y 1959 E. 5. SMITH ELECTRICAL INSULATING GLOVE Filed June 5. 1957 INVENTOR. Emansou S. Smi'm k/Zma 2%?94 ATTORNEYS 2,886,824 Patented May 19, 1959 ELECTRICAL INSULATJN G GLGVE Emerson S. Smith, Ravenna, Ohio Application June 5, 1957, Serial No. 663,761
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-168) This invention relates to rubber gloves, and particularly to those which are used by linesmen for electrical insulating purposes.
Gloves of the character set forth are used in all conditions of weather and are used either with or without an inner glove as desired. Heretofore, such gloves have embodied a hand portion and a gauntlet portion, wherein the gauntlet embodied substantially a straight line continuation of the hand portion. Such construction, however, has not been entirely satisfactory particularly in zones of low temperature, because the gauntlet has not provided suflicient space for the sleeves of the clothing and, as a result, the gloves would not remain in the desired position upon the hands of the wearer. Additionally, the straight line formation would not provide a snug-fitting glove around the wrist of the wearer. This tended to increase the difficulty of holding tools which the linesmen are accustomed to use.
An object of the present invention is to provide a rubber glove which will overcome the foregoing objections and which can be made as readily as the gloves heretofore used for the same purpose.
Referring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front view, partially in section, of a glove embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the glove shown in Fig. 1, with a part thereof broken away.
The glove embodying the present invention has a hand portion a wrist portion 11; and a gauntlet portion 12. A part of the glove is broken away as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to illustrate the fact that the glove is made of rubber or rubber-like material, having a uniform thickness. The glove is made in the usual way by a dipping process, wherein a mandrel is dipped into the liquid material of which the glove is to be made, and, after repeated clippings to the desired thickness, the glove is peeled oii the mandrel.
The present invention is concerned with the manner in which the gauntlet portion is formed and is joined to the hand portion of the glove. This is accomplished by extending the sides of the hand portions inwardly to form a wrist portion, after which the sides are extended outwardly in a reverse curve, as at 14, which merges with inclined portions 15, that extend in a straight line to the gauntlet end of the glove. The necked-in portion 11 provides a snug-fitting engagement with the wrist of the wearer, whereas the reversely bent portion provides adequate space for the cuffs of the garment worn by the operator.
An advantage of the present invention is the fact that the hand portions and wrist portions fit snugly about the operator, thus enabling him to use tools with facility, whereas the gauntlet portion has adequate space for enabling the operator to manipulate his hands without caus ing the glove to bind against the clothing.
I claim:
1. A formed electrical insulating glove of rubber or the like comprising a hand portion, a wrist portion and a gauntlet portion, the wrist portion on the front, back and sides of the glove curving relatively sharply inwardly from the base of said hand portion and then substantially immediately relatively sharply outwardly to form a constricted internal passageway of relatively short lengthwise extent adapted for receiving the wrist of a wearer therein in snug fitting relation, the outer end of said wrist portion diverging outwardly to a width greater than the base of said hand portion and to a juncture with the inner end of said gauntlet portion whereby suflicient space is provided adjacent said inner end of said gauntlet portion for a sleeve portion of a wearers clothing and Without interference of the latter with said wrist and gauntlet portions.
2. A formed electrical insulating glove of rubber or the like comprising a hand portion, a wrist portion and a gauntlet portion, said wrist portion on the front, back and sides of the glove curving relatively sharply inwardly from the base of said hand portion and then substantially immediately relatively sharply outwardly to form a constricted internal passageway of relatively short lengthwise extent adapted for receiving therein in snug fitting relation the wrist of a wearer, the outer end of said wrist portion diverging outwardly to a width greater than the base of said hand portion and to a juncture with the inner end of said gauntlet portion whereby sufiicient space is provided adjacent said inner end of said gauntlet portion for a sleeve portion of a wearers clothing and without interference of the latter with said wrist and gauntlet portions, said gauntlet portion extending in substantially a straight line from said wrist portion to the gauntlet end of said glove.
3. A formed electrical insulating glove in accordance with claim 2, wherein said gauntlet portion is of generally tubular configuration flared in a direction toward the outer end thereof.
