Description

Jan. 16, 1940. E. s. PERSSON HINGE Filed April 14, 1938 \NVENTOR A T T Y5" lllllll ERHZ SIGFIMD PERssoN 8v W,M7M
Patented Jan. 16, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HINGE Eric Sigfrid Persson, Malmo, Sweden Appiieation Aprii14, 1938, Serial No. 202,117
In Sweden August 30, 1937 3 Claims.
In windows of the kind mounted to pivot on a horizontal axis approximately at the middle of the distance between the upper and lower edges of the window, it is desirable that said axis passes through the common centre of gravity of the movable window parts. Hereby the work required in turning the Window is decreased and there is no risk of emergencies caused by inadvertent and violent opening or closing of the window.
0n the other hand, in certain types of such windows, it is desired that, upon turning the movable window parts through an angle of approximately 180 counted from the closed position of the window, said movable parts are positioned inside the opening of the frame.
One embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the drawing, in which Fig. 1 shows, on a decreased scale, a diagramniatical illustration of the way of operation of the window,
Figs. 2 and 3 show an embodiment of the invention, in which a band brake is provided.
In the embodiment shown, window-sashes I are positioned in window-frames 2 in the manner suggested in Fig. 1, i. e. so as to be rotated on a horizontal axis at about the middle of the height of the window. In Fig. l the left side is the outside, the right side being the inside. The windows are made to pivot on hinges, one embodiment of which is shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Corresponding parts of the embodiment are pro vided with like reference letters.
The unit I fastened to the. frame 2 is bent in window-sash I, viz. an upper, or top, flange and a lower, or bottom, flange iii, the last mentioned' one provided on its upper edge with a number of teeth 62. I i
To the window-sash i a pin is connected, which comprises a thinner portion Maud another portion having a shape that is not round. On the portion 65 a member is mounted comprising a round Wheel 10 and a toothed ring 66 fixedly connected 'to said wheel H! and arranged to cooperate with the teeth 62.
The wheel 79 is enclosed by a brake band 61, the ends of which are kept together bya screw 68. The brake band Blis carried by a pin 69 attached to the unit I and the flange 69, and" the brake is made to swing about said pin .69.
In closed position of the window, the pin 64, 65 occupies the position shown in Fig. 2. When opening the window, the pin 64, 65 is being rotated in a clockwise direction (Fig. 2), and at such a. Way as to, form two flanges facing the the same time it is caused to roll on the toothed path 62 towards the right in Fig. 2. During this movement the brake band 61 swings on the pin 69. The rotation of the pin and the member tit, '50 mounted thereon is counteracted by the brake band 61 more or less in dependence of the degree of tightening of screw 68. y
In the embodiment shown the mobility of the window-sash in relation to the frame in the direction, of the axis of rotation is effected by the fact that the pin 64, 55 is displaceable in the member 66, I0, as shown in Fig. 3.
Modifications of the embodiment. described above are feasible within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a window having a frame and a sash, a curved tooth-rack fixedly attached to said frame at one side thereof, a wheel non-rotatably attached to said sash at one side thereof at about the middle of the height of the sash, teeth around the periphery of said wheel occupying part of the width thereof in a position to mesh with said tooth-rack, a brake band encircling said wheel, said brake band being swingably connected to the frame, and adjusting means on said brake band for adjusting the braking effect thereof.
2. In a window having a frame and a sash, a curved tooth-rack fixedly attached to said frame at one side thereof, a wheel non-rotatably attached to said sash at one side thereof at about the middle of the height of the sash, teeth around the periphery of said wheel occupying part of the width thereof in a position to mesh with said tooth-rack, a brake band encircling said wheel, said brake band being swingably connected to the frame, and a screw connecting the ends of each brake band for adjusting the braking effect thereof by tightening and untightening said screw.
3. In a window having a frame and a sash, a curved tooth-rack fixedly attached to said frame at one side thereof, a non-round shaft connected to said sash at one side thereof at about the middle of the height of the sash, a wheel axially slidably mounted on said shaft so as to be displaceable longitudinally thereof but rotatably fixed thereto, teeth around the periphery of said wheel occupying part of the width thereof in a position to mesh with said tooth-rack, a brake band encircling said wheel, said brake band being swingably connected to the frame, and adjusting means provided at said brake band for adjusting the braking effect thereof.
