direction.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a window bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation view of a circular window made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a front plan view of a window segment forming a part of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a front plan view of a screen segment forming another part of the present invention;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse cross sectional view taken along line 44 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse cross sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 3;
Figure 6 is an enlarged transverse cross sectional view taken along line 6-6 of Figure l; and
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary front elevational view of certain parts of the window frame segment construction.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a circular window 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include an outer channel shaped frame 12 within which a plurality of roller bearings 13 may be supported. An inner frame 14 of substantially T-shaped cross section is rotatably supported upon the bearing elements 13 for selective rotational movement relative thereto. Flat circular seals 15 are secured at opposite sides of the inner end outer frame in overlapping engagement with the space between these frame elements, so as to provide a complete air and moisture seal which prevents the entry of foreign matter and enhances the appearance of the window. These seals 15 are secured in place, such as by screws 11, whereby the entire unit is maintained in proper assembly. If desired, the bearings 13 may be eliminated and the inner frame permanently secured in a fixed position relative to the outer frame, should this adjustable feature not be required.
A pair of substantially semi-circular closure elements are rotatably supported within the inner frame 14. These closure elements include a semi-circular frame 16 of U- shaped cross section and a straight U-shaped frame section 18 that extends between the opposite ends of the semicircular frames 16. Corner brackets 20 are provided to secure the arcuate and straight frame sections together. These corner brackets have an arcuate pin 21 for insertion into the end of the arcuate frame section 16 and a straight pin portion 22 for insertion into the straight frame section 18. Each bracket is also provided with an outwardly extending trunnion 23 that is rotatably secured within the inner frame 14, such as by screws 25. It will thus be recognized that these semi-circular closure elements, which may have either a pane of glass 28 or screen 27 are rotatably supported within the window for movement between an open and closed position. A clamp type latch 26 is carried by each of such closure elements for selectively securing these elements in a closed position with respect to the inner and outer frames.
In actual use, either one or both sides of the window may be opened at any one time. Since the inner frames may be rotatably supported upon the outer frames, the entire inner frame can also be selectively rotated in the plane of the outer frame, whereby the pivotal axes of both closure elements may be adjusted with respect to a plane extending transversely of the Window. This adjustment makes it possible to control the path of flow of air through the window, such as from the ceiling, floor, or side walls of a particular room.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A circular window assembly comprising, in combination, a circular outer frame, a circular inner frame carried by said outer frame, a pair of semi-circular window members pivotally supported upon said inner frame for selective rotation between an open and a closed position, latch means carried by each one of said window members releasably securing said window members in closing engagement with said inner frame, each one of said window members comprising a semi-circular arcuate portion, a straight portion extending between the ends of each said arcuate portion, brackets securing the ends of said straight and arcuate portions of each one of said window members together, each said bracket comprising an arcuate section and a straight section, and an outwardly extending trunnion adjacent to the meeting point of said arcuate and straight sections.
2. The combination according to claim 1, further comprising bearing means acting between said inner and outer frames for rotatably supporting said inner frame for adjustment relative to said outer frame.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said bearing means comprises roller bearings extending transversely of said outer frame, and flat circular seal elements overlying each of the opposite sides of said inner and outer frames for masking the space therebetween.
