4 Claims. (Cl. 160--92) This invention relates to windows and more particularly to a window of circular configuration.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a circular window that may be rotatably mounted within a window opening, in which the window includes a pair of semi-circular glass panes that may be opened to any desired position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a window of the above type in which each semi-circular pane has means for releasably maintaining the panes in an adjusted open position independently of the rotation of the window frame about a central axis.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a circular window having a pair of semi-circular inside windows and means adjacent to the outside thereof for removably supporting interchangeable storm windows and screens for the various seasons of the year.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a circular Window bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a window made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken along line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional View taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a front elevational view of an interchangeable screen element forming a part of the present invention;
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6, showing an interchangeable storm window element also forming a part of the present invention; and
Figure 8 is a View similar to Figure 3, showing the device with the inside and storm windows in place.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a circular window made in accordance with the present invention is shown in Figures 1 to 4 to be secured within the circular opening 12 of a rigid wall 10. A circular rim 12 forming a part of the window construction is secured within the circular opening and is provided with a series of circumferentially spaced pairs of parallel fingers 15, each of which is provided with a convex portion 17 that is adapted to be seated within mating indentations 18 at the opposite ends of a roller 20. This arrangement forms a rotatable bearing construction for floating or rotatably supporting an inner frame 22 for rotation about the central axis common to the center of the circular opening 12.
As is more clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4, the inner frame 22 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel flanges 2 23 and a centralweb portion 25. The flanges 23 substantially enclose the rollers 20 so as to provide a neat and finished appearance and eliminating any drafts. A center column 26 extends along a diameter of the frame 22 to divide the window into substantially two semicircular halves.
Each half of the inner frame 22 is provided with a pair of ratchet type brackets 29 in the vicinity of the center column 26. These brackets 29 each receive a trunnion member 31 of the semi-circular inside window frame 32. A latch 34 carried by each window frame 32 cooperates with a mating latch plate 33 so as to provide means for securing the window in a closed position. Of course, each frame 32 supports a correspondingly shaped glass pane 35,
The outside of the window is provided with a pair of semi-circular screens 36 that are mounted in semi-circular frames 37. These frames are arranged to be removably secured to the outside of the frame, such as by screws 38 that extend through correspondingly shaped holes 39 in the frame 37. During inclement weather, these screens 36 are replaced with storm window frames 50 which include storm window panes 51. Each storm window frame 50 is also provided with a pair of diametrically opposite pivot pins 56 that are rotatably secured within the corresponding side of the inner frame 22. A latch 53 that is circumferentially spaced from the pivot pins 56 is arranged to cooperate with an opening 54 in the center web 25 of the inner frame so as to releasably secure the storm window in the closed position.
With reference to Figures 4 and 5 of the drawing, the outermost extremity of each trunnion 31 is provided with a star wheel 41. A pointed plunger 43 supported for retractable movement within the bracket 29, is adapted to releasably engage the indents of the star wheel 41 so as to releasably secure the star wheel, trunnion, and supported inside window frame 32 in an adjusted open position. A spring 44 that acts between the plunger 43 and an adjustment screw 46 normally biases the plunger 43 into engagement with the star wheel, but in response to a suflicient rotating force, is adapted to permit the adjustment of the window frame 32 to a desired position.
With the windows in a partially open positions 32a, as shown in Figure 2, the entire inner frame 22 may be selectively rotated within the rim 13 so that the open window frames may direct the air in any desired direction. Since the screens and storm windows rotate with the inner frame 22, the window always presents an attractive and neat appearance. Furthermore, all of the parts are easily accessible so that cleaning and repairs can be readily performed.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A circular window comprising, in combination, a circular rim adapted to be secured within a circular wall opening, a circular inner frame locatably supported upon said rim for rotation about a common central axis, a pair of semi-circular windows secured to one side of said inner frame, said inner frame including a pair of spaced parallel and radially outwardly extending flanges defining a housing, a plurality of roller bearings secured in circumferentially spaced relationship around said rim in engagement with said inner frame, said inner frame housing enclosing said bearings, each of said windows comprising a pair of axially aligned trunnions extending outwardly from diametrically opposite sides, and said inner frame including a pair of brackets for rotatably receiving said trunnions to permit rotation of said windows said latch means is operative to lock said windows ina between open and closed positions. closed position independently of the rotational position 2.
